Columbia River Terrafin Enhanced Region
I recently sent off a message to Terrafin regarding interest in an enhanced region off the Columbia River. I did hear back from them. The question I received was what area would be of interest. Last year we fished a bunch at 124.40W by 46.10N - right on the south edge of the canyon. I was thinking of giving them those coordinates for the center of the enhanced region, and then going about 10 miles each way from that. Other thoughts? I was hoping to get back to them with a list of users (and potential users) along with coordinates so that we might have something going by next July.

Re: Columbia River Terrafin Enhanced Region
I'd be interested as well as in the area around 61 spot.
I would also like to be able to download it to my PDA so I could take the data with me. Yea, I know they don't float.
It would be awsome to be able to use the stylus to get grid coordinates for the seams like you can do with a mouse on the computer.
A group use fee or special would be very welcome too.
There are my two jigs worth....

Re: Columbia River Terrafin Enhanced Region
I don't currently subscribe to the service, so I don't know the size of the areas they provide for enhanced views.
I think it should be an area equal to a reasonable distance from the mouth that a sport vessel can travel. 40 or 50 miles out from the mouth should cover most sport fishers, charters and commercials would probably want more.

Re: Columbia River Terrafin Enhanced Region
Enhanced hydrothermal imaging would be awesome--especially if it would include slightly more frequent updates.
I agree with Mr. Fisherman about "Area 61"
I am amazed and awed by technology these days.
I've been fooling around off the Oregon Coast for 33 years now, and have been witness to an amazing technological evolution. It is no longer necessary to fly by intuition and the seat of your pants when fishing offshore.
This newfangled enhanced device called the internet has done it's share to make offshore fishing safer too !!
I would wager that Ifish has saved a life or three in the course of its existence due to the excellent exchange of information and dialogue that exists here!!
For an aging redneck, I must admit, this technology crud is kinda cool!!

Re: Columbia River Terrafin Enhanced Region
Frequency is pretty much controlled by when the satellite passes over and what the cloud cover looks like. Enhanced resolution in the are you describe could be useful if the clouds cooperate. My only other comment would be that it would be nice to have the colors overlayed on a decent depth contour. I upload the data into my navigation software, but can't view the temp and depth contour simultaneously. Also would be nice if color coding of temperature was fixed rather than changing based on acual ocean temps. My terrafin ID is also pkg40.

Re: Columbia River Terrafin Enhanced Region
Thanks for the reminder - I haven't head back from Terrafin lately on the CR request. If you don't mind my asking - where is "Area 61"?

Re: Columbia River Terrafin Enhanced Region
Hi Dean, this area nicknamed "61 spot" is the general area about 35 miles WNW of Depoe Bay.
I had sent Jeff at Terrafin my input regarding the areas we fish most from Newport & Depoe Bay, Basically from the north end of Heceta Banks to about 45.10. Here is the response I got back:
---------------------
Thanks for taking the time to send in your feedback on our Oregon coverage.
(Rich warned me we might get a lot of input, he said you guys are bored waiting
for the season! ) I appreciate your well thought out suggestion, based on that
and some other requests we are doing a new region that will cover almost exactly
the area you describe. I expect to have this and a couple of other Northwest
regions done and ready to go in the next week or so, then we'll wait for a
little clearing (so we have something to process) and we'll get the new regions
up on the site.
I'll send you an email once we release it, and again, thank you!
Best Regards,
Jeff Gammon

Re: Columbia River Terrafin Enhanced Region
I just checked the Terafin web site. The Columbia River enhanced region is now listed as well. The pics say "Coming soon", so I suspect there is a bit of work remaining.
The coordinates for the enanced region are as follows:
45°30 - 46°40 and 123°40 - 125°00
This is roughly from Tillamook OR in the south, to the tip of Leadbetter point in the north.
From the current east most point (about 10 miles inland) to about 35 miles offshore
This is probably what I originally asked for (and got). I was thinking of requesting the area to be made smaller and therefore I beleve greater resolution (I could be wrong). I was going to propose
45°50 - 46°30 and 124°10 - 125°20
This is roughly from Arch Cape in the south to midway up Long Beach in the North,
and about the CR bouy in the east to around 50 miles offshore.
Any thoughts? I hate to ask again since they did such a good job responding. Any other CR enthusiasts have some input?
Sounds as though "Area 61" is quite a bit south of where we run, and that your request has been considered.
Dean

Re: Columbia River Terrafin Enhanced Region
Dean
That trac to the shalepile was the end of the season right?
It looks like I really pulled you guys off your
normal Tuna holes. Sorry about that.
As I remember we had a hookup out there "last Tuna of the season" and I called you and Troy out. I was following that catcher proccessor all day.
I remember that trip in to the pile, Dolpins and tons of birds, best Tuna signs I have ever witnessed but the Tuna were no where to be found.
The best part of the Day was the flat ocean and watching you guys catch the bottoms.

Re: Columbia River Terrafin Enhanced Region
Tom,
No problem about the last trip - you are right - the track shown is way off our normal route. But we had a great trip - flat calm, lot's of sunfish, dolphin, etc. We loaded up on bottom fish at the shale pile. It was a great trip. Any thoughts on the coordinates I'm proposing? You in Seattle this weekend or down in our area?
Dean

Re: Columbia River Terrafin Enhanced Region
I'm back from Pdx this pm and home in Seattle.
Topped off the tanks, checked the heat, hosed off the jet exhaust etc.
Getting ready to bring the boat down May.
We need to plan a Halibit trip or 2 or shalepile b/4 thry shut us off June 1. I'd be happy to drive
if you and Troy want to relax.
The Terrafin thing should be great, can't check the numbers, all my charts are on the boat.

KeyWest, the proposed Terrafin area that you show looks really good to me. It would help round out our CR information as the warm waters start working north.

Re: Columbia River Terrafin Enhanced Region
Hey- watcha doing giving away all our spots there Dean!
Sheesh.. the whole west coast charter and commercial fleet will be there next year. We probably won't even need to take a boat, we can can just walk from gunnel to gunnel (just like Bouy 10).
I'm pretty sure you were sworn to secrecy, esp on the Shale Pile. Too bad nobody can fish it this summer anway. :depressed:
Whats' that spot marked HAL1?? Some kinda space odessey computer dump site?
Well... at least you didn't post the "Bill" spot, or the "Blufn" hump.

Re: Columbia River Terrafin Enhanced Region
Miss B,
The area around the shale pile has an official name. I was going through some of my old books and found it. In 1916 the west coast halibut fleet pounded that area. They called it the "Lightship Grounds". From the looks of it it goes from the outside hump I was excited about toward shore about 12 miles and from the south side of the Astoria Canyon to 46 degrees N, 12x8 miles.
In 1916 there was over 3 million pounds of halibut taken from there in the month of May. From what my book says as of 1966 it hadn't yet recovered from the commercial pounding.

Ask and ye shall recieve.
The new enhanced Columbia river picture is at Terrafin today as of
March 2 2004.
West to 125.00 and North to 46.40 and South to
45.30, this should be OK.
Just add 10degrees to the scale and

Re: Columbia River Terrafin Enhanced Region
Thanks for the info Tom - the picture looks great! I agree - with the resolution it looks like we wouldn't gain much with a tighter look.
Mel - if anyone can pull the coordinates off that chart - they have a pretty precise eye. The waypoints shown alone are nearly a mile wide!!!
Hal1 is "Halibut 1" - saw a guy pull in about a 50#er there last year - so I thought I would snag the spot as I ran by.
