Mexico Report Days 2&3(pic)
Days 2 and 3 started out with equal optamisum; however, the weather had other ideas. Clouds obscured the sun for most of both days bring cooler temperatures and increased winds. This put chop on top of the 6-8 swells and made for some longs days fishing. Most importantly we noticed that the water temperature had dropped to 80 degrees. The highlight of the two days was one dorado caught by yours truly. Now I had no intention of catching another big fish until my fishing companions had gotten into their share, however, this one was not my fault. I was holding a teaser fly on a floating line with a large fly to try and attract some fish. I was popping this along the surface not paying any real attention when the dorado hooked itself and took me for a ride. After landing it, I sheepishly went back to the front of the boat. My justification that it was not really a very big dorado, after all, brought me no sympathy from my mates. After 9 hours fishing each day with little else to show, save some Jacks and Bonito we retired to the bar, sore from the bumpy ride, but determined to press on.
It’s not so big.
The lowlight of these two days was provided by me. After may hours of trolling for fish we decided to take a break from the rough seas and do some blind casting to the rocks. Almost immediately we picked up a red snapper and had another hook-up that had a lot of strength to it before coming off. This is the point where I come in. I am casting off the back of the boat and stripping in my line to the floor. For a brief second, I make the mistake of not stripping down and make no more then four strips to my left. This puts enough line out of the rear of the boat so that it gets sucked up by the propeller. Luckily, I saw the line an instant before it was picked up by the prop and was able to alert Capt. Troy who quickly cut the motor.
Now, being stuck next to the rocks with a fly line wrapped up in a prop in rough seas is a daunting prediciment. The ocean is a place where one little mistake can lead to disaster. The motor is raised and into the ocean I go to access the situation. The quick response of Capt. Troy shutting off the motor prevented a lot of line from winding its way on the prop. Time being of the essence my first thought was to cut the fly line away, however, I notice that there is a loop trailing off the prop and if I tread water with just my feet I can unwind the line with both hands. After thirty seconds of heart pounding treading I have the line free and am back in the boat. The engine fires and we move away from the rocks. The boat was never in any real danger, as it turns out, as the currents were moving it away from the rocks and not into them. But it could have just as well been the other way around, lucky for us and me. With this “little” mishap behind us, we head to port counting our lucky stars and me taking flack for catching the only big fish and almost sinking the boat, all in a good natured but ever increasing level of hazing.

Bananaman, that 'Little fish' is one fine eating critter. I've been a big fan of the Dorado for years .. .just look at the back of my car. They sure are pretty when they come out of the water. It must have been a rocketship on a fly rod.
Thanks for the reports.

I appreciate the reports. Warm water fly fishing for big game fish is a nice fantasy from January in Portland.
Thanks! and Good Luck!!

Hey BannanaMan - did the Captain tell you about the Hammerhead Sharks before or after you went in the water to clear that line?
We always go for quick dip when we're down there fishing. The Skippers and crew look at you like you just got out of the Insane Asylum though.
Nice report!
Miss B and and Her Insanely Jealous Skipper!

Bannaman where are you? You didn't give us a lot of info on where you were fishing, if you did I missed it, Nice Dorado Great Eating, going to Mexico in April (Mazatlan) for three weeks, but have never thought about Fly fishing for them. Would hate to hook a 300 lb Marlin on Fly line. Don't have the knowledge or experince to land, would be a one way show, with my line. Good luck. Ray
