Re: Boats and Crews
My boat is gonna have open seats for sure this year, so here's the skinny:
My ride is a 23ft Ed Wing cabin model with an off-shore bracket, powered by a 140 Suzuki and a 9.9 Suzuki kicker. I carry 105 gals of gas, which coupled with the thriftiness of that 4-stroke Suzuki should get me out and back with plenty to spare.
I've spent a lot of time fishing salt water, but most of it was off Vancouver Island where there's more current than swells, and you're never very far from the lee side of an island. That does not say it is without adventure and even danger. The ocean is the ocean and we are mere visitors.
I have two GPS's, two radios, and misc safety equipment (no epirb) along with a spare fuel tank in case something contaminates the main tank.
I have been tuna fishing on Popeye's boat and know how to spike and bleed and cark them, but have never put one in my boat. Remember, I didn't get the boat until August of last year and spent the fall getting it outfitted. This year I should be ready from the get-go. I am currently working on a quench tank and have a 1/2 tote for ice and fish storage, along with two 150qt coolers.
My wife rarely lets me take "her" boat out without her, so I will usually have no more than two open seats, but I intend to offer them up for tuna, halibut, salmon, and bottom fish. I get pretty fixated with the big blue in the summertime, so I expect to be out there a lot!
Feel lucky? Wanna go?
Skein

Re: Boats and Crews
Ok, Pilar, I'll jump in... new as tuna captain, but been getting my boat TUNA equiped for two years. 21' Seaswirl Hard Top. 4.3L OMC, Raymarine GPS & Fishfinder, SiTex VHF, CB, Cell phone. 63gal built in, 30 gal in portables. (Thanks again Kurt.)
Need to verify mileage. Ideally fishes three. Need a couple of runs to see how many fish I can haul... expect to stop at about 16-20. Will be fishing both handlines and standup rods.
Fished on other boats last summer to learn how... now it's my turn to share the joy. Made several halibut/salmon runs last couple of years... now need to get MY boat bloody with tuna. Thank GOD it will match the boat's colors.
Tend to run a very safety conscious boat... will only go for tuna as part of the pack and with a wing man who shares my desire for safety.

Re: Boats and Crews
Wannabe tuna captain here. New 2004 25' C-Dory with Honda 130 and 15. All Raymarine electronics. GPS, Radar, Sonar, VHF and Autopilot. 100 gallon gas tank. 80 hours on main motor. Top speed empty = 32 mph. Loaded for tuna = probably about 22. I'll be cruising at less than that.
Went fishing for tuna with Mel 2 times last fall. Was successful on the 2nd try. (thanks again, Mel)
I'm very safety conscious, want to run with knowledgable wingmen that aren't to proud to head back to port when conditions warrant it.

Boats and Crews
The concerns over 'Passenger for Hire' notwithstanding, I'll toss my hat in the ring. As WP said in another thread
Quote:
|
"..56y/o insane skipper that floats around in a small aluminum cork (20') who has good equipment and have been fishing the blue since I got out of High school (last week). Never lost any crew but I have wanted to send a few to visit Davy Jones occasionally."

<font size="2" face="verdana, arial, helv">Dave, my boat is a little smaller than yours but I try to not let that slow me down much.
Basically, I'm looking for people to addict to ocean fishing. One or two trips usually does the trick and some victims have been known to run right out and buy outright or commission the construction of a boat.
BTW, I think the answer to the 'Passenger for Hire' dillemma is to get a 6-pack license and I intend to do just that as soon as I can. Until that happens any considerations for a fishing trip will be discussed amongst the individuals involved before they fish together.

Re: Boats and Crews
I'll be looking to fill any open seat this year. Some of you who have fished with me, know that I will carry my share of the load and fillet everything I can get my hands on as well as sharpen any knives as needed. I will also be taking my boat out when I can wing with someone. I have a 20' Lund Tyee (150 Merc/6 hp Merc, 60 gal tank, GPS,VHF, Compass, cell phone)that will fish three or four for Halibut. I am still marginal about taking it for Tuna! unless I follow a group of Ifishers..I want to learn more!!
Pilar, Skein, Blubeast, TaylorsViewpoint, Fishplay and everyone else, please keep me in mind.

