Default where to bank it on Saturday in Central OR?

Hey Trouters!
My 6 and 8 year olds want to chase some trout this weekend. Any suggestions within a couple of hours of Bend?

I'm thinking a lake will be a better option so that the boys can run around. They are bait fisherboys (one prefers bobbers, the other sinkers)and I'll have my fly and spinning rods so we should have the bases covered.

Haystack? Prineville? Ochoco? Maybe Chickahomeny is iced off? Any suggestions and tips would be greatly appriceater!

two fister,

i can run out to haystack and check to see if it's ice free or not. i usually do pretty good from the boat landing to the fishing platfrom using marshmellows and worms off the bottom. i haven't fished it yet this year.

Prineville or Ochoco, ice or not. If the ice is good your youngsters will have a great time. Crooked river or the middle Deschutes from Redmond to Terribone. Haystack is usually slow this time of year.

Joe,
How's the bank access at Pine Hollow? I've read that it's more of a boat fishery.

Mark,
I'll be in Madras tomorrow so I can swing by Haystack. Swing by 4th and B in the morning if you have a chance to say hi. I'll be sampling wells by the car lot.

Sounds like Chickahominy has pretty shakey ice and little bit of open water. I'm thinking that Prineville or Ochoco should be pretty ice free. Has anybody laid eyes on either?

Thanks again,
TF

Hope the kids get some fish where ever they go. Dont forget fire wood.

I would be interested in the condition of haystack as well, I have a old wood db that we repainted and fixed up the unfinished bottom, and now its ready for the easy water. Just want to see how fast she'll sink

Thanks Again & Be safe

It's already loaded into the recycling tub that makes a good day trip wood carrier. Smores kit is packed. Hot dogs and buns ready. About 100 juice boxes locked and loaded. Various sweet and salty snacks on standby.

When Momma goes off on a girls weekend trip Dad lets the boys have a bit leeway!

Prineville by the dam or Haystack. Both have open spaces for the little ones to run around, and there are fish to be caught.

Hey Brian!
Looks like we might be counting on Prineville. I drove by Haystack this morning and it was covered with rotten ice. Thinnest spots could be melted soon, but I don't think that'll produce much open water. We'll probably give Prineville a shot by the dam moving to the Crooked if it's iced over. It'll be a good day to shoot the BB gun if nothing else.
I'll swing by Haystack on my way home to see if there's any great change after a sunny and warm day. I'll update this post tonight.
Thanks for the advice!

2 Fister, i fished Prineville at Social Security beach 2 weeks ago and did well. BumbleBee Powerbait and cured roe were the 2 best baits!

Prineville res. looks ok on the west end by the dam I Flew over it today with My boss. Lots of room/sand if the water is right. Always good for a couple 16"ers, on power bait.

two fister, I wouldn't leave out the Deschutes. From mirror pond down to Terrebone can have some great fishing this time of year.

dartonvpr,
It's pretty much in our backyard, but it's too high right now to fish with the little guys. When you're up to your waist in the middle of a tangle of willows it can get kind of frustrating and pretty darn dangerous. I've gone face first more than once after getting my feet tangled in submerged willows and brush.

The Little Black Stones should be starting any day now (if they haven't already) and that can be great fishing.

Thanks!

Hey Guys!
We ended up at Prineville by the new boat ramp. The fishing was dead, but it was a beautiful day and the boys had a great time. We built a fire in the rocks and roasted hot dogs and made s'mores. It was a great day considering we didn't get a single nibble.

As a matter of fact, the boys had such a great time that they both commented on how much more they like bank fishing than fishing from a boat. I'm currently shopping for a boat. They said bank fishing is "less serious" (oops, my bad) and they really like being able to run around while I watch their rods. Then they both agreed that they hope I never buy a boat again because they only want to bank fish...whaaa????....I had to bribe them with cookies and root beer to keep that little nugget to themselves before my CEW (Chief Executive Wife) got wind of it. That'd shoot a big fat hole right in the middle of my "but honey, I need the bigger boat for the boys" argument.

Thanks again for the tips.

Glad that you and the boys had a good time. You might need to acquire a standard issue neuralyzer if the boys can't seem to forget how much fun they had running around on the bank roasting hot dogs and s'mores. come to think of it, that does sound like a fun time.
