School sucks...
Ive been working on school since 11 am and just got done with my assignment and now I have to study....Im studying to be a nurse and am on my last three classes of anatomy and physiology and it's sucks so much!! Im just wondering what everyone does for a living and what were your hardest classes in college??? and how the heck did you get through them!!! It'll be worth it in the end but man it's tough now...on the other hand I could name all the tissue layers in a duck and that thick film that you find over the breast of a duck is called the fascia and there are three different types of them...

Dude, I didn't know you where a Male Nurse, thats cool.
As a single man, you probably have pick of the litter.
On a more serious note, I'm a Microprocessor Design Engineer with that large company in Washington County that recently announced a layoff.
I would have to say Graduate Level Engineering Class are tough, all of them, can't speak on other areas of study, in most Grad Level Engineering Text, there are no answers in the back of the book, not even the odd ones. Unless you can join a study group, it can be tough.

Re: School sucks...
Been there. For me, it was the 700 level Biochemistry that was the worst. Spent WAY too many nights studying until 3am, only to be up at 6 to get to class, just to do it again that night. I got through it with Rockstar, Smartfood, Chex Mix and for those REALLY tough nights 200 mg. of pure caffiene in pill form. Not the best on my body, but what are ya gonna do?

Re: School sucks...
Honker, I am 43 and just starting college. The way I look at it the course you are taking now is the hard one, the only easy ones are the ones you have already completed. I have been writting papers all weekend. Took time off to watch the football game and now I am studying for a test tomorrow morning.
I sure hope it is all worth it in the end.

Just keep on keepin on. I been there done that. Soon enough you'll look back on all this, and tell stories about college and much of a pain in the ass it was to get through at times. Atleast you are focused on what you want to do. That's a huge part of it. I finished a couple years ago and still dont know what I wanna do for the rest of my life. Hang in there, you'll be fine.

Re: School sucks...
I am on the downhill side of grad school. I graduated with a Biology and Chemistry degree from U of O, took 3.5 years "off" to work, and "quit" working to go back to grad school. Now, after the bar exam in May I need to find employment.
I like both. I like school. I like working. I am afraid I am at the end of my formal education for a while. But, since I view all life as learning, I will find enjoyment in my chosen career. I hope. Really. Please.
I learned a long time ago, A's are great, but B's get degrees. I was a 4.0 student in high-school and afraid of failing, but I graduated and here I am. Good luck! Enjoy it while it lasts.

Re: School sucks...
So .... I know what you are going thru. College was a few decades ago. Chemistry, Biology, Anatomy & Physiology, Organic Chemistry, Calculus ............. wow. Endless study, research, writing papers, memorization, cramming.
My diversions were chasing steelhead, ducks, big game, with limited success. We had no internet, no word processors, no cell phones. We used carbon paper - dang I'm old! I also chased a cute little blonde. It was my best hunt and I limited out. She's been my bride for over 30 years.
You have chosen an honorable profession. A hunting buddy of mine went back to school and at 33 became an ER nurse. And he loves it. Keep at it - the rewards are worth it.

My stepson is studying for his second career as an RN. His mother, my wife, did the same thing in her 40's when her MBA failled to turn heads. Male nurses are in high demand. Good pay. You made a good choice. A & P gets to everyone. Hang in there...it won't last forever. You'll be glad you did. Stay out of the hen house...when they get together its nasty.

Re: School sucks...
Hardest class to get through was Philoshpy - what a wind bag. Class attendance was a big part of the grade. Two term papers on religion and something like the color spectrum can't remember what the other was. Final was a joke - I'd talked to some seniors who took his class and if you get the final that asks why, just write because and leave - every answer is 100% grade. And I paid to take that class. It was only hard cause I had to stay awake.
Business Law, Biology, Industrial Economics, Statistics, were probably the toughest ones, well maybe my Lit class was bad to 13 books and book reports in seven weeks.
Keep at it, a career in the medical field is supposed to be hard

Re: School sucks...
In school as we speak. My hardest classes were O chemistry, physics, calculus. Hate math in any way, shape or form.
I graduated Linfield with a environmental science degree, then worked for a year. Now i am going after a masters of environmental management (game) and will likely follow that up with a Masters in Business. That way I can possibly be my own boss after learning the ropes in a consulting firm. Either way I will be able to live where i want to, set my own schedule, accept or reject work that i find interesting or dont find interesting.
School is severely cutting into my hunting time now.....but think long term. It will all be worth it when you are in a job and in the field. When you get out of school and are in a job nurses get a fair amount of time off not to mention the pay check. I know its hard to see it right now but if it makes you feel any better, i have three projects on invasive species of Oregon that i have to present in two weeks to the OISC, USFWS, and the PSU board. Just keep thinking about Post school....thats whats keepin me going since i have 3 more years of school....

