Default I have made several scouting trips up the Columbia Gorge (photo)

I have made several scouting trips up the Columbia Gorge and I am finding lots of great looking spots. Using my new navigation unit and Google earth. I have found more than 50 great looking shore spots with current near shore with current breaks. I found a few very good access locations. I have found very good float tube areas too (about 10 to 15 areas). Now I need to test each spot for it’s quality. I will be setting up some float tube fishing-ins at some of the better spots. I may come up with a map of the Columbia River over the next couple years. Also for any one that would like to know the pool above the Bonneville Dam is down a few feet and I am seeing rock piles and stumps I have never seen before. I am also making contacts up river that are sharing there information on the river. I am focusing on summer and pre-spawn areas!

I love fishing the B Pool for smallies too. Man, what a combo of scenery, habitat and fish. The only gripe i have is the relentless winds and how ^#%$# rough it is, often when the fishing is best. Over the years, I have found some nice spots just exploring, and trying to dodge the Tourney hole trail.

The wind is not present on the entire river many times. Some times the Troutdale area has wind that is screaming and Hood river is flat calm. I have seen it calm in Troutdale and howling in Hood River but dead calm in The Dalles. Check the wind for cast on line at weatherUnderground.com (wunderground.com) or (http://www.sailflow.com/windandwhere...0&timeoffset=1).

Oh , i dont let it stop me, but on thoe rare days when it's about 5 mph, it's smallie fisherman heaven. and then there's the other 350 days /yr....my whaler handles it pretty good for a 17' boat, and it can be fun bashing them rollers_just not every time out.
2 yrs ago, May, i landed 3 over 4lbs in one day, my best day ever on the CR. it was so rough i had to anchor in order to work over the spawning beds, and then, w a big anchor with most of 100' of rode. seems like sometimes the rougher the better for the smallies.

do you pick up many walleye in tthe B Pool? i'm sure they are in there, but no luccck so far.

I've caught some really nice fish around Cascade Locks. There are some rock piles and shoals that have all sorts of fish on them.

How true about the wind, its very tricky to judge in the Gorge. I live in Rufus (best bass/walleye fishing on the river) and it could be blowing nasty at the mouth of the Deshutes and dead calm out in front of town. Walleye are starting to bite............bass soon to follow. Happy fishing!
