Default Countdown to TUNA

OK- this is the official Countdown Calendar thread. I'm unilaterally declaring July 1 to be the official start of the 2004 TUNA season. We have to wait and see what the Tuna have to say about that.

Popeye/Skein/UG and the rest of you who are flying South this winter for the Yellow Fins etc don't get to play!

Jan 14th- 24 weeks, 168 days left to go. Hey-that's 2 weeks less than 6 mths right? Oh- I guess it's only been ~3 mths since last season ended huh? :depressed:

Anywho...I need this, tells me how long I can procrastinate on getting the boat fixed and ready to go West.

I'm about ready to start e-baying, now all I need is a boat.
I did get my Tuna gear out of the garage the other night though.
I,m buying new line for my reels.
My wife is shopping for new carpet for the salon.
I'm trying to get my credit cards clean so I can start buying fuel.
When does it all  stop?

Tom- I saw a 38 ft 1984 Uniflight SF, twin 6-71's for sale in Sea Mag latest issue. Only 129K...maybe you can get a backup boat (identical twins no less)! I'll bet that would make $$$Al and Warrenton BW happy!

BTW- it all stops as soon as we start.... Tuna fishing that is.... July 1st!

Mel - you will not procrastinate! You know what happens when you do that!

The albies will be here before July 1, but we probably won't be welcome to hunt them much before that.

My prediction for first albie caught off Oregon in 2004 - June 26

That's what I had in my old boat, twin J&T671n's.

There is no finer marine engine made . , end of report.

Did need to replace a starter motor once, that's not too fun.

Other than a little more HP, I'd love to have those again.

I am sure to loose plenty of sleep in June studying weather patterns and SSTs.....

First OR sport tuna of 2003 was by Marty, out of Depoe Bay, on June 20. The commercial guys were already catching them for at least a week, something like 30-40 miles outside of Heceta Banks.

http://www.ifish.net/cgi-local/ultim...;f=21;t=001830

"Pictures are always better than words!!!!...........but lets set the story straight, it was 5 tuna and not 6. BUT they were 'the kind' and they were caught about 24 miles almost straight off of Depoe. Numbers were 44 56.77 & 124 36.98 to another triple hook up at 44 55.98 & 124 39.02. There were NO signs at all except a temp break from 58.1 to 58.4. We had caught tuna in this area last year so we 'released the hounds' (put the jigs out) and didn't get them all out when the fishtrap went off. Got that tuna in the boat, and with the decks still bloody, we put everything back in the water and 5 minutes later a triple......and then the scramble really started with everyone yelling orders at the same time with three people pulling on fish with still two rods in the water. Most of you know what I mean as words can never quite give you the big picture of this kind of enjoyable mayhem. We ended up only landing 1 of the 3. Then we had a double, and then another double (lost one), and 15 minutes later the last one on that same fishtrap. Three on fishtraps (channel island chovie), one a zuchini and one on a mexican flag. This entire process took us about 40 minutes and while I was still just smiling that inner glow of fulfillment, my two partners started talking about halibut, as after all I invited them for halibut fishing and not tuna. So we ran 12 miles to the compass rose area and fished for 4 hours for nothing but a blue shark and small flounder. I couldn't take the 800 foot grind any longer and told the crew we were tuna bound again. Headed back out to the numbers and things had changed and we never got another take-down. Talked to Pilar on the VHF and he was fishing outside of us when I let him know we had fish. He came inside and saw some jumpers and that was the last I talked with him. I hope he stacked the boat with fish because I ran in shortly after our talk and I got out of range. Came back into Depoe and put the downriggers out for a short troll and landed a nice 20 lb. chinook. This all happened on Thursday and today I talked to Terry on the "Serious Fun" and he said they limited on halibut at the chicken ranch and headed out another 10 miles west and got 3 tuna today. So there are a few out there, but not in the numbers they will be shortly.

The true moral of the above story is NEVER LEAVE FISH TO FIND FISH!!!!!

No halibut for me, but I am stoked about these early fish and after the barbecue this evening I will be even more content.

Depoe Dan.......thanks for the pics and the thread.

Marty"

OK Jen, since you're doing so well on predictions, when will Ocean Blue hook her first tuna of 2004? And for extra credit, what color will the pole be?

Kentucky Hog Hunter,

So you've been to Venice, Louisana huh?? Didn't think many folks have been there. During the winter months, I work for CoMar out of Morgan City and I have operated many boats out of Venice. Been in and out through Tiger Pass, South Pass and South West Pass so many times I can do it in my sleep. Never had much chance to fish out of there though but I can tell you from what I've seen that it has to be fantastic!

