Default Help - whining gun dog

I have a 1 1/2 year old female Lab Gun Dog that has been trained by a professional. We got her in November and she has a good start on being a gun dog. HOWEVER, I cannot stop her from whining and it is driving my hunting partners crazy. We would appreciate any help and/or names of trainers who con help solve the problem.

There are a lot more knowledgeable guys on here, but I can't help wonder if she's whinning because of ambition, drive and excitment....or some other reason.
How many hunts on her?

My dog Chance whins a little when it's slow....or we missed.

heres what i did with my lab... not sure if its what everyone else does but she whined alot hunting and at home whenever she was bored or forced to stay put or excited or always acctually... when she would whine i would say quite and grab her mouth and apply pressure to the top of her nose till she whined again, then say quite and immediatly let go, then she know as soon as she stops whining she gets rewarded(release of pressure). worked awsome and in short time( a week or so) she was pretty cured and knew quite. my friend has a lab same age he turned to smakin him in the nose and ended up with a whinny hand shy lab... not good you dont want a hand shy dog. worked well for me.

Tell your hunting patners to fetch their own duck. Stay by the dog and give her a nuge when she whines. I like pick up a switch and let my dog know that its close at hand.

My lab is 2 and a half and this was her 3rd season and she just started whining in the blind about a month ago. It seems she does it out of boredom or excitement. When birds are working she'll shut up but if we miss or we never get a shot she starts whining again. I tried smacking her on the nose but it didn't work. Sunday I put a shock collar on her and would tingle her and say no everytime she would whine. It worked pretty well. She stopped but it took over an hour. I don't know if it is totally cured and won't until next season but it seemed to work pretty well.

If your dog is professionaly trained I would call the pro and ask him or her what they reccomend. Personally, I have a high powered dog that whines occasionaly. I either grab her lips and pinch them into her canines or correct with the collar and command "Quiet". She knows what it means.

I'm afraid your stuck with the whine unless you can get a bark collar to remind her to keep quiet. That will probably work but you'll need a quality collar. I suggest Sport Dog Deluxe Bark collar.

Smacking her is going to create more problems and not get rid of the whining. Don't go down that route.

As for your "hunting partners" having problems with her whining ... those guys aren't partners. That's a much easier 2 step fix.

Remember, they are not family members, your dog is and your dog will sit by you not matter what!

Mention you don't appreciate their comments once and then move on.

Life's too short to spend quality time in a blind with "friends" that make cracks about your dog or anything else for that matter. Drop em.

Upsets me just to read something like that. You're not the only one that has had hunting friends that were clueless. Emphasis on has had!

Have you ruled out the dog isn't cold or uncomfortable? Combine misery, slow hunting for a young dog which normally lives in the comfort of a warm house, this can be an issue. Just want to make sure that's ruled out first (no, it's not a bad thing, just an issue to check off or not). Does the dog have a soft temperment? Do you work some of the energy out of the dog before expecting a young dog to set still in a duck blind for hours? Do you work on at home with the dog sitting still and being quiet for food, before walks, getting into the car...?

My lab did the same thing when in a boat or blind but not at home. I used the collar turned down to it's lowest effective setting and bliped him several times each time he would whine and command "quite". The collar was turned down enough that you could not see a physical reaction from the dog but he could feel it buzz him. I did this before hunting season while he was in the boat while I was fishing. 2 trips and he was cured.

The easy way to cure that problem....Shoot more birds

Seriously try all of the above and chances are the dog will calm down with age and time in the blind. Assuming your dog is just really excited about the retrieving part and not uncomfortable or cold.

Good Luck and hang in there.

Dog might not understand you do not want him to whine. Dog must know what you want.
That said, I got an insight that might help the problem of barking correction. When dogs bark(or whines) owner says 'bark bark' with dog.
Key point: Then you can say 'No bark bark!' and the dog relates as to WHAT you want. Worth a try.

I also get on one knee and hold my dog and give command 'Listen' while being still. Dogs get it. Helps to get them to .....listen.Good Luck
