Default Newport Crab 2/21

Fortywinks and I along with our better halves hit Yaquina Bay for some crabs and herring. The trip started out a little iffy when one trap we tossed had a line tangled and the float went under. It would have to be the fancy $100 trap of course, not the $15 one. Good thing the the tide was ripping since we found it 3 hours later about a 1/2 mile up the bay in 20 feet of water. Anyway, we got 4 rocks and 5 to 6 keeper size dungee's. Too bad every one of the dungee's were females.

Did get 22 herring. Never done this before and thought it was pretty fun. We did the best drifting with the current in about 20 to 30 feet of water. The herring were big.

As we goofed around the bay I thought about the post regarding jets & TUNA!. So there I was motoring around at 5 to 8 mph throwing a big wake and making lots of bubbles.

The bay was very crowded and the weather was not exactly as the weather folks had lead us to believe. We did have fun tho'.

WaterDog,
We went out of Hammond both Friday and Saturday, and got 4 limits each day. There's still a lot of crab out there. When we pulled the cheap square traps just before high tide on Friday, I don't think another crab could have gotten in there. Out of the bunch there was probably 12-15 keepers in each one. The weather was great on Friday, but Saturday was a little windy and choppy. Only a couple of boats Friday crabbing, but Saturday there was 20 or 30 out there.

I forgot, I did post a report on the main board about the trip. I guess I should have posted here too.

MM, we just launch at Hammond and head downstream. We drop our pots between buoy 22 and 20 in about 30' of water. Last weekend we used both old salmon and chicken parts. One seemed to work as well as the other. I'm planning on going down next Friday. I think high tide is around 11:30, so we will start around 8 am. Don't know how much longer the crabbing will be good, but I'll keep going until it slows down. If you use the salmon, you might want to use bait boxes too, the sealions will strip your traps if you don't.
