Default Re-sewing bow straps?

The boat launch & retieve thread got me thinking. I have got a small nick in the first 6" of my bow strap closest to the hook that is very slowly growing. Sooner or later, it will tear, most likely at a time when getting out of the water quickly was necessary. My question is, can the upholstery shops sew that heavy strap material after the bad piece has been cut off?

Listen if you are in Boring Oregon you are right next to JERRY'S UPHOLSTERY. He did the top on my boat and sowed my strap for free. It would take him minutes to fix it. Call him at (503) 668-7132 im sure it would cost you next to nothing.

Cut off the cut or worn portions of your winch strap,
then re-attach hook with factory overlap, double up 50# power pro and copy factory stitch pattern.

Why not just buy a new strap?

They only run about $15.

My buddy nearly cut mine in half by getting it caught in the gear one evening when pulling it back on the trailer during the fall salmon run. Not wanting to wait, I repaired it overnight using the 50# power pro method mentioned above. The next day I ordered the new strap for $15 (that I recieved a week later) and it is still sitting behind the seat in my pick up. That was about 3 years ago. They have since started stocking them locally so it is definately easier to buy them than repair or wait for a week.

The strap is nearly 20' but only about the first foot is in need of repair. Took it to Jerry's in Boring, he fixed it in about 1 minute and would'nt take a dime

When mine breaks I just tie a new knot on the hook?

Exactly...

Run the strap thru the hook... tie a knot.. tie a knot in the tag end.
Hang it on the boat and give a winch till it slips the knot in the tag end up tight... done and done..

and yes, I do own a KLR..

The straps don't last forever. I'd rather buy a new one and not worry about it breaking at an inopportune time. The standard size is 11.99 at Boater's World. BTW, they are generally very easy to replace without any tools.

As soon as the straps break or tear, it is time to replace. For the cheap cost of a new strap, doesn't make sence to keep an old strap working.
