Want to help change the course of ODFW?
There has been a very hot battle going on involving the sport fishing community and the ODFW Commission recently.
It is an example of how out of touch the ODFW Commission is with the tag buying public of Oregon.
I have been deeply involved in the fight, but from the hunting side of my life, I see the same disconnect.
Remember: The ODFW Commission is 7 individuals appointed by the Governor. ONLY the Governor can appoint members. The Commission gives ODFW policy direction and can establish policy guidelines and directly controls ODFW.
There is a seat coming available for Legislative district 4. Corvallis, Eugene, Coos Bay etc...
Stan Steele has applied for the post. It is a volunteer position that is unpaid. Stan had to really chew on whether he wanted to or could afford to serve, but decided he really wanted to help move things back toward focus on the resource and hunters/fishers of this state.
Bill Monroe wrote about this in today's column in the Oregonian. If you want to see some positive change at the ODFW Commission, please take a moment to write a quick e-mail asking the Governor to apoint Stan Steele to the ODFW Commission.
Mike Carrier is the Governor's Natural Resource Policy Director. Letters will be handled by him.
From Bill's article:
"Last hope? Gov. Ted Kulongoski's best chance to ease anglers' growing angst is to appoint one of their own to fill a pending vacancy on the seven-member commission. It's been many years since the commission had someone specifically representing its primary constituent group.
"Stan Steele of Corvallis wants the job. Steele, 57, a retired Oregon State Police fish and wildlife enforcement trooper, is a professional fishing guide born and raised in the Willamette Valley.
"He knows the state like the back of his hand, is highly regarded in the Legislature and, most important, carries the trust of thousands of his fellow citizens.
"More on Steele in another column, but first, and most important: Voice your support as soon as possible to the governor's office. Send them via e-mail as well to: Michael.Carrier@state.or.us.
Please don't hesitate. The decision will be made very soon.

Stan Steele is a good man!
It'd be tough to find someone with his experience that could do better or work harder as one of our commissioners!

Having been checked by Stan over the years and discussing with him hunting and fishing I think he would be a great addition to the commission. He was the type of Fish and wildlife enforcement Oregon needed and still needs. He was good!!! Not to mention he is a hunter, fisherman and a good guy. And is respected by everyone who knows him. This is the type of person we need on the commission so i would send a letter folks!!

Unfortunately i don't think our green governor will ever allow anyone with his ties into their little club . my hunting partners are all retired osp and i beleve they all have way to much common sense to be allowed into such a responsible position

Re: Want to help change the course of ODFW?
I find this interesting, becasue I would not call the current commission anything close to green. I think green would be good, right now I see it as industry pitted against the public.

I had the same thought about our "Green Governor" when I saw him on the front page of the Oregonian this past week. How can he be so "green" and encourage this?
Sorry for the sidetrack. It just stuck in my craw.
Let's try to send some positive letters and ask for "ballance" on the commssion and help to restore some trust with the tag buyers of this state.

There's a lot more to Stan Steele than most realize...
He's pretty green; in the good sort of way...

Bump up.
Come on guys, in 1 minute you can send an e-mail and get involved in making the ODFW Commission a place that will listen to hunters.
