Default Is this map right?

Is this map showing all major jetties? It just doesn't look right to me. I always thought the jetty at ft. canby faced more north/south rather than east/west? Maybe I need a better map? Maybe I'm just on crack?

Not to give you a hard time, but:

(1) Why on earth would you use a roadmap for navigation? Big no-no.

(2) One uses CHARTS for navigation. Car > road > map. Boat > water > chart.

p.s. / edit - that is, unless your intention is to drive your vehicle onto a jetty. If that is the case, then I apologize for my remarks

Try looking at the chart on Maptech:

You may have to re-center the picture, or zoom in/out, to see whatever it is you're looking for.

Isn't that yellow line suppose to repersent the line between Oregon and Washington??????
Heck even to go buy that river atlas at Englund marine would work.

Hmm, I'm pretty sure the dotted line shows the political boundry between Oregon & Washington. I don't think it has anything to do with the jetty.

The long skinny white finger looks like it is the jetty that you pass when coming out of Ilwaco channel. I can't remember what it is called...Jetty A? That is the orientation of that jetty. It is a good one to watch out for when the tide is ripping, esecially at night.

Your question was, "Is this map showing all major jetties?" The jetty that you refer to as the jetty at Fort Canby would be the South Jetty.

Ok, here is your answers. The map is correct. The yellow dotted line is not the South Jetty, but as stated by others is the States boundry line. The State line in that area runs up into Baker Bay and not straight down the channel.

Now to your question, no, the map is not showing all the jettys. The map is not showing South far enough to see the South jetty. The white point that you think is the North jetty is "Jetty A." Between "A Jetty" and Sand Island is the entrance to the Illwaco channel.

The North jetty is also not shown, it would be off the tip of land at Fort Canby State Park.

Hope that all makes some sense to you.

With all that said, I'm sure you were just looking at this map for fun. As others have said, you need the proper charts to safetly navigate this entrance. This is a bad piece of water, treat it with great respect.

Thanks for the replys everyone! No, I'm not trying to use this road map for river nav. I was trying to see a small beach at the base of the jetty in ft canby. The locals call it Waikiki. It's just past the gaurd shack where you would pay if you were gonna camp. I wanted to try to figure out what swell direction that beach is exposed to, and what is blocked by the jetty. But that jetty in the map I had doesn't look like the right one. It must not be on there. I haven't checked that link mark mc gave yet. That may be the answer I need!

Ok NCK, we will get you dialed in here......!!

Look at the map and find the words "Fort Canby State Park." The one in the small black letters. Now look at that little cove at the end of the word "Park." That is "Waikiki Beach."

As far as protection from the swell, I'm going to say that it is most protected from winds from the West, Northwest, and the North. Anything from the South or Southwest is usually going to blow right in there.

If you are fishing Bouy 10 and there is a hard South blow, you will be pushed right towards the area you are talking about, when you are trying to hold on the line!

Hope that helps,
Jerry

Alright! Now I'm dialed! Cool, thanks! Yes, it looks like everything but S or SW would be blocked by that jetty. I geuss they planned it that way since the WNW are usually the biggies. BTW, in that chart that the link was for, those depths can't be in feet can they? Must be fathoms? Thanks again to all who replyed!

Those depths are in feet. Offshore charts are fathoms, Inside the river depths are in feet. That area is not part of the shipping channel, 25-30 feet is about right.
