Default specie clarification?

Hope nobody gets too disgusted with what is probably a really dumb question, but here goes:

Off Oregon & Washington, are we fishing for thunnus alalunga (longfin?) or thunnus albacares (yellowfin) or are they the same?

albacore

Good. I had some friends tell me they were yellowfin. Now I can have the pleasure of correcting them. I always thought the yellowfin were down south.

But I do notice a lot of references to albacore on this board....what's up with that?

That web site is from South of the equator. Everything is upside down and bassackwards down there. Don't let Keta mess with ya either.

By the way... the real answer is neither. We are actually fishing for Swordfish and Striped Marlin. Just can't seem to keep those pesky TUNA off the baits though.

Miss B,
Not quite true. We are fishing for Bluefin also, and they are TUNA, I just wish we could keep all those pesky little 20-30 pound fish away from the spread.

Slab,
I think what you are seeing is "Local Names" for the fish.

Rod-

It just amazes me what a wealth of scientific bulltrout we have right here on this little side board of ifish!

PS, the scientific name for Corrirod is:

"smarticus alecsicuss"

You'll have to ask his wife what his "common" name is!

What Miss B was really trying to say, in scientific terms, is we are actually trying to catch the "fishkus withlongproboscus" and his brother "fishkus withlongproboscus andracingstripe".

The local tuna are known as "albismokin yourdraggus" or "albitearing rodsoffboatus".

The other species in which Keta has mentioned is known as "Tuna freighttrainus" or "pescado tornado". The Indians call them "BigumFrigum BlueFish" but I'm not sure what that translates to.

Let me know if you have any further scientific questions you'd like answered.
