Default Toxins in Farmed Salmon: Journal Link

Here is the link to the article on toxins in farmed salmon, from the journal Science

http://www.sciencemag.org/cgi/content/full/303/5655/226

and a related commentary:

http://www.sciencemag.org/cgi/conten.../303/5655/154a

An interesting tidbit:

- PCB concentrations were highest from European fish farms. They believe this is related to Europe having the earliest industrialization, hence a higher occurence of PCBs (and other persistent chemicals) in the environment, which then accumulates in the forage fish used for feed.

- the EPA and the FDA have two different standards on limits of PCBs in food.

If you don't eat anything, at least you won't die from cancer. Of course your remaining lifespan might be considerably shorter!

I think the article in the Oregonian today recommended eating farmed salmon no more than once a month. Now, that is fine with me because I don't ever eat it at all, but what got me was they recommended eating wild chinook only twice a month due to the presence of the same toxins. Sheeeesh, what the heck can we eat?????