Re: Boats and Crews
24 foot Duckworth Magnum sled with 496 CI, 375 HP main engine and 9.9 kicker. My boat the Duck-n-Out, has a hard top with canvas all the required gear 2 VHF's, 2 GPS's, CB. The tank holds 80 gallons of fuel and I generally pack an additional 10 gallons in spare tanks when I go for halibut. I generally run out of Hammond but go out of Newport for halibut. Tuna have to come close to shore for me to chase them because the boat drinks gasoline at a rapid rate. A spare tank setup is something I need to think about.
This is my second boat, the first was a 19' Deep V Bayliner that was used extensively in the ocean. I have been piloting on the ocean off and on since 1972. I enjoy taking new people on fishing trips and will post open seats when available. My wife goes with me on salmon and bottomfish trips but she doesn't want to go clear out to the chicken ranch for halibut.

Re: Boats and Crews
20 ft Koffler Baybee, 115 HP 4 stroke Merc, 8 HP kicker. Open bow, but Koffler knows how big to make scuppers, it drains fast with 2" holes. 40 gallons built in, 15 more in quick connect containers. 5 mpg ave. gives 180 miles with 1/3 reserve. Garmin chartplotter, Garmin fishfinder, Icom VHF. Ditch bag with handheld GPS and handheld VHF along with extra batteries and flares. Two bilge pumps, adding 2nd battery. Built in fish box holds 7 tuna and some ice (8 if you step on the lid) also carry 1-150 qt. cooler and 1-120 qt cooler. No floatation in the boat since it is over 20' long, if it filled with water it would go down like a giant spoon. I carry a drysuit on TUNA trips. 5 trips for TUNA, average of 10 fish per trip. Caught 1 peanut bluefin last year and I think (HA!) I know how to go after his big brother(or sister). I sometimes have a spot to fill, I only take a total of 3. I like to have at least 1 other person who can run a boat, run a compass heading and follow a gps track. Because if I feel like chumming it helps to have a experienced 1st mate. I fish out of Depoe Bay, Winchester Bay and Coos Bay, and have spots marked at all three. Salmon fishing I prefer to go to Windy Bay, because it is quicker to get there for me. Usually weekends, but if the water is warm and
the winds are calm, find a buddy boat and we will go during the week.

Re: Boats and Crews
Count me in for sure this year...
I have run the big blue out to the CR Buoy many times in the 6+ years I have had my boat...
Last spring I purchased a 225 HP Honda 4-Stroke and hung er on my 23' Pacific Magnum Duckworth with a 17 degree hull... It has a windshield of course & big scuppers up front...
I have a 60 gallon tank but need opinions about that... I think 20 spare gallons should give me plenty of range to get out there & home safely...I have VHS & 2 GPS's with "Americas Blue Charts" loaded on one of them...
Mel, (Miss B Haven) is going to let me play deck hand this summer and this should help...I met Keta as well last summer out of Warranton...
When it comes to Tuna...I am green but feel with the proper tutoring, I can make a good Tuna Boat Captain...
I look forward as we move into the season...
OBTW...I will be going to Venice, Louisiana 3/31 for 2 days of Tuna & Wahoo fishing....This will be a good precurser to what to expect I hope, although those Yellow-Fin can grow larger from my understanding then our Albacore...
Please teach me... I am willing, ready & able...

You can pin me to the hull Ray. That way I can keep a good eye out for the diving birds and won't take up any fish room. Heeeerrreee fisheeeeee fisheeeeeeee fisheeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!
KHH,
What part of Kentucky are you from? I used to spend every other weekend in the Red River Gorge out by Slade. My favorite place in the world. Just too far from the ocean.

