Default Two fishing poles

I have heard rumors that they were considering allowing two fishing poles per person if you buy some extra license for it. I like this idea...I might even consider the price of a full extra license for that. It makes it much easier to play with choice of baits that way. Doesn't mean they have to increase the catch limit and two poles works just fine in other states.

With the pressure on some of the rivers I think 2 poles would be a grave mistake. Can you imagine the Salmon River with all thoes folks having 2 rods? And I think it would have a bad effect on mortality rates. I understand your point and I almost like the idea but with the problems of Snagging and folks not handling fish right I'd have to say no.

All depends what kinda fish you wanna use two poles for. Lets say you fishing for salmon all by yourself, and you get a double, spooling you.
On some days when it is really slow I wish for more than one pole, but some days even one fishing pole is plenty.
I had days, fishing for sturgeon, when 3 of us, limited with one fishing pole in 2 hours.

As much fun as it sounds I can think of more reasons why not than why.

Fishing more than one rod sounds fine to me. I have fished in Florida where you are allowed multiple rods and there has never been a problem. Oregon won't allow you to fish with live bait either, what about worms? Won't allow you to fish at night. Pretty soon this State just won't allow you to fish at all.

I started a thread on this issue over a year ago. I, in certain scenarios would be in favor of it. Yes, it can certainly be amusing if multiple hookups occur. I proposed that for another $10, one could have an additional rod. Funds would be split between ODFW and OSP for enforcement. I even spoke to an OSP game enforcement officer about it. He was against it, from an enforcement standpoint. Said how would you know if someone has the endorsement? I dont see it that way. A special colored stamp on your license, plainly visible from several feet away is all that is needed. Hold it up and show them when asked. AS far as in crowded areas (spingers @ Meldrum for instance), some form of restrictions would be necessary. That is where I see a problem. I hate the idea of more beaurocracy-laws. But, when two guys are sitting out in their boat, and could easily be fishing additional rods, I just dont see the harm. Obviously, areas where endangered fish are present, an exclusion would be expected.

There is a change this year.

Offshore Pelagic
Methods as described below are only allowed when fishing outside of three miles from shore for offshore pelagic species. Only offshore pelagic species may be in possession, and any other species caught must be immediately released while using these methods.

• No restrictions on the number of rods or lines fished per angler.

In Canada you can use two rods if there is only one person in the boat. It's a headache I have tried it. Except: Hang a fly rod out behind the boat while fishing with Trolling gear. If you get a fish on the trolling gear it won't hang up with a floating line, unless of course the fish crosses behind the boat. But you don't really need to hang your fly line out very far. They call it bucktailing when you fish in the prop wash.

Have fished two rods in California for Kokanee. Wish I could fish two in Oregon.

Pelagic: Of open oceans or seas.

I remember the days in Washington when we could fish 2 rods. I was just a kid, but my dad loved it when he could hang a shallow herring at 20 pulls and mooch the other rod. He had several doubles with big kings, plus it was always a "firedrill" I would definately support an extra rod license!

As of Jan. 1, 2004, you can use 2 rods for Steelies in Idaho (with the 2 - pole permit) I hear they will allow 2 for Salmon as well. I have yet to use 2 for any anadromous fish here. I do use 2 when trolling for trout, to experiment on lure color and depth. I have been known to do the same for Sturgoen, with different baits. The limiting factor is, my sled will troll about 5 rods comfortably. Any more than that, and you'll be braiding your own gill nets.

I have yet to see a guy drift fishing 2 rods. I would love to see someone try...

I ice fished for panfish for years in the midwest with two lines. The limit was fifteen fish per day on one line or two. If the bite was hot you couldn't possibly fish with more than one line. You just pulled up the other and let it sit on the ice

I used two poles, at night, in colorado at 11 mile resevoir. Temp was warm, no wind, probably about 200 people (at least by the amount of lights). What a blast. I couldn't even keep them both in the water at the same time. What a memory. We caught and released an insane number of fish. I don't know if I would support 2 poles for salmon, steelhead, or sturgeon. but what a blast it would be.

When I take my little grandaughter and her friends anchor fishing for salmon or steelies in the Columbia it pretty much comes down to a controlled fire drill. When we get bit it's really a hoot. Grab the pole that goes off, set the hook, then either hand it off or put it back in the holder with a loose drag, then get the other lines up, drag bags pulled in and let the anchor go...While keeping an eye on the little ones so they don't do something to make things even more interesting, if you know what I mean. Then you take turns letting the little ones bring in a trophy. It's a blast, the multiple poles make more of a challenge and can also be a help to see what the fish will bite.
For some fisheries I don't see a problem and the extra revenue can't hurt.

I used to use two rods when trolling for salmon in Michigan. It was a big help to be able to play with color and bait combinations and increased my odds as a single person in the boat. Heck with the limits set by the state does it really matter if you used one or a hundred...a limit is a limit.

I have purchased the 2nd-pole permit in Idaho since they first became available. I think that it is a great option for those interested in having that added flexibility in their approach. If fishing conditions don't warrant a 2nd pole, or it is more then you can handle, you obviously aren't required to set out that 2nd line. I also believe that this is a worthwhile additional income for the state program budget.

I don't buy the negative remarks offered by some, but then again you're entitled to your opinions as I am with my own. The bag limits control the take, and those who can't count past "1" or handle more than one rod have the option to not pay for this previledge. To each his own....

I think it would be fun but even if the limit on salmon and steelhead stayed the same many more fish would be harvested each year,Your simply increasing your chances by two.I have fished multiple rods in texas, what fun.Could you imagine three guys in a drift boat with six rods pulling plugs, curtin of certin death!!!If you were by yourself anchored for springers it could be sensory overload knowing you have two rods that could pound down at anytime  .

I think in this era of declining fishing license and tag sales,a second rod license is a no brainer. More money for ODFW with no increase in fisherman, kind of a win win situation.
