Threemuch and Popeye
Hey fellas,
While doing a search on halibut harpoons I found threads where you guys were selling some.
Anymore coming available, or a thread with current pics on how best to make one?
Thanks,
Joe

Re: Threemuch and Popeye
Birdnest...I DID make a proto-type, two piece aluminum harpoon (it's on my boat  ) but unfortunately, after tallying up the costs of material, machine time, and labor, it would have been WAY too costly to market!
However, if Keta would want to, he's more than welcome to pattern some after mine (proly much lighter tho).

Re: Threemuch and Popeye
I was at a local sporting goods w/h this weekend and found a harpoon tip with cable for $18.95. You would need to make a handle and teather. PM me for info.
I believe they are not an I-fish sponser.
Peace, Tom

Re: Threemuch and Popeye
The materials and time spent are way more than $20.00 bucks!

Re: Threemuch and Popeye
I made a bunch, and sold some, but I am currently out of stock of the shafts and handles, I think I have three tips left. I could make some more, say, in exchange for a halibut seat during the opener?!?
The cost of materials is about $40ish. Mine were turned out of stainless using 3/8 for the tip, and 1/4 for the shaft. If I made more, I might beef it up to 1/2 for the tip and 3/8 for the shaft. It would take more stabbing pressure, but it would be much tougher. You can mount the shaft into any old handle, but heavy will help sink it into the fish, but sink if you drop it. I made cheap ones out of PVC, and one for myself out of 1.5" aluminum shaft.
I can't find my pics, so they must be at home, or can take some, shoot me an email.

Re: Threemuch and Popeye
I forgot to post earlier that Englunds in Newport had the economy ones, last year at least, for around $65.00

Re: Threemuch and Popeye
I learned to use the knurling tool to make one like popeyes, but no way I am going to buy a $40 piece of aluminum and put 20 hours of machining into it so someone else can drop it overboard!
The keta design is good if you have access to a welder to make the tip. If not, turn, mill, and grind!

Keta-
Can you send me a set of those drawings too?
I have a pretty good idea for another new one, but I'm curious.

Re: Threemuch and Popeye
Thanks for the input. Threemuch you are always welcome on my boat, tip or no tip.
Lee-my Ifish email is at work, so I will have to check it tomarrow, thanks for the effort.
We have a used marine exchange store up here that I want to scour and see if I can find a speargun with a break away tip. If I run across anything extra I will pick it up and pass it along.

Re: Threemuch and Popeye
Birdnest,
To make a good harpoon head takes about 2 hrs shop time @ $65 per hr. The time is free for me but my friendly machinist (brother) frowns on too many jobs that aren't for family. When I get home I'll send you the drawings of how I make my harpoons. Popeye’s was a work of art and not an ordinary tool, I'm trying to get my brother to make one like Popeye's but he has too much backloged paying work.

Re: Threemuch and Popeye
Roger that. I will fire up the harpoon mill (or lathe) again. Big dogs this time 1/2" points with 3/8" shaft.

Re: Threemuch and Popeye
Kurt, your revised dimensions of 3/8" shaft and 1/2" head should work well. The harpoon that NorRiver Dave and I assembled last year was that size and seems plenty stout enough for halibut in our area. The plans I used were courtesy of Pilar. For a machinist this is laughably simple but for us other guys it's a little harder.
Remember you don't throw it! Attach a rope and float for the big boys.

Just got raw materials, and will start production today. I will post a photo when I have one done.
