Newport Inner Reef?
I'm hoping one you salty dogs can help me out a little.
Is there a shallow rocky area just south of the Newport bar? seems like several years ago I found a place to catch some rock fish and it seems like it was only about a mile south and maybe 1/2 mile out, does this sound correct?
I have GPS if anyone has coordinates for a close in rock pile or other structure that I can make some quick trips to. Your experience and help is appreciated!

Re: Newport Inner Reef?
goodkarma,
Yes u r right there is a reef below the bar and several reefs and rock structures south all the way to Yachats! There is also rock structure N also in shallow too. Be very careful this time of year as the swell can be on the series and out of NOWHERE it can double in size and you are in trouble, Don't turn your back on the sea when u r inside on these reefs friend. The close reef is just below the bouy line on the S side. Watch out. Do you have a chart of the entrance or the Blanco to Yaquina Head chart? Take a look at them and notice the fathom curves and pay attention to those low water readings when they do the soundings for the chart. I have numbers for these local spots however they are in TD's (Loran). A word of caution pay attention to the Marine weather on the V channnel 1, as it will give u the swell at Stonewall for a start, but don't be lulled by that too much as the swell only does one thing on it's way to the breakers, BIGGER. Always watch that close S reef on your outgoing and incoming bar crossings and give it a wide berth and err ALWAYS on the safe side. It will kill all of us if we don't watch it. Study the chart a bit and then go on a flat day and get used to it as there is some good fishing this time of year but you have to be aware of conditions and forecasts and all that. It can change quick too so don't get too far from the barn unless it's FLAT FLAT!
Good LUCK!

Re: Newport Inner Reef?
Chilly,
I greatly appreciate the information. I truly respect the ocean and never let down my guard even for a second. I pick my days carefully even with the decent boat I have. I probably won't venture on to big blue for a couple months yet but the fishing bug has got me preparing early this year.
Thanks again,

Re: Newport Inner Reef?
About 10 days ago we went of Theil Crk..( 3 miles south) and there are some rocks in 90 to 100 foot area. We were out of bait in and hour. 3 trays weren't enough. Lots of small ling and cabs.

Re: Newport Inner Reef?
Chilly One, Are you referring to the Pinnacles?
I had a bad experience there the first time I was out. I just got my C-Dory and wanted to venture over the bar and drop a line at Seal Rock. I had no experience so I took a friend whom I though had some. Turned out he didn’t know the local waters, and I was too inexperienced to know to read a chart or check with the Coast Guard for “Local Knowledge”. Once outside the demarcation line I headed south to drop off a couple crab traps then headed west again. It wasn’t real rough but certainly not flat. It was this time of year and I believe the weather channel stated 10 to 13 foot seas. Anyway as bad-luck would have it, I was on a direct course for the pinnacles. Just as we were going over, one of those double sized waves reached us. I think the only thing I did right that day was to realize I was committed and stayed on course. I know that wave is exaggerated in my memory, cause I remember it being at least 40ft high. Anyway, about the time the boat was vertical the wave broke over the cabin and flooded the cockpit. All I could see was a whole lot of green, and then we came shooting through and landed hard on the down side. We came through it scared but safe. That was 2 years ago, I’ve only been out one time since then, mostly I’ve spent the last 2 years training with the Auxiliary.
Now I believe I’m ready to try again, but I still have no local knowledge. That’s the reason I joined this group. I see a lot of extremely valuable information shared in this group, but it seems many of you have spent your life on the salt and take your experience and knowledge for granted. I'd really appreciate a discussion on what you Salty Dogs consider perfect conditions, acceptable conditions and “ I don’t think so” conditions at Newport, for us greenies.

Re: Newport Inner Reef?
I don't need fish bad enough to push anything. I have fished out of Newport for 38 years and I have seen plenty of smokers on the south reef.
I am glad you survived, I am sure it looked big....but 40 ft????
As a rule of thumb....when land disappears when you are in the trough, turn around. There is always another day.
I slip by the inside of the south reef all the time, but if in dougt.....go to the whistler and then south and you will never hit it.

Re: Newport Inner Reef?
Is this for real or are ya just pulling our chain Magoo? You should meet a now defunct member of this board that use to swim 10 miles in this stuff and jump 10 ft bar rollers with a face just for practice. I realize you are new to the Salty Dog board but wow!!!!!!
In all seriousness you should stay tuned for sage advice from folks here on this board. It may just save your life someday. WOW!!!!!
BTW, welcome to the Salty Dog Forum. Hope I did not offend you with all the WOW's but WOW!!!!!!

<font size="2" face="verdana, arial, helv">Nope not pulling anyone’s chain, but keep in mind the size of that wave was measured through my less than calm eyes, in reality I know it could not have been that big. Just goes to show ya what can happen to your perceptions when your scared sh**less.
