Sealion carnage
And they say Man is at the top of the food chain.
You would not believe the amount of seals feeding on Salmon on the river yesterday from Warrenton to PDX. If seals are an indicator fish at the mouth of the Cowlitz, must have seen 50 seals feasting there at once.
Overall, I guess 10 seals per mile would be a conservative estimate.

Re: Sealion carnage
were the feeding on salmon or the smelt? This time of year I think they're gorging on smelt.

not a bad sign seeing as we're barely past the first week of February.

Re: Sealion carnage
I had this one on for a bit Saturday. I was reeling in the decent shaker when all the sudden it went nuts and came to the surface. This is what we saw.
He took the sturgeon on my line about 20 ft behind the boat then ran about 20 yrds with it before I was able to brake it off.

Tom, it only cost $7,000 per copy to hunt those buggers in the Columbia. At least that's what they issued a ticket to the dude last year for. You should arm Minaki with torpedos fore and aft. What a display that would be.

Re: Sealion carnage
Bernie, I can only imagine what fun the gillnetters are going to have with them.
By the five or so shakers, I meant the sealions on the surface, shaking salmon, eating the guts are finding another fish to waste.
50 caliber would do it, maybe we can get the
Indians going on the sealions, or start a killer whale pod on the Columbia.
Mel, only sharpened one log all day, 8 hours, 140gl fuel 1800rpm max after the strike.
Watch out, I'm getting my props tuned now and you know what that means.

F.Y.I.
Sealions usually do not eat smelt they just follow them in for the Salmon.

Re: Sealion carnage
Not that I'm a tree hugging, dirt foot or anything, but I would rather compete with a natural predator of salmon/sturgeon than...well... um.... lets say.... gillnetters.
There, I said it!! Whew, glad I got that off my mind. Hopefully I'm not stirring the pot here, and I probably don't understand the whole situation. But than's my .02 worth.

Re: Sealion carnage
I read another article on the sea lion, and it said that his directional compass was off because of a 22 bullet lodged in his head. Looks like somebody lost a salmon to him. I remember the first time a sea lion ripped a chinook off my hook. It's a good thing I didn't have a gun. $7,000 is a little expensive!!!!!

Re: Sealion carnage
It would probably take four skin divers to give a sealion a vasectomy.
