Re: Railroad Spikes??????
I know there abundant here in Salem. All you have to do is walk the tracks by Silverton rd next to the fair grounds or Blossim near the Indian school. Everytime they do work on the tracks they leave a bunch.

Re: Railroad Spikes??????
What weight sinkers are you looking for? I used to melt lead into one of those mini muffin tins. They would weigh between 12 and 16 ounces.

Re: Railroad Spikes??????
Go down to the train yard over by SE 17th the one Holgate runs over I think the yard is called the Brookyn Yard. Walk the track with a big heavey bag pick up all you need.
Just don't let the old man see you or he will take the spike and send you packing.
We us ethe spike for our dropper when we go shad fishin. Very cheap and they work great.

Re: Railroad Spikes??????
Be careful while walking the tracks for spikes..Burlington Northern and others have a no trespassing tolerated policy and many have been ticketed while gathering the spikes.
had a buddy find out first hand in kalama last fall. A WSP officer driving by stopped him and ticketed him, as it falls in the WSP and OSP guidelines to enforce. I believe he recieved a $250 ticket, and No..the area and tracks are rarely posted and this site is one of them.

Re: Railroad Spikes??????
Yeah, I've gotten a few warnings from the Multco sheriff for walking the UPRR tracks in the gorge. If the railroad cops spot you they probably won't be nearly as tolerant.

Re: Railroad Spikes??????
Jerry, saw all those cars full of old ties parked in Garibaldi. Looked like a lot of work to me. You must have a zillion spikes.

Re: Railroad Spikes??????
Thanks for all the help everyone.
love2fish
I'm looking for a variety of weights for both the Willy and Columbia. I've herd up to 16oz for the Bonnie area. Thanks
Jerry Dove
I sent you an email. Thanks
Land Shark
I would be interested, alot closer
Does anyone know the weight of one of these spikes in onces? I'm also trying to get an Idea on how much is lost to the drink on a daily basis so I can figure out how many I would need. And last but not least, How are you attatching these spikes to you rig? Drilling holes? Or tied on?
Thanks
CM

Re: Railroad Spikes??????
We use to tie them onto the terminal rigging with white store string that was tied around the spike. Also ran a little electrical tape over the knot on the spike. Rig them up so the spike head is down and it will grab better.
Rodger that on the spikes down on the Tillamook line. There are spikes everywhere. There's a truck load of them at the mouth of the Salmonberry.

Corky Monster...
I was cleaning up around a boat ramp in the gorge a couple of years ago and came across a bucket of spikes... Still have em, all you have to do is come pick them up in O.C.

Re: Railroad Spikes??????
I accidently made a couple new posts on this.I'm having another cup of coffe right now so I dont make the same mistake.again....and again. There might be some info you could use.
If I remember right the spikes weigh about 9 oz.maybe a little more.I use dacron leader to tie them on then runa 12 or 15 lb leader between that and my swivel or slider. That way you wont lose a bunch of terminal gear. Some places you lose your gear every cast others you may get 3-4 out of it.Depends where your fishin.

Re: Railroad Spikes??????
Years ago we used spikes by drilling a small hole near the tip. Then we used snap-swivels at the end of the drop line. Good luck!

Re: Railroad Spikes??????
Corkie Monster,
I will pour the sinkers for you if you supply the lead. I have molds all the way up to 48 ounce. Let me know if the spikes don't work.
I'm in Sheridan, but up on the Columbia every weekend fishing, so working out a swap would be pretty easy.
Thanks, Scott

Re: Railroad Spikes??????
I use railroad spike for sturgeon weights. I drill a small hole near the sharp end. I usually get 4 or 5 spikes drilled before I break a bit. The spikes I use are about 12 - 16 oz. I picked up a 5 gallon bucket out by a recently repaired railroad siding. Just asked the UPRR guy if he minded, and he said no. I use a snap swivel and son\me 20 pound test line to tie it to my 3-way. Then I use 80 pound test main line, and if (when) it snags, I just break the weight off.

Re: Railroad Spikes??????
If your wanting pyramid type sinkers I've found a damp bucket of sand makes a mighty find mold, just tamp it down and use a ready made sinker of your desired weight to make the mold.A camp stove will melt enough lead to pour a half dozen or so at a time.Just have your wire hoops ready to go before ya pour.I'm a little short on lead myself though, does anybody know of a place to get lead reasonably priced or maybe scavenged.

Re: Railroad Spikes??????
I would love to swap with you, only my molds are cannon ball. If you are interested let me know.
I just got the melting pot and molds for Christmas, (new toys) besides it gets me out of the house and at least doing something other that dreaming about fishing.
Thanks, Scott

Re: Railroad Spikes??????
Corky, looks like you have plenty of folks to help you. I will go ahead and collect some anyways. OneBadFish, I work for the little RR in town...Portland Terminal in the MOW dept. Still makes me nervous having people wandering tracks that shouldn't be out there. BE CAREFUL!

I'm still interested in the spikes. I would like to try and hook up to get them from you.

Do you have pyramid or bank sinker molds?
Thanks

Re: Railroad Spikes??????
Folks, remember it is not legal to take anything from a rail road. spikes or ties. I have had several emails about the spikes and ties. I can arrange for both, but do not, I repeat do not take it up on your self to help your self. Jerry