Re: Boats and Crews
Hi all,
I'll jump in here.
I've been fishing the Central Oregon Coast area for the past 7 years out of Depoe Bay and Newport. I can run out as far as 45-50 miles for tuna, but generally don't need to go that far.
The Sea Jypzee is a 1989 30' Sport Craft offshore sportfisher. It is equipped with a Hardtop full cabin, and flying bridge. It has twin 350 inboard engines, and cruises comfortably at about 25kts/hr in decent seas. The fuel tank will handle 100gal of gas, and I generally carry an additional 40 gal. for longer full day tuna trips. Offshore refueling from the cans is generally not a problem with the set up I have, and is very safe.
For Tuna fishing, I can comfortably take 3 people to fish, and (again with decent seas) can handle upto 5 handlines and 2-4 stand up lines. The fish hold will handle approximately 600lbs of Tuna along with the prerequisite ice packing below deck and out of the way.
For Salmon, I can comfortably take 4 additional people to fish. Halibut, I've taken up to 6 people plus myself, and limited the boat. Was slightly crowded, but there was no problem with having places to move about. Again, the fish hold can easily accomidate the fish for limits of all above species.
The Sea Jypzee is kept in Depoe Bay, has a Furuno 16nm Radar, GPS, VHF, CB, and Raytheon Depth Sonar, plus I carry a handheld VHF for use on the Flying Bridge. All Standard Coast Guard safety equipment is kept on board as well.

Hi Nancy! You forgot the most important part -
She's an ER Nurse so she's used to blood spraying all over the place, and if you get a barbed hook in your flesh she'll have it ripped out in no time so you can continue fishing!!

Re: Boats and Crews
OK - 28' Maxweld Cat, will be running out of Westport this summer with live anchovies for a little different kind of fun.
Boat equipment: twin Honda 225 OB's, radar, chart plotter, sounder, vhf, epirb, autopilot. Two HUGE built-in insulated fishboxes both plumbed as livewells, transom live bait receiver, downriggers, sw washdown blaster, etc. Tuna tackle to come soon (still have some old stuff from Calif when I was a kid - you guys would laugh) Boat is a tuna virgin but not for long. Any Dogs that want to give the WA live bait scene a try next summer I'll be looking for crew . . .
. . . and hope to meet all at the TA fest tomorrow
Bob

Re: Boats and Crews
My boat is gonna have open seats for sure this year, so here's the skinny:
My ride is a 23ft Ed Wing cabin model with an off-shore bracket, powered by a 140 Suzuki and a 9.9 Honda kicker. I carry 105 gals of gas, which coupled with the thriftiness of that 4-stroke Suzuki should get me out and back with plenty to spare.
I've spent a lot of time fishing salt water, but most of it when I was a kid and a passenger. Got out a few times last summer but not for tuna.
I have two GPS's, two radios, and misc safety equipment (no epirb) along with a spare fuel tank in case something contaminates the main tank.
Remember, I didn't get the boat until August of last year and spent the fall getting it outfitted. This year I should be ready from the get-go.
Feel lucky? Wanna go?

