Default Silvies Unit Hunting

Im putting in for a new hunt this year in the Silvies unit and was planning on camping near Yellow Jacket lake. Im putting in for first season bull and wondering if anyone had any tips on areas around there that are good, migration paths, guzzlers, etc. etc. Any info is greatly appreciated. Im planning a scouting trip in April and wanted to gather some data before i head over.

My Uncle got this bull there last year out in the burn area. I am looking to hunt up on the north east side in the woods.

It looks like you should be giving out info not requesting it! What areas did you see elk it? Migration paths, waterin' holes, where'd they go once the pressure started?

Well im going to give it a try. My uncle and his party pulled two out of there last year, the second one very similar to that one i posted. They had not hunted there before and got both animals out in the burn area.

That would be a good place to start..Finding a good place to hunt elk in that unit is like finding gold once you find that gold mine you keep it QUIET...IMOP scout out that area Stay off the roads and hunt it hard...

Great, so your saying your uncle and his buddy killed the only two bulls in that unit????? Great, now what am I going to do.
I have never seen a guzzler in there and not many elk but some. This is just my experience, and we have a few acres there. For deer this was the worst year my family has ever seen there. we did ok on Elk, I guess we did so good cause we had the biggest hunting party we have ever had so who knows. I wish they would cut down on tags and maybe even close some units for a year or so. Just wish the numbers where higher.

There are elk every where. What I would tell you is to stick to the wooded ridges and the deep canyons. Last season we hunted the west side of the unit and were into animals, but we did not take any thing out. I was only able to hunt 3 days.

A buddy of my brother was in a camp where they filled 8 out of 10 tags during the second season. Again, hunt the wooded ridges and drop into the deep canyons.

It seemed that every 20 steps there was a fairly fresh pile of elk doo and traks every where. It was so nice that I hunted one day is shorts, and this was second season.

Good luck!

Andrew
