Default Yamaha or Honda

Just looking for some more help from all the dogs out there. After shopping at the boat show and talking with several dealers, I am still up in the air about which engine to re-power my boat. I am gong with a 150 HP 4 stroke and both Honda and Yamaha are about the same price. Yamaha is offering a 5 year warrenty top to bottom and Honda is 3 year.
One of my decision makers is going to be the service end of the deal. I spoke with a dealer out of Oregon City and they seem very knowledgeable. Spoke with another in Scappose and ???? but a good price. Am waiting for a price out of Vancouver and have dealt with those folks before. A freind recommended a dealer in Tillamook who I have never even talked with but will call.
Am looking for everyone's two cents worth on both the motor and dealer experience. Any input is greatly appreciated.

Kevin

Both are good motors. I love my Hondas(115/9.9 4 strokes), but would probably have an good things to say about a Yami if I had one. Check the weights of the two motors. Mine is heavier than a comparable Yami.

Service is a good consideration, but I would think no sales tax in Oregon would be a bigger thing.

The war of the rice burners. Both are very good. Sales tax should be a consideration, weight and warranty. I don't believe you could go wrong with either one.

Sales tax is not an issue if you buy up in vancouver (even if you just go to buy oil). Tehy have excellent service and carry both brands and know just as much info on both. Just talk to the guys in the back (mechanics) they really know there stuff.

I hear Suzuki makes a very nice 140hp 4stroke. I believe it is much lighter than the 150 Honda/Yamaha..Cheaper too

There is this same thread awhile back you may want to check it out. I own two Yamahas a 250 1998 400 hours and a 150 1989 1050 hours, both are two strokes. I love them. I have almost zero troubles. Good sevice is what to look for. If you want to save a few grand buy your moter from This outfit and have it shiped to your dealer of chioce and have them install it.http://www.boats.net/ The freight is about 300$ the saving is a couple grand. The yamis warrenty is better from this out of state seller but they do ship hondas as well.Go for the Yamaha I would. It is my only moter for life. Mark

I just went through this same delima.
Don't just shop motors, shop motors installed. The Yamaha was $3000 more when the controls were figured in.
Me, well I bough a Suzuki and I have been pleased as punch.
I agree with what was said earlier, do a search on this topic. Lots of good information.
Also, lok for Skeins reply. He has a 140 Suzuki on his 26' Aluminum boat.
Gotta love that electronic ignition and tuned port fuel injection imvho...

Appreciate all your input and help on this subject Sales tax is not an issue as I am an Oregon resident. The prices I have on both engines are within $500 with controls installed. So service becomes a little bigger issue.
I looked at the Suzuki and it is a fine engine, but the salesperson strongly recommended the civic on the stick. I would buy the Honday today except that Yamaha is offering the 5 year warranty and you have to give that some consideration. It is a real toss up as both are great engines and both have preformed extremely well. Hopefully, the dogs reading this can give me a little ideas about the dealers or share some knowledge.
I spoke with Skein at the X-mas party and he likes his new Suzie well but has had it only a short time.
Again, I appreciate all your fine thoughts and this is really great place to learn.

You should do your own research etc. Remember, most sales people are paid on commission. Many times there are "spiffs" paid out by the manufacturers to push their product. I am sure there are high margins in marine engines, so these spiffs could be a substantial part of the salespersons income. I dont think you could go wrong with either of the motors however

Both motors are quality and will provide great performance and service. I've owned 4 Hondas since '86 with no problems, ever. I purchased our last, 90hp that we put on our 17ft whaler that is like a dream. Talk to Greg's in Garibaldi. He was $2.000 less than everyone else installed and the service has been exellent. You'll probably get 20 hard years on either motor, so the warranty probably won't be a big issue. You'll love the 6-8 miles per gallon at crusing speed and the QUIET! Enjoy,
Jean

Has anyone gotten a new motor from Canada (eg. Vancouver, BC). These are supposedly tax and duty free if you drive in and out, and supposedly discounted.
Any downsides of buying from Canada?

thanks

And to have a warranty at all it must be installed by a certified DEALER.

I spend a fair amount of time at boat show talking with dealers /reps etc. about the 150's and came up with no solutions other than any of the three would be a good choice. I think what I learned was:
Yamaha might be a little faster, Honda a little quieter, Suzuki a little less money. (so of course I was then comparing the 200 Suzuki to the other 2 since price is about same)
I decided on the Yamaha because that's what I had before and the dealer I am working with leans that way as well. ..........In other words, one is blue one is black and one is gold - that's all I know.

Hey all you dogs, thanks for your input. I have pretty much decided on the Yamie due to the warranty of 5 years. Seajay what location is your dealer in. I have asked more than one for a price installed on the 150 and have yet to get a firm $$ amount. Still waiting for a couple more responses but seems a week should be enough time.
Again, appreciate all your ideas and input

Guess if I could figure out how this reply system works, I could figure out which engine to buy.

My dealer is in Vancouver - mentioned above by a few others - Pacific Boatland.
