Default Boat and Motor Recommendation

I am looking to purchase a new boat in the next few weeks and I am primarily looking to use it in the Columbia and possibly offshore as I get more comfort with the open sea. I have come to 2 selections that I think are best and I'm looking for any recommendations. The first choice is the Duckworth 19' Advantage with the offshore plate. The other is the NorthRiver Seahawk somewhere between 19'-21'. Both come with a Yamaha 115HP outboard. I believe that may be under powered and am considering more HP. Please let me know what you think and what are the options that I should consider and why. I appreciate your advice.

both of those boats sound great I would go with more length over more horse... Props are very different in their handling characteristics as I found out with my jet boat...
a 115 prop will push a 21 ft boat around 35 mph would be my guess... I would only be leery of that HP if I was fully loaded or going beyond the ratings of yer boat.

a 21 ft . Seahawk is fairly heavy. Actual weight is 23oo lbs.I think. My boat is 1500. I have a 150 on it and it will go almost 50 with two guys at sea level. My best friend just bought a 21 ft . Seahawk ,he put a 225 on it .More power than he needs, probably .
Personally I may think about a bit more motor if you go with the seahawk 20 or 21 fter. I dont know about the Duckworth. You may be just right with the 19 ft. id. p.

I have a 22 foot alumaweld formula vee with offshore bracket mounted with a 200 merc. It is plenty fast moves about 50mph. I never get to go that fast the saltwater is allways way to rough and waists to much gas about 21 gallons hour at that speed. Slow it down to 35mph and the gas drops to about 9 gallons per hour. Beside the rift raft and stuff you need to dodge come at you way to fast at that speed to miss all of it.

I've got a 21ft Duckworth Pacific Silverwing with an offshore bracket. It is powered by a Yam 200hp. I would say you would not be happy with a 115 on those boats. It's not really about speed either. You'll cruise and plane your boat at alot less RPM's with a larger motor. You will burn a little more fuel however jumping from a 4 to 6 cylinder motor.

Thanks to everyone with all the helpful tips. Here is a list of options that I am considering. Please let me know if they are worth paying for or a waste of money. Also, if I'm missing something please let me know. Portside wiper, washdown, offshore plate, fish cleaning plate, air ride seats, dual axle trailer, 15HP kicker with electric and pull start, dual batteries.
Thanks again.

A couple thoughts. I have a 19' Duckworth Advantage and have been out to the Rockpile in moderate conditions.

The "V" on the hull is uncomfortable for rough conditions I have encountered on the ocean or Buoy 10 for that matter. I have the 115 Yamaha and it does great for a 19' boat. I can get into the upper 30's, low 40's in good conditions and the fuel economy makes tuna an option if the conditions are good.

I would go for the deepest V possible, and also go with the Sharkhide finish from the beginning. I ran my boat 3 times in Astoria, and washed it after each use. I noticed discoloration right away.

I was out to the rock pile in great conditions in a 20' Hewes Sea Runner with a 115hp, and the difference was noticeable as they have a deeper V.

Good luck either way!!

Hopefully, the fish you'll be catching here will be too big for the fish cleaning plate!

That second axle adds a bunch of weight to your trailer. Find out how much weight you will save if you go with single axle and a spare.

Good luck and hope to see you on the briny soon.

Hi,

I am a professional marine technician and in my professinal opinion Mercury is the best outboard you can buy I would trust no other with my life or that of my family. Just for your amusement I will make a list of outboards and what I have found to be the best.
1. Mercury
2. Suzuki Yea you read right I hate to admit that one.
3. Johnson/Evinrude not 98 or 99 models
4. Yamaha
5. Honda 4
6. Nissan/Tohatsu
7. Mercury Force
8. Chrysler Force
9. U.S Marine Force

Didn't Merc have problems with the large hp Optimax? I've read reports with people having problems with over heating if I remember right. My mechanic loves Yamahas.

I have a 2003 22 ft North River Seahawk with offshore bracket, 225 Yamaha 4s, 15hp. yamaha 4s,.

This boat works extremely well and couldn't be more happy with it. The NR seahawks use 1/4" aluminum bottom and sides, and are wider than the 20 footers. Therefore they are heavier. However, they ride and track fantastically. The only thing about the offshore bracket is that with #650 pounds of combined motors, it doesn't hold it's plane under 12mph. Now, that is actually a good thing in waves, however it would be nice to clip along at 10mph on ovccasion wityh the bow lower. You probably wouldn't have this without the offshore bracket, and, If you buy the 21 footer, the 150 Yamaha would be perfect.

Yes to port wiper, +/- on washdown pump, I'm not interested on spraying salt water inside my boat.

Air ride seats....they come standard with the seahawk....these pedestal versions work just fine, and no rust problems, and more room for tackle boxes etc....Those fancy suspension seats for $800 apiece an my mind are more of a luxury.

Absolutely on dual batts

love my offshore bracket....tons of room

Kicker is nice,15 moves my 22 footer 8mph full out

hope this helps,

Kurt

If you fish you want a wash down pump. what are you going to do with all the blood? I guess you could carry 100 gal. of fresh water just to rinse the blood.I dont think so!just my opinon.

Gimme doesn't saltwater get into your boat when you fish offshore? No scuppers?

I'd get the wash down pump. Beats a 5 gallon bucket. Just make sure your bilge pump works if you don't have scuppers. I'd nix any wipers in a saltwater enviornment and go with rain ex. Although I don't live in a rainy area more often than not we take a lot of spray and rain ex does a great job.
Those seats on shocks look pretty cool and if they work I'd be all in favor of them. Nothing like bouncing off ones own cajones when taking a beating. Or landing on them for that matter.

Try Bonine for seasickness. Use it before you go to bed the night before. One pill only. Never gotten sick.

Thanks to everyone for their advice. It has helped tremendously. I bit the bullet and went with the North River Seahawk 21' w/Yamaha 150HP and Yamaha 8HP High Thrust(suppose to push as well as a 15HP, we'll see). Went with the 2nd wiper, air ride seats, dual batteries, dual bilge pumps and a few other minor upgrades. I can't wait for the maiden voyage. We'll see you on the deep blue seas.

Yes, saltwater gets in the boat. Bucket works for me....simplicity favored for me regarding washdown pumps.

Bonine makes me sick....been there, done that....I'm getting it figured out though....

Congrats on your NR!....You'll love it...
