Amen brother. I am hoping to catch my first 'butt this year. Presently I'm looking into building a harpoon. I think it was Pete that posted some homemade jobs that looked real nice. Anybody remember that thread?

Believe the most recent post on homemade harpoons was by Threemuch last summer. He even made a few extra tips & shafts which he sold here on the board.... do a search... should come up.

I found the Threemuch thread, but alas the pics were no longer available and there was a mention of being sold out. :depressed:

We have a used marine store here in Bellingham, I am going to see if I can find an old spear gun for cheap.

Birdnest, you can make a detachable tip harpoon yourself. You'll need a post hole digger replacement handle and some stainless rod, drill bits and drill, epoxy, heavy stranded wire and crimps, cord and anchor float and (the hard part) some tips.

The tips I use were made by a friend and are 3/4" OD and 3/8" ID, so the SS rod is 3/8". The tips are 6" long and are drilled down 1/2 the length from one end with a 3/8 hole to fit over the shaft. The other end is tapered to a point. I think you can buy these somewhere but I know not where. The shaft is fitted and epoxied into a hole drilled into the flat end of the post hole digger handle to make the handle of the harpoon.

The tip fits on the end of the shaft and is attached to the anchor ball and cord with a short section of wire through a small hole drilled through the tip. When you get a fish next to the boat you drive the tip through the fish and the tip goes clear through. You pull the handle out and the tip toggles flat against the white side of the fish. He then takes off dragging the cord and if he really takes off he drags the ball.

You can have more than one tip, cord and ball. Most fish are not too hard to subdue once harpooned but I recommend against just tying the cord to the boat. If the fish goes down and hits the end of the cord the tip will pull out or break cord or wire and the fish is back on the rod and reel and very agitated.

There are several who have done this and some of the harpoons are quite elaborate, some are cheap and simple. The one I made is pretty low budget and works well for what it is.

Birdsnest, I will be making some tips, not quite as beefy as what Pilar is talking about, probably half inch OD, 3/8 ID. One or two will have your name on it.

Saw this thread, so I thought I'd ask the boss for the 13th and 14th off--YIPEEEE!!!!!! He bit!!!!!!!!
Now all I gotta do is find a ride, and pray for decent weather. My boy Ug isn't a real big 'But fishing fan, so I may need to find a ride...anybody need a salty, experienced "halibut winch" for the opener?? I bring lunch, gas $, clean up happily, and am getting pretty handy with a filet knife!!
Oh yeah--(worked last time ) "I'm not hungry, I'm not homeless, but I will work for fish!!!!"
God Bless!

<font size="2" face="verdana, arial, helv"> Sweet. Let me know what I can do as far as upfront cost. I will send you a prepaid shipping container.

Our halibut season is pretty much May and June up here. I have my eye on a couple of banks in the area where the Straight of Juan de Fuca dumps into Puget Sound. Not as great as Neah Bay, or the Oregon coast, ect, but I can reach these areas from Bellingham by boat for a day trip. Let me know if you are going to be close.

 Harpoons: Englund Marine and Harry's in Newport on the bayfront carry full harpoon set ups, or the tips, or the parts you need to do whatever u need. No Problem! Hose 'em off with fresh water and store 'em properly and they will last for YEARS and YEARS!
Good Luck!

Uhhhh...yeah, assuming the extra 't' in 'But's is a typo... and that name Hawg Caller doesn't mean you are stalking me after seeing my now nearly famous almost nude picture from the 2003 "Old, Fat, Springer Slayers" calender Ugly Green was trying to pawn off on the unsuspecting wives of our Ifish brethren as a pinup "fishing godesses" calender this Christmas...I'm in!!!
Ok--seriously, my buddy UglyGreen (Brad) said he'd be in for a run, but (pun intended) she's an open boat, and if you have 2 extra spots, my guess is he'd enjoy riding with you too.
If you don't already know--Brad is a legend on Ifish. Has his own fanclub too. Fishbait is the president, but if you haul us along, he'll send you a free membership--which includes the Lamiglas BigShadBradShad IM 1000000 16'6 ShadBlaster rod, and ABU Garcia's new Signature Series 'ShadBuster' spinning reel, AND a list of all the waypoints that have made Ug the legend that he is (courtesy of me!).
Oh, and you'll have the pleasure of his company and "INCONCEIVABLE!!" fishiness.
Sheesh...who could resist.
As Ug's agent, I would, of course, be forced to tag along

Birdnest,

Seattle Marine sells a good, affordable harpoon. I got one from them last year and am pleased with the quality and the price.
