Default Salty Dogs Quiz #1

Welcome to the Salty Dogs College of Nautical Knowledge. Today's pop quiz:

What / where is this?

Locally known name = partial credit
Local + actual name (on chart) = full credit
Identify what the two arrows are pointing to gets extra credit

Note: Mike Stowe and Popeye are excluded from this (sorry guys!!)

How about a clue? What’s the depth of the plateau?

Just a guess, is it a bit north and a few miles west of the Chicken Ranch?

OK Pitch, put out your hands 'cause I just threw you a piece of candy.

How about the "full credit" questions?

Keta.... the very top is 67 fathoms deep. The "cliff" side drops straight down to about 110 fathoms.

Hey thanks! I've always thought that would be a killer halibut hill and I imagine a too tuna spot. Ever tried it for halibut?

Don't know the names of the other stuff, but would like to know what's going on at those spots.

I assume you are using Nobeltec's 3d software. I have the same, but my resolution is not as good. What version are you using and/or what chart will give you that kind of ocean floor detail?

Here's the full picture:

- Official name is "Daisy Bank"
- Arrows point to fault lines (huge cracks in the ocean floor)

This shot is not from any chart software; I found this while web surfing.

Has anybody fished it for tuna? Would be interesting to know how much the swell jacks up on the high spot, upwelling from currents etc.

This spot is about 9 NM due north (true) from the chicken ranch, the 100 fathom circle, with a 67 fathom high spot inside the circle.

Shezam! The ruble field to the east and the ridge to the south look like the place for BIG BUTT. The saddles between the plateau and the two pinnacles on the north look good too! The ridge to the west might be another hot spot.

Could you find a picture of the Ranch? The charts are too vague to pinpoint the hot spots.

Here's a shot of the area looking to the NW 314 degrees:

Nelson Island is on the right and a suspicious hump is on the left about 4 nm bearing 265m.

The ridge in the center that drops off into deep water looks like another spot to try.

That ridge is about 2nm due north of the ranch drift. I've marked the start of the ranch with the X.
