Default Turkey Hunting Alert

Attention all turkey hunters. As of Sunday the 25th of Jan. we have only eighty days before opening morning. There are strutting gobblers out there somewhere, and we will find them! So break out the camo and chalk up the calls . Before you know it, it will be here !!

Yep... I thought the exact same thing. I must've read that thing 20 times before I realized it said 80 instead of 8! I must admit, I even went and checked the regs thinking they must've changed something!

Ok so I know my question was a little vague last time. I have turkey hunted a lot back home and haven't gotten to do it out here (the Tillamook area) yet. I havent gone and scouted hard yet but I havent seen birds like I'm used to either. Is there a decent population of them within a reasonable distance of Tillamook and if so where about? I am not asking for your private spot just a idea where to start looking or not looking. Thanks.

Hate to tell ya man, but unless you go to the Eastside, Mt Hood, or at least south of Salem your really not going to see any quantity or "huntable" populations of birds. There might be a few around but the only way your going to find them is by looking, the people that do know about them are going to be very tight lipped. I hope you find something or get lucky and someone feels like sharing!

Yes I hate to tell you this too but Sharpshott is right. There are small groups of birds in quite a few areas but not great numbers of birds and if you find any more than likely they are going to be on private property in front yards and fields and they will be well protected. These local populations of birds people treat like pets. l7 to l8 years ago when they started releasing birds on the west side, I had pretty much located every group they had released. You can find birds around Tillamook, North Fork Nehalem, Nestucca, Jewel Mist, Timber, Buxton, Vernonia, Manning, north and south of Hillsboro. Shooting a turkey and hunting turkeys are two different things. Anyone who has hunted turkeys for any length of time realizes the fun is in the pursuit , calling and the chess game that goes with it. There are great numbers of birds in eastern Oregon, central Oregon and southern Oregon where you can pursue them wily birds to your heart's content.

Thanks, that is why I have assumed. Back home we have turkeys all over and see them on a daily basis but i was holding out hope that maybe just maybe I could get into some birds around here. I think so far in two years we have seen 2 turkeys and they were in somones yard and not in a area where you can get up behind the house and call the bird out of the yard either.

There are no birds in the white river area, they have all been relocated to salem area. so i would not waste my time and gas going to white river

The big problem with hunting over there is that everyone in portland who thinks they can kill a turkey goes over there and educates the birds. These guys call to them before the season or they go over during youth weekend and screw up hunts that are taking place over there with the kids. this happen to us last year. i know that it is public ground and everyone has the right to be there either hunting our scouting, but when you start calling from the road as you are parked right next to my truck and you can hear me working a bird it is not cool to just start blowing on your crow call for twenty minutes trying to keep the bird gobblin. A lot of hunters who are new to the sport just do not understand the hunter respect. So if you are new to turkey hunting and want to learn the right way to hunt them come to my seminar at a clackamass store on the 21st of march at 1200 - 2:00pm I will cover everything from scouting to vocab. I will also talk about hunter set ups. it is free and there will be an amature and youth contest after the seminar. come on out, i look foward to meeting some of you.

I have a question for you guys. I have taken a few birds before while I was scouting and just happened to come across them in season. I would really like to learn the ropes about Turkey Hunting. Is there anyone out there who would be nice enough to teach a fellow Hunter. I am 27 and live in Beaverton.

Looks like I'll be scratching the itch a couple weeks early as I head to California to chase turkeys and pigs. Got an invite out of the blue on Thursday, couldnt say no. I'm excited to try out the new Mountain Magnum calls on some pesky toms and hopefully the new DSD jake decoy... we'll see.

Soooo many turkeys this year! There has been a group of about 70 hanging around my dad's house this year and that's only with a couple jakes. The big boys are just starting to show up and do some gobbling. BTW, we don't hunt his yard birds. It seems they just about double in numbers in the good years.

Went for a drive over the weekend and saw literally hundreds of Turkeys from Dayton back to walla walla and then headed to pendleton back. They are everywhere this year! Got a bunch of video but not sure how to post it. I'll work on it.

You will have to look some place east of hebo for birds . The only birds in Tillamook county are on private property and most are considered pets . I personaly hunt in the newburg area .
