I get this funny feeling that the cheapest, easiest way to find shrimp on the south coast is at your local fish-market.

I gave 4 shrimp pots to Pilar, 2 to Miss B Haven and I still have 4 for myself.

I suspect next summer somebody will find a shrimp somewhere

Fish steep rocky drop offs in deep water for Spot Prawns. The rubble pile on the east side of Nelson Island looked like a good place to start.

Yep - won't be able to bottom fish on the Shale pile this summer so might as well set some traps around there and see what happens! All I need is about 10,000 feet of line and somebody dumb enough to pull them up.

Hey Keta - you coming?

Pus-n-Boots
Fishermans Feast or Fantasy.
Drive up to Hoods Canal around May and it's sold on every street corner.

Mel, you can borrow my Honda puller if you want.
Or I have 6-10 pots we can toss in at once.

Perhaps you can e-mail Aunty M and she can fill you in on the Hood Cannal gig.

Tom, just bait those pots with Mel. He kinda stinks.  Whoops, there goes a tuna invite. :depressed:

Anybody know about what depth of water in the Hood? Is that 350-600 for there or do you mean off shore Oregon?

They are out there but the habitat is limited. The only way that they will be found is to soak pots on potential habatat!

I would look for suitable habitat in the 100'-500' range Any deeper and it gets real hard to pull the pots. They come shallower at night.

The spot prawn occurs in the northeast Pacific ocean from southern Alaska to southern California and also in Asian waters around the Sea of Japan. They are found on rocky bottom from intertidal to over 250 fm in depth.

Shrimping in Hood Canal is usually done in 200' to 300' of water for the highest concentrations.

Keta (as usual ) is correct about ledges and drop offs. Just make sure the weight you use is sufficient to keep the currents from pushing the pot off a ledge.

I'll always answer Hood Canal questions, but in all honesty, Keta knows more about ocean shrimp, and other than arguing a bait recipe, I'll always defer to him.

AuntyM,

I've only done it in inlets too. The habitat requirements will be the same in the open ocean though.

There are also Tanner crab off the Oregon coast but I think they are too deep for sport fishing.
