Default another Coos Bay question...

I have another question for the Coos Bay experts (Mello-Yello, tailchaser, anyone else?). Does anyone fish for sturgeon in Coos Bay? Is this an OK time of the year to do that? Where do they fish for them? I still haven't made it up that way, and may try if things dry out for a few days. I was looking for something to kill time while soaking pots. The ocean off Brookings and Crescent City continues to be too nasty to get out on. Thanks guys...Bob

Tailchaser has the scoop on the gators. I've personally never (deliberately) fished for them, though I'd like to. Diamondback does some sturg fishing too...wonder where's he's been hiding?

I'll ask around...

I know they fish for them a bit on the coquille down here in bandon.. but I believe the best place to go is up at reedsport..

like Mellow said. Tailchaser is the man for this question.

Thanks for the reply Lepper and M-Y. I have fished sturgeon (gators?) around Dean's Creek on the Umpqua before and I know a guy that catches them on the Coquille. I was just looking for something to do in the Coos Bay area to kill time while the crab pots were soaking - assuming we couldn't get outside the breakwater. Do herring come into the bay? Cheers...Bob

Sorry, I've been hiding on the river this weekend. Yes they do catch sturgees on the coos, however where they do that is a pretty good ride up the bay compared to where you crab. If you wanted to do both in the day I would hit the umpqua. The distances from one to the other is only about a mile apart roughly there. As of coos bay, one common area is under the main north bend bridge and towards the triangle (just east upriver of the bridge and there are three channel markers in a triangle shape). Find water that is about 12' on an outgoing tide and drop some sand shrimp on the bottom. To say the least the bite isn't hot, but when you have a chance at a fish it's almost always a keeper. Hopefully that helps. I guess if you were crabbing near the Empire boat launch the ride wouldn't be too bad now that I think of it. Probably 15-20 min. or so.

Tailchaser,
I decided to hold off and wait for things to dry out a bit - thought it might be better for crabbing. I may try to go the end of this week. I will report when I return. Thanks again for the info. Bob

I didn't need to see that picture. It's amazing what a week of sunshine does for a person's enthusiasm...I need to get my boat wet!

Coos Bay Guys:
The ocean was soooooo flat on Wednesday, we decided to do the crab/bottom fish combo out of Brookings instead of heading to Coos Bay to try the crab/sturgeon combo. We ran south towards Point St. George and ended up with all of the rockfish and lings we wanted and 8 dungies as well. I may still try to slip up to Coos Bay before the end of the month. Thanks again for the advice. Bob

Here's a picture of my buddy Chris with a nice vermillion. Note how rough the ocean is...
