Hewescraft Regatta
Hey all you Hewescraft folks! I think it is time to start thinking about a tuna regatta for the Hewescraft fleet. I have been looking at the calendar and July 16-17-18 looks like a great time for a costal adventure. Tuna, Salmon, and Halibut, maybe some crab thrown in for good measure. I know it is the middle of winter but I need something! Planning an event will help to pass the days until TUNA! What do you all think? Does this date work? Is anyone else interested? Let's start the discussion and see where we get.
BTW! This is not exclusionary...all Salty Dogs would be more than welcome to join us! I know we have 4 or 5 Hewescraft boats on the SD list. I would like to get to know them better, as well as our float mates in them plastic boats, and other soup cans!
Dave, who is having a bad case of the Jones this year :depressed:

I will be up a Echo Bay resort. It is on the north eastern end of Vancouver Island. You can
find the exact listing on line if you want, just do a search for Echo bay resort. The fishing should be hot that time of year
Can't wait.

Re: Hewescraft Regatta
uboatcdr,
Good morning! Yes... I have been to the Rockpile a couple of dozen times since I got my boat. Living here it makes it much easier to watch the weather and ocean conditions so that I can make that run.
Albacore Tuna Capt (of Salty Dog fame) who Captains the BLITZ was kind enough to let me tag behind him the first time I took my boat out that far. Since then I have become more comfortable in going out those distances and have some numbers locked in the GPS for future fishing excursions.

:depressed: I will be with you guys in spirit. I don't think I will be in a position to drag "No Quater" down to your neck of the woods. Besides I don't feel I am quite a tuna boat captain yet. I wish you a warm sun on your face and slippery deck underfoot.

Re: Hewescraft Regatta
July 16 , 17 and 18. Tuna !!
Question :
I was just thinking about tuna in July,,,
I know I dont know what the heck Im talking about but ,,,, It seems that Depoe is a favorite port for many of the Salty Dogs.
If we want lots of company we should take it to where the most folks are ,,,
What port are you thinking about W.P. ?Are you willing to trailer W.P. to somewhere like Depoe or is that the port you are thinking anyways.
I would love to get a big bunch of Salty's together for my first rodeo. Yeee Hawwww. id. painter

Re: Hewescraft Regatta
Depoe Bay is where I was thinking of. Great port and relatively close fish (mostly). Wouldn't mind going to the south though. Not fond of the Columbia bar so prefer not going there.

Re: Hewescraft Regatta
Fuel capacity and boat size are going to limit me to the Rock Pile. I can only hope the tuna come in that close this year. After going to the TA meeting last weekend I think I can feel a case of Tuna Fever coming on... I was infected by a whole room full of carriers...
The downside to this trip is that bottom fishing will be closed at the Rock Pile this year during salmon season, so mixed bags will be hard to come by unless you run back in close to shore to score your mixed bag.
Let's keep this trip in mind for late July or August when we tend to get soft ocean conditions for days in a row.

Re: Hewescraft Regatta
Do you Hewescraft owners think a 176 Searunner with a 50hp 4 stroke would be seriously underpowered? Thanks.

Re: Hewescraft Regatta
backlash442,
In my opinion, "yes". I feel the need for speed in going and coming from where I will be fishing. My 90 pushes my 17'9" Searunner just right (IMHO) and I would think a 50 on the same boat would be way under powered.

Count me in. Is the 31 gallons onboard enough for the trip in sloppy water or should I carry 12 more?? 20 Sea Runner with a 90Honda.

Re: Hewescraft Regatta
I carrier 34 in the on-board tank and had 2-12 gallon tanks above deck. I have added approx. 38 more gallons below deck this year. Last year I considered my fuel to be only slightly above minimum. I would carry at least a 12 gallon spare tank for your set-up. Just my opinion!

Re: Hewescraft Regatta
Newer member, first time to salty dogs. I have a 19' Searunner w a 115hp merc 2 stroke, I think power is adequate, concern is 34 gal fuel. I run on vhf chan 68 also cb, gps, and fish finder. I fish alot with bug_flicker. I live in Battleground and have only been in the Columbia and Willamette. Plan on alot of fishing this year hope to hear from some of you.

Re: Hewescraft Regatta
Ok, I've never been tuna fishing, but I woulld like to share what I know about my gas consumption. I have been to the ranch (34 mi from Newport) several times. Worst trip used 19 gal (climbing every wave, not a sea for tuna), best used 12 round trip (68 mi) on my 20 Hewescraft Searunner 20' with 90 HP Honda. I'm planning on upgrading to a 52 gal underdeck tank, which is available from the dealer for about $330. I'll put it in myself. I think this will be just about right, but I'm only going by what WP has experienced in a similar boat with a bigger engine and a LOT more weight (ice and tuna). I think it would be one hellava long day to pass all that gas through the Honda! If anyone thinks I'm off base, please let me know, otherwise I'm out floating in a RocketWear suit!

Re: Hewescraft Regatta
Fulldeck,
52 gallons on your rig should be more than adequate. Last year I carried 58 gallons and always had spare fuel. The one recommendation I would make is a fuel flow meter and an objective test of your capacity. Running out of fuel is a disaster that shouldn't happen! This year I should have 72 gallons +/-, just to be on the safe side!
Tally-Ho it is off for tuna (and salmon and halibut and rockfish and lingcod)I go!!!

Ray,
All groups need to have someone with a plastic boat...for comic relief! You are always welcome to share my ocean with me...anytime! We will even make that boat of yours an honorary Hewescraft!