Re: Boats and Crews
Captain Kujo doesn't hold the patent on white knuckle, 40 knot (under ideal conditions, which we experienced twice this year), hardcore whack and stack adventures--my Brutha Ug and I are members of the F.A.V. (that's Fishing Assault Vehicle for the uninitiated ) club too.
Who says size makes all the difference.
My Captain UglyGreen, and our mutual girlfriend of the same name, run offshore in what many have determined-upon first glance, to be a less than longrange worthy vessel. Let me just say--you underestimate us.
19' Almar--28 degree wave busting, slop chopping, dolphin of a hull + offshore bracket (CG calls it 21 feet)with positive flotation (engine head remains out of water under "normal" swamped conditions!)
Yamaha 150 2 stroke, with 8 horse 4 stroke kicker.
2 batteries with isolater.
Automatic 700 GPH Prower Bilge, with a 1500 GPH manual switched Prower as a backup.
FULL Fish Tote  2/3rds filled with shaved ice.
NO SEATS!!! (They are for wimps! ), just the transom!
Lowrance color LCX X-16CI depthfinder and GPS Plotter with 2 handheld backups.
5 watt Icom 40z with remote Mike and 2 handheld backups.
EPIRB (to be installed this spring) Automatic VB 140Z
Flares, first aid kit, extra PFD's (I wear a stearns Coast Guard style jacket, and Ug wears an inflatable horseshoe).
Magnetic compass with handheld backups.
Spare prop, shearpins, plugs, wiring kit with shrinktube--etc etc etc...
She aint real comfy, but she's efficient--and my Captain is a vey efficient predator himself.
I count myself lucky to be first mate on one of the very few FAV's on the Oregon Coast capable of safely fishing both the near (and I do mean near) shore fisheries, as well as far offshore (40 + miles) on occasion, while consistently returning quickly, with a PILE o' meat, and thank God safely.
What Brad and I appreciate most are our Salty Brutha Wingmen (who we gladly wait for! ) that make this sport a relatively safe, and sorta sane endeavour for everybody involved. The ocean is a very big place--the Dogs make it just a little bit smaller--and safer
You all know who you are, and how we feel about you!!
We'll be chatting with you on 78 before you know it!!!
For my Captain UglyGreen, this has been Wildhawg reporting, and saying good night, and salty dreams to all!!!!!!

Re: Boats and Crews
Pilar,
I am still waiting for that ride to Tuna town. Hopefully my schedual will meet yours.
All others,
Able bodied crewman here. Having been trained, (sort of) via internet correspondance courses, by Pilar and the Salty Dog crew I was looking forward to purchasing another boat this winter. Courses include what not to do with a 17' blue boat <snip>, tuna plug selection and rigging, how to set up the tuna spread 102, planer board selection, Big Blue safety - how to ensure you are alive for a second trip, Ocean trip planning, Tuna field care, it goes on and on..... Hence, regarding the boat, plans have changed and I am most likely resigned to waiting another year. That 23'er is just around the corner. I have a GPS and can use it. Know the weather and can predict it. I like easy days but can handle it.
I have some salt experience including a couple of seasons on the CR, many trips out across the Garibaldi bar and a few out of Depot and Newport for salmon, halibut and tuna and looking to fit in on a few rides this spring and summer. I come prepared for the weather and have enough tuna gear including handlines and rods to outfit a boat (Just tell me how much to bring.)
I pay my way and come with Salty Dog references. Inquire with Threemuch, Pilar, Rabalo Bill, Dave Brockway and Puffin .
So Captain! What are you waiting for? Shoot me an email an we can talk about a potential trip. See ya all at the next TA meeting  -
Kevin

Re: Boats and Crews
Getting the "Hinterhoeller" ready for Tuna this year. 1988 24' Hinterhoeller Limestone express with 305 Mercruiser and 9.9 Yamaha kicker. Approx 22mph cruise at ~12gph. 97gal fuel tank with flow meter, VHF, sounder/gps combo and backup handheld GPS, compass, 2 fire extinguishers, halon in motor compartment, 2 water/fuel filters, 2 auto bilge pumps. Still working on rod, ice and fish storage strategies. Have only Tuna fished once with Mel last year, had a great time and now want more of the same. Also hoping to try Halibut. Will be looking for wingmen and might have open seats. Most likely (convenient) launch points are either Garibaldi or Hammond. Also, very willing and able at a moments notice to fill a seat on another ifisher's boat.

Re: Boats and Crews
20 years experience fishing in the oceans of the Altlantic and the Pacific. Bluefish and atlantic cod and some minor harpooning expeditions for Giant bluefin that never panned out. 6 year break while sailing the high seas visiting strange new lands and meeting new cultures (CGN-36 USS California and CVN-72 USS Abraham Lincoln)....seven years here fishing for Halibut from Neah bay to Newport on both private vessels and Charters. Ocean salmon, lings and seabass during the other times. Tuna has been over the last three years and has gotten better as the years progressed.
Have ridden with Threemuch, my initial Tuna teacher, Proud member of Team Pilar and Team Bad Halibut, Fishplay, and Popeye whose boat is a dream to be aboard(Bruce thanks for Taking us out and letting the Hornitos do the talking) Mr Fisherman, And of course my pacific initiator Cap'n Dan.
I have enough salmon gear for 2 or 3 people and Tuna gear for 2
I am available on Fridays and saturdays, with prior arrangemnets I can get any day off I want. usually only 2 days notice needed.
I have a 19 ft jetboat but dont like taking it out in the ocean due to poor ride and very poor gas consumption. but have had it out of garibaldi down to 3 arches and salmon trolling bouy 10 area.
I have a real hankering to try lighter gear and live bait For Tuna!
Remember Don't leave shore without yer baitboy....

