Default Another Duck Pepperoni or Sausage ??? Steel Shot

Hey all. I hit the lower Columbia this morning and had a great time. Didn't limit in 15 minutes or anything but had a great time for a solo hunt. My 4 year old golden retriever continues to amaze me

I didn't want to highjack the last thread but I really want to know if you take your duck meat to the butcher, do they have metal detectors or do the grinders sift the BB's out of the meat? I have a small handheld metal detector which has been working pretty good but I'm totally worried about biting a steel shot BB. I did it before and about sent me through the roof (and to the dentist). Anyway, let me know about the butcher AND what you do if you process your own meat. Take care everyone. Only how many more months until the next season??? Time to take the blind off the boat and chase steelhead

I take mine to shian meats in oregon city. they do a good job for me and are priced resanable. dont know what others think though, after i clean my birds i wash the breasts with cool water and check for pellets. cant get them all but most of them. then its eat at your own risk, only got one pellet in my time but it did break my tooth, hasnt stopped me from eating it though.

Thanks Duckhunter. I'll check out sausage kitchen since it is in my neck of the woods as well. Anyone know about if commercial processing uses a metal detector??? I had a Bud Light w/ Lime (or more) last night in the name of the passing of the seaon Already thinking of "enhancements" to my boat blind and set-up.

I don't know the answer to your question as to how THEY deal w/ the steel shot issue, but when I make jerky, stirfry or fajita meat I slice it cross grain ~3/16" thick and the shot seems to fall right out during the marinading/stirring process and can be found in the bottom of the bucket or cook kettle.
I don't bother w/ the metal detector anymore, of course the wife selling it in the last yard sale "might" have something to do w/ that.

I've tried 3 different processors and they all do a good job. However because of the volume that they do they aren't able to scan all the meats to remove the pellets. I can recommend a very good Dentist. If you're concerned about damaging your teeth your better off making your own sausage or pepperoni. They do make a scanner to detect metal.

You could make it yourself and use a grinder plate smaller than your shot. And try mikes method to remove shot. Better to break you grinder than your tooth.

What sort of metal detector? From where? How much$$?

At $1000 per tooth crown, it would be a good investment.

I used a cheap kids toy detector made by Coleman that she picked up on clearance at Freddy's for $20.
Don't understand WHY in the HELL she sold it in the yardsale. I only got to use it for one season.
Hunt'nFish

Here it is.....OEM by Coleman from Famous Trails.

I have the Little Wizard metal detector that I've used over the years but have to admit, I'm still nervous about breaking a tooth. Expensive and painful. My technique is to put all meat single layer on a plastic cutting board. I take my rings off my fingers and remove my watch so I don't get a false alarm. I hold the cutting board in the air and scan each piece of meat individually. The reason for holding the cutting board in the air is I was chasing a rogue bb for a half hour before realizing there was a finish nail in the counter holding the front edge molding on. I'm sure there are other nails in the cabinet construction. It has worked very good but I was wondering if I needed to go through this process if I was going to have the meat professionally processed. I guese I do which is fine. It's like most things, if you do it yourself, you will take much more time to ensure it is done right rather than farm it out. I still don't know how to make good sausage/pepperoni so I'll try Ottos or Sausage Kitchen.

My first house was by Ottos. I could hit a baseball to their backdoor. That was a hungry 4 years owning that place. The bbq going on the weekend was torture. Great people and I probably spent enough money on sausage and beer to put their kids through college I'm thinking about making some of the bacon wraped duck breasts stuffed with cream cheese and jalepeno for super bowl. Time for lunch.......

There is a device called a Savertooth which is a handheld metal detector. They are selling it on their site for 18.95. I am going to buy one and try it out.

I cut out every hole with the knife (I clean all my birds with a small pearing knife). It isn't that hard to open up all the holes to make sure there isn't any shot...just time consuming. I've had over 150 pounds put into sausage in the last 4 years and only had one pellet make it through....but, that was the year I used some of my brother-in-laws meat. Frontier Custom Meats in Carlton has the best beer dogs around. They usually have a booth at the Sportsman's Show.