KHH

Spent quite a bit of time in Lake Charles, and Morgan City back when I was a tramp electrician in the 70's. There was so much work there that there were help wanted signs on all the phone poles. I loved it there, Cajun people and cajun food are the best.

By then I hope to have the second 30' BLACK ROCKET coming off the production line and running a "ROCKET PACK" Yes 2 30 footers and a 25 footer built for TUNA SLAYING

Yes .... 3 boats in a pack just rippen TUNA and communicating with each other. I hope We can count on some "Salty Dogs" to "pack up with us".

That's room for 14 customers on 3 boats. Love to have 14 SALTY DOGS. If the TUNA season is HOT  I'm going to run a "SALTY DOG MEMBERS ONLY DAY" at a discounted price.

Please you guys...Don't get me started on this TUNA thing soooo early, I've really been showing some good self control until this post.

KHH, I worked on an oil rig 40 miles off Venice when I got out of high school. Made enough slinging pipe in one summer to pay for a year of college, flunk out, and then got myself to Hawaii and Guam surfing. Guy could make a little dough go a long way back then. The oil rig was just surrounded by all kinds of fish but we had to work 12 to 16 hours days and the only guy who had time to fish was the electrican. Can't wait to hear your report when you get back.

Count me in for sure this year...

I have run the big blue out to the CR Buoy many times in the 6+ years I have had my boat...

Last spring I purchased a 225 HP Honda 4-Stroke and hung er on my 23' Pacific Magnum Duckworth with a 17 degree hull... It has a windshield of course & big scuppers up front...

I have a 60 gallon tank but need opinions about that... I think 20 spare gallons should give me plenty of range to get out there & home safely...I have VHS & 2 GPS's with "Americas Blue Charts" loaded on one of them...

Mel, (Miss B Haven) is going to let me play deck hand this summer and this should help...I met Keta as well last summer out of Warranton...

When it comes to Tuna...I am green but feel with the proper tutoring, I can make a good Tuna Boat Captain...

I look forward as we move into the season...

8Knots, Kenai, ATC - The trip to Venice is looming. My buddy from Dallas sends me daily updates from Captain Scott's website...I looks like it is shaping up to be one great trip...Can't wait to get back to the southeast...It will remind me of my time I spent in Central Florida on the east coast from 89 to 91. Love that warm water fishing....

Please teach me oh ye of Tuna Fishing Wisdom... I am willing, ready & able...

Hey John- I said July 1st was the "official" start. Nothing in my rulebook that says we can't have a pre-season game now is there? Just a matter of when the other team shows up to play right! Com'on El Nino! (Sorry Salmon Guys)

Oh- 155 1/2 days now (and counting).

Maybe some good news on Miss B too! Looks like the Coastal(postal? ) mechanic was wrong. Doesn't seem to be anything wrong with my valves (leakdown test) so no head pull at this point. Looks like a fuel injector/timing issue causing my miss at low speed. ONLY a few boat bucks to fix and Idon't have to cut the floor out (I'm crossing my fingers as I write this). I just hope the Tuna stil llike Miss B when she's firing on all 12 cylinders!
That's what I was doing Saturday instead of Sturg fishing or going to the TA meeting!

Hey Mel - I saw Tom wandering around the dock yesterday - I was going to walk down and say "Hi", but it was pouring as I drove by.

Troy and I are planning on trailering my boat down to Crescent City over the 4th of July weekend - so definately the other team should show up to play down there by then - don't you think?

If pre season for TUNA! is anything like the pre-game show for football, I'd say...... last weekend?

Mel, I'm planning on fishing the commercial salmon opener, March 15th down in Coos Bay or Port Orford, I'll let you know when they start getting close!

Ray, the inside 40 fathom halibut fishery starts May first. So if you include that, it's about 83 days 'till halibut. But who's counting...

Start with full fuel cells. Measure the distance traveled and the motor run time. with a short run, say 10 to 20 mile round trip or do the round trip to Bonneville on the Columbia. Refill the tanks and calculate hours and miles per gallon. This will be used as your best case estimate. Make sure to reserve 1/3 of your fuel for the proverbial "what if" i.e. what if conditions get worse... What if the bar is closed when you try to return... What if the fishing is too good to leave.. (leave anyway) Never jeopardize the safety of your vessel or crew for fish.

Know what to expect from your boat before you go.

Mark, The dates I used for Halibut are the forecasted All Depth dates. We can ALWAYS add another fishing day to the list or change the dates as they are approved in March...

I made an Excel spread sheet that counts them down

WP, you just reminded me of an old poster from the 70's...with the 2 vultures sitting on the tree branch in the desert...and one says to the other:

"patience my @SS, I'm gonna kill something."

Anyone remember that one?