Re: School sucks...
i hear ya school does suck so far my hardest class has been environmental history not so much because of the content of the class but because it is taught by the biggest left wing professor i have ever had. it seems like he never goes over anythin in our readings in class instead all he wants to do is talk bout al gore's inconvenient and how humans have destroyed the world and the world is coming to an end. its kinda funny how whenever i raise my hand after he says somethin bout "global climate change" he never seems to call me hahaha.

Re: School sucks...
I'm a doctor (chiropractor) by training, although I don't do that much any more. A&P was actually fun at the graduate level. Cutting on cadavers was WAY more interesting that dissecting cats at Portland State during my undergrad years.
Being in the medical field you really need the A&P down; it'll be your bread and butter. I graduated and started practice in 1982 and to this day I have situations where I go back to basic human anatomy and physiology when I need to think through a problem case (I've done a lot of medico-legal consulting over the past few years). You gotta get the A&P down pat, so stick with it and study hard; you'll thank yourself later.
Radiographic anatomy was probably one of the tougher classes, having to sort out all the shades of gray on an extra and picking out little pieces of bone then correlating that with dry skeletons and then carving it out in the dissection lab. Then we got to figure out different "normal variants", and identify abnormals like the person who's x-ray showed a large, rippled metallic object with a semi-radiolucent cone on one end which was situated in the lower pelvis. The history we had was something like a young adult male from the San Francisco area who presents with intense bottom area pain and moderate bleeding of sudden onset. Any body want to guess what that was?
My toughest time was second quarter in grad school. We had gross anatomy (with dissection), neuroanatomy, radiographic anatomy, neurophysiology, physiology, and a couple of other "easier" classes thrown in. We were in class about 50 hours per week, and spent about one to two hours studying outside of class for each hour in class. Needless to say not everyone made it through. Me, I was too stubborn/stupid to quit so I just grunted it out.
Nursing is a very good profession. Nurses actually end up delivering much/most of the health care and if we get socialized medicine the importance of nurses in the system is going to skyrocket (because many of the doctors will quit!). You're entering a very noble profession.

Stick with it. My sister is about to graduate from nursing school and she's done lot of all-nighters. Its nearly the only sure-bet job there is right now.
My hardest classes in college were Philosophy and Statistics. My philosophy class consisted of breaking up statements into mathematical formulas with the use of flow charts to prove the argument as falacious (sounds dirty). I suck at math, so the fact that we turned words into mathematical flow charts really put a cramp in my style. Statistics was more math, and I hated that too. The class was based on the use of statistics in sociology. All that standard deviation, sample bases, all that crap really gave me a headache. Good thing the girl next to me was so nice!

Hang in there. I KNOW what you mean. By the time I graduated I was SICK of school. Then I went to night school for 6 more years while I worked full time.
BUT now i have a great life, great wife, a fishing rod or two for every species out there and a QUIVER of camo boats!!!

Re: School sucks...
I'm a sophomore at MSU right now. My classes are starting to get kind of tough, but I switched my major to something I find very interesting and cool and it makes it so much better. I am now a construction engineering technology major (CET) and minoring in business, and really like it so far. The calculus sucks, but you just have to put some time into it and you can make it through. Whenever I'm bummed out about the work load, just tell yourself 4 years of college to make your next 60 a heck of a lot better is definitely worth it. Here's to all the college students!

Hey, now--be careful. The Oregon system doesn't have stats for sociology, but when I taught in Washington, I taught statistics for sociology. I'm sorry you didn't walk away with something meaningful. A well taught stats class actually does provide you with useful tools for understanding "facts" that people throw at you.
Oh, and for all you grumblers out there--remember this: When you finish a paper or a test, you're done. Your instructor gets to spend the next couple of days grading. Having taken many, many graduate and undergraduate classes, I would trade you workloads in a second.

this is the complete truth! These really are the best years of your life! Growing up and getting a job and having to be responsible is way over-rated! I'd give anything to be 17 again!

Got my college done several years ago form Oregon State. It was the best time of my life. Who would have thought that getting drunk and chasing woman for 4 years would get you so much money afterwards.
The hardest classes for me was anything to do with Math and Statistics. Advanced Macroeconomic Theory and Business Law were a bear.
Just remember in the end it's all worth it. Try to meet as many people as possible, it's the connections you make that will help you out the most not entirely what you learn.

