Julie Rose Headin\' To SF
Well....as crazy as it sounds, we're hopin' for a weather window around the 6th of March to head the Julie Rose south to SF.
Planning on leavin her down there for a few weeks, and returning around the first of May. Having some thoughts about fishin on the way back up, maybe trying our luck for halibut in S. OR on the opener
Any suggestions from our southern friends?

Re: Julie Rose Headin\' To SF
Yeah, come by and pick me up!!! I'll show you all the halibut holes. The best spot North of the Oregon border is off of Port Orford NW about 19-20 miles. Directly west of Cape Arago there's a high spot that's easily found on nav charts and comes up to 400'. The best fishing is on the south side of the high spot usually in 4-500' of water. Plenty of fish and an occassional big fish.

Re: Julie Rose Headin\' To SF
Bruce,
I made that trip in February a few years ago and can give you one very good piece of advise. Do your trip by day light and bar hop down. Here's why I say this;
1. There are millions (at least thousands  ) of crab pots that time of year which would force you outside to avoid at night.
2. Even if you get a window of good weather, the prevailing swell and seas are going to give you some rough time. You will be really tired doing it around the clock.
3. It only took me four days to get there by bar hopping and we had a great time and got plenty of rest. And we enjoyed our evenings in port.
Day one to Coos Bay. Day two Cresent City. Day three Ft. Bragg. Day four SF.
Wish I could go with you but duty calls.

Mike, were you "bar" hopping or "bar"(jetty) hopping?
Just needed some clarification.

Re: Julie Rose Headin\' To SF
Popeye-
Salmon season opens down there on Feb 14 for Horse Mountain to Point Arena (Fort Bragg Area) and April 3 for Pigeon Point South (Monterey Bay and Santa Cruz) and April 14 for the everything else. Chinook only, 24" minimum.
We have a HUGE party down in Moss Landing every year for the salmon opener, Thursday Night thru Sunday. You are cordially invited. I would definitely stop a couple times for bottom fishing along the lost coast, there are some great spots between Eureka and Fort Bragg that see almost 0 fishing pressure.
Enjoy!

Re: Julie Rose Headin\' To SF
Suggestion #1 - get your California fishing license before you leave, or as soon as you hit Crescent City or Eureka. You'll want to be able to fish when you hit Cape Mendocino & south.
If ya want I can share one of my log books with you that has numbers for a whole bunch of (rockfish) spots between Shelter Cove and Pt Arena. Of course they're loran numbers...you have one of those right?
The one spot you really, really ought to check out is a halibut spot off of Punta Gorda, about 1.75 miles straight off the point. It'll be right on your course (40 - 50 f) so you don't have to go out of your way.

Re: Julie Rose Headin\' To SF
I don't think pacific halibut is open down there until May 1, so you can fish Punta Gorda reef on the way back.
I imagine you will be trying to make the most of good weather just getting down there as fast as you can. Good luck! Wish I was going, should be great adventure.

Re: Julie Rose Headin\' To SF
Popeye. Im envious. As you cruse along think of me now and again.. This morning I had to put my truck in 4wheel drive to get out of my driveway. There are still drifts in my yard two feet deep. No liquid water for miles and miles , except under the ice. The ground hog says 5 more weeks till spring ... Im going nuts. id. p.

Re: Julie Rose Headin\' To SF
i.d.,
Get a space heater and put it in your boat. After work each day go sit in the boat and pretend your on the high seas. You can pretend those drifts are ocean swells! Just tell your wife your "working" on the boat, as she'll think you've lost your mind if she sees you pretending to drive the boat.
Don't worry though, we'll all understand what you're going thru!
