Re: elk tents
we use a 12x14 wall tent. there use to be 4 of use that went. now there is 3. when we slept on foam rubber it wasnt bad, tight but we managed. now we have cots and there is no room. we borrowed a 16x20 and we loved it, had plenty of room and could cook in there to. we are looking for one that size now. With the 12x14 we had a ridge pole and wood poles on the outside. The big tent had a inside frame and was much easier to set up. The inside frame also seemed to not let the tent sag.
So to answer your question if you think one size would work go with the next one up and go with a inside frame.

Re: elk tents
I have a 15x18. There's just enough room for 3 comfortably. I have the inside frame, a buddy has the outside frame. I prefer the inside as it holds up better in the wind. With 3 it's also roomy enough to cook inside.

Re: elk tents
We have a Canvas Cabin, very nice tent, and one of the better prices around. (still not cheap) We have the external frame, works fine, but wish we had paid the extra $$ and bought the internal, a little easier to put up. here is a link http://www.canvascabins.com/

Re: elk tents
Two years ago we did the same manuver, went with quicker and lighter tent. We choose Bussards (Spelling?) in Albany. I have a short box pickup and I wanted to be able to haul it around, so we liked thier five foot increment design. The 15X15 uses a bunch of 5' poles of course. For the ridges the couplers are strong and don't slip - using small piece of beaver tape (some call it duct tape) - so a 5' foot pole a couple and a 3'7" or so can't remember the exact lenght.
[/PHP]This past elk season we had hard rain for a couple of days and experienced no leaks.
This past year added a 5' extension to the tent as we had four hunters.
Lots of good tents out there. Nothing better than a wall tent.
Check them out at the Sportsmans show.

Re: elk tents
Beckel makes a great smaller tent called the EE tent it is perfect for 3 and light weight and you can add a stove. You can set it up by your self it only weighs about 40 lbs. 14x14 with 45 foot side walls we have used our for 3 seasons now and it is great won't break the bank at around 700. Might check it out at the sportsman show. This is a canvas tent not nylon.

Re: elk tents
tent length is the important number, if i was looking for a new wall tent, i would go 12'x20' or 12'x24'. i might also buy 2 tents, 1- 10'x12' for kitchen and solo use with both ends with complete entrys. then an 12'x18' for sleeping, with wood stove jacks in both tents. my current tent is 12'x14' a 12'x18' would be bare minimum for 3 hunters wood stove and cooking inside tent

Re: elk tents
I have a 12x15 with a 6' porch. This is a great setup for three guys. But everyone has to have all there stuff in order. If I had it to do again i would go with the 21x15 like bowkill I have camped in his tent and it was awesome for four guys. Again I cant stress this enough you have to be organized!!!! Bravo mfg. makes the best wall tent ive seen in my opinion.

Re: elk tents
I have a 14x16 Davis. Very comfortable for 3 people with the wood stove setup. 4 people works good in warm weather without the woodstove. Its a little tighter if you cook in the tent. I built a 8' covered awning for the cook area.
Tent hangs better with Inside Poles and they are a little easier to set up. In snow conditions - Outside slough snow better and can be made lighter/easier on a pack hunt.

Re: elk tents
I've used a 16x20x5 since 1993. Perfect for 4 if you want to cook in it, but we've had 7 in there with the dining fly setup. Another great space saving thing for us has been to leave the wood stove in the utility trailer as a backup, and use 2 or 3 Mr. Heaters instead. I always tarp my tent to help keep it dry, and make sure to dry it good when I get home. The internal frame is the only way to go in my opinion. Much easier and quicker to setup.

Re: elk tents
Bravo all the way! Researced them all and came back to Bravo, I have a 12x15 and also purchased the cook shack for cooking without freezing to death, its a 9x12, awesome setup! Slept 3 with all the cook gear and stove in Idaho, no problems except getting out of bed when the alarm goes off................

Re: elk tents
Inside frames give one a place to hang up wet clothes by the stove. Cots make room disappear but well worth it, we keep everything in plastic rubbermaid boxes that fit under the cots to help keep things out of the way and dry. Stove pipe out the side, not the door.

Re: elk tents
We have a 14x16 Davis tent. stove out the side wall. Spacious with room to spare with 2 people, great for 3 , snug with 4 and very snug (sardines) with 5. I think it's the perfect size for what we do with it. Nice to have internal frame to hang wet clothes on for drying. The Sportsmans show is coming up soon , have fun shopping and dickering.