The nurse thing is a cool gig. Live anywhere you want, great hours, good pay. My brother just got his RN and immediately up and moved to Hilo Hawaii. Nice.
I studied mechanical engineering, which was no picnic for me. While my business major buds were heading to the bar, I was off the the library. I probably spent 40+ hours a week on homework plus the 15-20 in class. Toughest classes for me were Advanced Kinematics (four bar linkages, planetary gear systems, etc.) and Advanced Fluid Mechanics (external fluid flow in the transition regime is tough!). At least now my business major buds make more money than I do, so I guess it was all worth it. Hey, what the-

Re: School sucks...
I went to OSU for 3 years as a Civil Engr major. Lived like a dog in a dive, worked every summer in a cannery or on a combine crew, did breakfast and lunch dishes during the school year to pay my way. Classes were tough, statics, dynamics, soil mechanics, hated diffy Q - 5 hours of class and 6 hours of homework every night.
I dropped out before my senior year to make money, go hunting, chase women, and make sure this career was what I wanted. BIGGEST MISTAKE OF MY LIFE. FINISH SCHOOL!
It has taken me 35 years to earn my Masters in the School of Hard Knocks. As an undegreed engineer, I constantly have to prove my self and have been very lucky to have the opportunities I have had. I have done the same work or more as the PE next to me but he makes twice what I do and does half the work. On top of my 9 hour day I have an hour commute each way as I can not afford to live next to work. After driving home, cooking dinner, working the dog, I sit down for my moonlight job doing designs on the side until midnight. I am lucky to have these opportunities as many of my friends have lost jobs and can not find employment. Wish I was 21 and back in school - life was easy!
Hang in there. Nursing is a great career, you can't get outsourced and can pick your location from the biggest city to the smallest town to live. Good luck and stick with it.

Re: School sucks...
I personally thought the college years were the best years of my life. Finished school in 3.5 years, got a double major, worked as a roofer, hunted way too much, camped and fished every weekend, drank too much, and married a women who hunts, fishes, is totally awesome all around (and is smokin' hot blonde - see buck and bull contest winner)! Classes were hard and time consuming at times, but even with that crunch time hits only a few times a year.
Now I'm in law school, and that still isn't too bad. Crunch time sucks way worse since each grade is determined by one test a semester. Everything is curved and the highest grade in the class (the top A out of a couple) is sometimes a 50%. But, all said and done I work as a law clerk, go to school, have a wife, and still make time to fish or hunt each week if I want it (except during the 2 to 3 weeks around finals). The key is figuring out what to study and how to manage your time. Stick with it, it only gets easier the more you do it! Just stay upbeat about life and enjoy!

Re: School sucks...
Hardest two classes I took at SOU for my degree were Geomorphology and Calculus. I couldn't do a calculus problem now if my life depended on it.

Amen to the calculus problem! I took way too many of those classes and still have nightmares of integrals and derivatives...
hang in there buddy.... before you know it, it'll all be done and you'll be happy that you did it.

Re: School sucks...
I had a GREAT time in college. Frat at Oregon, English major, more beer and women than I knew what to do with...
But the best years of my life are the ones I'm living right now.

Don't buy it! College is infinitely better than highschool. Class is harder, but the freedom makes it so much better.

Re: School sucks...
Hardest class I took was linear algebra. Don't let the name fool you, all three calculus classes as well as physics are prerequisites. I learned how to calculate how long it would take a donkey to climb a canonical mountain, where the trail varied in climb rate and the donkey’s pace slowed based on duration and climb rate. Obviously, these are skills that I use on a daily basis.

Also very true. College was the best four years of my life so far without a doubt. Such a blast. Perhaps it is the grad school cloud hanging over my head so.....how about wait till grad school.......high school is easy, college is fun and challenging, and grad school is say good bye to hunting for a few years....

Re: School sucks...
You know whats tougher than school, especially today, not having completed it. You are dead meat in the next 20 years without an education, unless you are smart and driven enough to start your own business.

I hear you guys, headed to diffy q here in a few minutes. Can't wait to find the inverse prime of the derivative of the graph of the function .

im not saying that it is tough, i have it pretty easy compared to some kids my age. Im just saying that with what i am hearing, it gets a heck of a lot harder as it goes on. I know that the job i want, my brother is currently an employee there, i will have to take as many chemistry and science classes as i can to be prepared. I know what i am in for
