salty boat dilema..
Well I currenlty have a 19' alumaweld with a 90 hp on it..
I want something bigger more sea worthy..
here's the dilema..
I have found a 22' 84 bayliner with a brand spankin new motor on it.. it is a tropy.. has a brand new suzuki 115.. seems kinda small for that size of boat.. (already talked to dealer and we can work out an upgrade on that.. )
Dilema is.. getting into an older boat. had an older boat before my alumaweld and it had issues.. just from being old. This has a nice deep V.. would work great for the ocean runs to halibut grounds and tuna fishing.. and fuel milage wouldn't be awful with the 4 stroke on there.
um.. so.. all thoughs welcome.. brainstorm.. pros cons.. the works..
I do know I would have a lot more boat to tow around.. um.. the decisions..

Re: salty boat dilema..
I hear ya Dave... I've been looking for my "next boat" for quite a while now. For anyone on a budget, there is no such thing as the perfect boat, that has every feature & aspect you want. So ya just gotta decide what's at the top of the list, and decide what you can live without. Only you can decide that.
My only comments on the boat you mention are: (1) in the size range you mention, I would rather have the new 4 stroke outboard than an I/O, and (2) if it is hand-laid glass, give it one extra point; if it is chopped glass, subtract a point.
Good luck....... Mark Mc

Re: salty boat dilema..
Now when you say "wet deck" do you mean it has scuppers? I much prefer a wet deck, as long as they designed it so the deck level is way above the waterline. That is, enough margin so your load of people, fish, ice & gear doesn't sink you to the point where water is gushing into the scuppers. (I fished from a 17 ft dory for a while; after about 500 lbs of fish in it we had to plug the scuppers). Also, assuming the scuppers are big enough so that water quickly drains.
I assume this is what you mean by "wet deck", vs water has penetrated the deck core and it is now saturated & needs a new deck & who knows what else.

Re: salty boat dilema..
Definately not enough power for that boat. I've got a 20' Trophy I'm about to sell and it has a 120hp and I wish it had a 150hp, not just for extra speed but the added power helps the boat get better fuel mileage.

Re: salty boat dilema..
I've got to agree. I have a 22' center console (light weight) with a 225 hp Honda and would still like more power. But that's just me
One can always back off on the throttle

Re: salty boat dilema..
ya The lack of power might keep me from this boat.. although it does have room for a 2nd 115 on it..
By Wet dock.. it's weird that is what the guy called it anyway.. basically no scuppers.. but the back is very open... infact, you can walk back to where the motor is and take another step and step off the boat, all you have to do is step over a little 6inch board thing with a big hole in it for water.. I'd say more a version of a self bailing deck???
Corrid.. What are the specs on your boat I might be interested.. shoot me an email..

Re: salty boat dilema..
Dave, I'm a little confused. A "self bailing" deck has to have holes for the water to drain out. Those holes are called scuppers. Maybe the itsy-bitsy holes with the ping-pong-ball check valves are not called scuppers by certain boat salsemen?..?
Whatever you want to call it, for a self-bailing deck to work, there has to be enough bouyancy to push the boat up so gravity pulls the water out, and it has to be designed so that water sheds & drains off the deck towards those holes. So before you buy anything like that, do a test and dump a bunch of water on the deck and see where it goes. JMHO

Re: salty boat dilema..
Several years back I was looking at a Bayliner. I asked the salesman if it had a self-bailing cockpit -- he said yes.
Looking closer, I saw there were no scuppers. The salesman explained that water on the deck drained into the bilge where it was pumped overboard. To him, this was "self-bailing".
Riiiight.....

Re: salty boat dilema..
ya. I took her out for tuna. on one of the perfect days last summer.. and she did fine.. I'm just thinking a little bigger boat would be nicer.. not to push the elements going out.. but to push the elements getting back!
I do like the fuel economy of my stryker with the 90 suzuki.. I average about 5 mpg.. right around 2 gallons an hour.. on trip out was averaging about 20mpg (gps) way back in.. around 30...

Re: salty boat dilema..
I fished with a friend all last summer on his 21ft Trophy with a 150 Johnson (injected two stroke). The power combo was excellent in terms of getting on plane and economy, plus the hull design is great for the saltwater.
Just as a side comment, he put 100lbs or so in the bow to help balance out the load, it really made a very nice difference. Over this winter he has had some steel plates made to take the place of the innertubes with sand.
So it would seem that with a 22footer, you would want at least a 150 or better a 200. Fun to dream.
