Default Boat paint for wood boat?

I am going to repaint my wood boat (16' Burchcraft) and had a few questions for anyone that might know.
I am going to paint the bottom but it doesn't stay in the water so an anti-fouling bottom paint is not necessary. I have looked at the paints at West Marine and am not satisfied with the color selections. (I know I know it's not a fashion show out there.) Still I would like to see more than one color of green.
Does anyone know where one might find a source for marine grade paint that has a broad range of colors or custom color mixing?
Here is the boat now. I currently have it flipped over and am removing the keel to seal it and then repaint the bottom and revarnish the wood.

Right
Petit Easypoxy has two different colors of green. Not exactly a huge variety but better than Interlux. Anyone else have a suggestion?

Talk to your local rodda paints or sherwin williams store. they may be able to tone the color to something you would like more.

I am not sure if the pigments they use in marine paints are the same as in enamel but they would know at the paint stores if it can be done.

if they can do it then you can purchase a white or nuetral color and have it mixed to what ever color your heart desires.

you can also contact the manufacturer of the paint that you are going to use and see if they can create a color to match a color that you choose from a paint chip card.

you might also try looking at kirby paint. from what i've heard there color selection is quite good. I've never used it but, many a wooden boat fanatic has used it and like there paint and from what i've heard it comes in several colors.
I just recently used petit easy poxy paint in the jade green color and like the color very much. A nice dark green. I would recomend using a primer, also availiable through petit. I would also suggest that if you have access to a paint sprayer to use it. You get more of an even coat. I tried brushing it on in a couple spots was disapointed in the results.
Although, i've heard that kirby paint brushes on a lot nicer than the easypoxy does.
Good luck in your painting.

System Three Linear Polyurethane. Lots of colors, at least when I looked some years back. Very durable. Very expensive.

I used Ultra Lux paint on the Duds Plug after sanding the hull down to bare wood. You can buy it down at Haden Island from Sextans and it comes in many colors. They also have an epoxies version if you want to go the the trouble. I used a spray gun instead of a brush and it came out looking really good.

If I had it to do all over again, Like I will this summer this is what I would do. Assuming you are going to sand it down to bare wood. Don't use the Ultra Lux primer. Call the Rot Doctor in Seattle and buy a Half Gallon of CPES and use is as the primer instead of the UltraLux Primer. You will get a better bond and the paint job will last longer.

If you aren't going to sand to bare wood then I would use Ultralux. It sells for about $20.00 per quart. If you want any more help send me a PM. The Rot Doctor has a product line for anything
wood. If you need to seal a leak or fill a hole, you won't find anything better then CPES. I aint cheap but it is the best thing out there.

The Duds Plug sunk the first time I launched it after painting it. I sealed all the leaks and did all the repairs using CPES and now it doesn't leak a drop of water. It is amazing stuff.

I've used Pettit Easypoxy on my antique and don't plan on changing.

GREEN is made of BLUE and YELLOW. You could buy a quart of each and customize. Remember the paint will look darker after it dries.

Actually: I am a member of the Wooden boat club in Portland and I have seen people using Miller house paint on their boats. It used to be you paid a premium price for boat paint but I believe these days all the paints are good enough quality that they will just as long a time on a boat or any place else. You can get a better looking finish using a spray gun. Harbor frieght has spray guns for around Fifty Bucks.

Good luck

since people are mentioning spray guns, have a look at the grizzly catalog or web site. They have an hvlp sprayer for about $30. I bought one and used it. It's a great sprayer and doesn't create as much overspray as a typicial sprayer does.
I've also heard of people useing house paint with good results too. Another option that might be worth looking into.

and I know a guy that uses Auto paint for his wood boat. It lasts a long time, longer then regular paint.
