Finally figured it out!
During the deep snows around here in December, the elk moved down into the valleys and some were very persistant in some areas. One spot was at Natal, right between two houses in a small area. I thought maybe the residents were feeding them. The the other day I ran into a lineman for the local co-op and he mentioned a herd on the Scappoose road that had done the same thing. He said every time they came through the area at night the elk were bedded down right next to the road and during the day they stayed in the yard next to the vacant house. He then stated, "they ate that ivy right down to the roots." Ivy???
Well, I got to looking at the spot at Natal, the trees are covered with ivy, but when I looked closer, there is none on the trunks for about 8 feet up from the ground! Has anybody heard of elk eating ivy? Maybe it was just an available starvation diet?
