Default 4 strokes- how many hours is alot?

So, give me a sense for how many hours you can reasonably expect to get out of a honda, yamaha 4 stroke outboard in the 100+ hp class? Normal wear and tear, maintained reasonably.

1,000 hours on the meter seems to be in a moderate-high range to me. Not low, but not extremely high.

What have you guys seen accumulating on yours?

My F150 and T8 are 3 years old next month. I've got 80 hours on the F150 and about 100 on the T8. Doesn't sound like much, but the way I fish for salmon (drift mooch) doesn't lead to thousands of hours on the engines. I probably fish 8-10 hours for every hour I actually put on the engines.

I'd fully expect to get 2500+ hours out of a properly maintained outboard.

Mine will never see that many while they're in my possesion. I don't own a boat long enough to put a ton of hours on them.

I have an 8 year old Honda 130 with almost 2,000hrs and running strong.Maintenance is the key, along with having it propped right.

I have a 10 year old suzuki 70 with 800 hours. I plan on getting twice the years and hours out of it. It is running strong right now.

If you compare them to a Car motor, & Honda actually uses some of the same motors for both applications, 200,000 miles is common for these modern 4 stroke overhead cam motors, before a major rebuild is needed & at a ave. of 50 mph, that would be 4,000hrs, however cars have tranmissions, & usually run at lower rpms than most Boat applications, So I think time will tell, as we are putting them to the test now. My 7 season mostly salt 115 yamamerc has over 1,200hrs & still running strong.

A lot of guys on the east coast will put 200-500 hours on thier motors a year. In a few short years there motors wil be pushing 2000 plus hours and still going strong. Its not unheard of for them to keep going into the 3000-4000 hr range with no problems.

The average recreational boater puts 30 hours a year on thier motor. Good up keep and maintance and your four stoke motor should last a long long time.

My last boat when it sold had 3600 hrs on it. It was bought new in 2002 and sold in 2007. The new owner still uses it 2 to 3 days a week. It was a 2002 60hp Mercury EFI.