Re: Boats and Crews
I plan on hitting the the salt in my new ride this summer. Will have to watch the conditions, but I think I'll be able to sneak out just fine.
I have a 19' smokercraft and am making a bow spray cover and a few other modifications for the ocean. Will have a new kicker ny then too. Will likely fish the CR bouy and newport and depoe bay. I'd be happy to take a crew when I do go. I'll be looking for some mixed bags out there, you can't beat that.
Can't wait.

Re: Boats and Crews
Mel, having only tuna fished with EdSr and Corrirod I might as well have a snowy white image
Their dory boats just werent put together like I would have expected. I was expecting a little more beam, and with their boats being trailerable you probably know they werent all that long
I can get a red dress from Catch and Eat, it might be a little big in the hips but I think I can take it in.
Keta has launched from every port in this state and a few other states, dont believe him when he says the odometer is still sitting at 00000.

Hey, Keta: I think you and I need to go to the Virgin Islands for "recycling" so we can go fishing with Mel and Tom! That should set the odometers back to 00000.0 for us! Isn't virginity a renewable resource?

Re: Boats and Crews
Alert- TUNA VIRGIN -Alert
Salty Pup in need of some more training....
My experience in the salt is this paragraph in a nut shell. Three years skippering my 19 foot inboard jet out into the salt chasing Salmon, bottomfish, and the rare Halibut. Have skippered my boat across the Yaquina Bar fourteen times last year and have skippered my boat across the CR bar about half a dozen. My farthest offshore adventure has been the rock pile. I am limited to the rock pile because of fuel consumption and really don't like the idea of going any farther due to the bumpy ride back to port that usually follows. I do have air ride seats in my sled but nonetheless it can be a kidney kicker.
I have been lucky enough to ride on the Black Rocket on a couple of occasions chasing Halibut and Salmon. The only time I was ever sea sick is was when I was hitting the hard stuff a little too much a couple of hours before playing deck hand to my brother in laws boat chasing Halibut out of Deep Creek but that's another story to be told sipping a barley pop around a campfire.
I have tons of gear and can usually get any day off in the week with a little notice. My goal is to catch a Tuna out of my own boat but unless they come in within 15 or so miles I doubt that my goal will ever get met.
I would love to be added to the Tuna roster but will jump at the chance to go for anything else. I have a strong back and love playing deck hand. I am easy to get along with and have great stories to tell in between fish. I am very handy with a fillet knife and can make boat clean up a fun chore.
If interested please shoot me an e-mail.

Re: Boats and Crews
I better get my name in here before it's to late. Posted on the other thread but this one seems to be the official one.
I have been on the water most of my 47 years, either floating rivers or boating the bigger rivers. Have spent many seasons since I was a youngster out of Wincester, Newport, Pacific City(yes I had a dory for a couple of years)and Tillamook.
I am a proficent boat pilot on most any kind of hull. Have been dragboat racing for 15 years for what it's worth(zoom-zoom-zoom)!
I fish like crazy and love to deckhand, don't get seasick and have had some great rides with some neat Ifishers in the past(you can count on me and I won't be late). Have been out with Popeye and Julie (what great folks) and have been out with Team Bad Halibut.
I am currently having salty withdraws and just buying time with the fresh water stuff(and meeting MORE Ifishers).
I have most all gear I would need and will help with fuel, cleanup or whatever. So count me in!
