Default Antenna Help

I was wondering if anyone could help, I had wanted to move my antenna up to the radar arch but I kept hearing if it aint broke dont fix it. But now it is broke. I had a 8' Shakespeare VHF antenna it worked really well, so I was curious if there was a better one for the money or what to look for when buying, Thanks for all your help.

Damn Power Lines in Warrenton anyways!!!

Sure - I break one off each year on a power line. I use the Shakespere Galaxy X225 - seems to be good for the $$ - about $100. I know Jensen sells one they like alot better - about $225 - they keep trying to sell me that one. You can always borrow my meter when you get it installed to test it.

Ya I know about the one at Jensens they have tried selling me that one over and over.
I was hoping for the offer to use the meter..Ha Ha so if I buy the beer is that good enough pay off?

So power lines get you also ehh? I figured how fast you go, your antennas would be bent straight back anyways...

How did your reels turn out Dean?

Actually, he didn't work on them. I just picked them up and did them on my own. I ordered parts from the sponsor listed above - penn parts. They were in very good shape, however. A little wear on the metal drag washer. I also cleaned all the salt off them. I ordered new drags, a couple of bearings (one has a slight sound to it), etc. So.. He just said he was too busy. The Penn's are pretty easy to work on.

You keep mentioning beer - I was downtown this evening and didn't see you around??

I'm in the annual antenna replacement club as well. Sometimes even bi-annually!

I buy the cheap ones for that very reason and have never noticed a difference or had trouble sending/receiving calls but maybe they're worth the extra dough?

Troy,

Where did you find the power lines in Warrenton?
Didn't think there were any over by the SloJo.
My outriggers get pretty close some time on a high tide. Scares the heck out of Bobbie ya know.

Well Tom I am on the opposite side of the Dock as Slo Jo wich is the side the powerlines run down the dock, we have had some pretty high tides as of late so hi the my bow railing just about hit them as we docked last time (about 3'about actually). If you need the house number to get ahold of me Saturday just call my work phone and I will give it to you.

Thanks for your replies.

Corrirod - I contemplated that as well - buying the lowest cost (I think they can be had for about $40). But I keep trying to convince myself that I will do better

I had some difficulty recieving last year, so I have the gold connectors on the shelf ready to install, bought a meter, etc. What antenna do you use?

I can't remember the model #. I think the last one I broke was $100 unit and I only had it on for 2 trips before I decided to shave off the top 2 ft!

I think the one I have now was like $55.

Dave,

Do you recall the brand and model - although even the model will do. I'm assuming it's standard 8' height - single piece?

Dave, thanks for your reply,if you do run across more info on the brand etc. That would be great, I can't read what the number of my old Shakespeare was but in all honesty it worked very well, I could talk to Tom after I left the rock pile and Talk to the Ninja back at Warrenton at the sametime. But I yet again if a guy could improve it would be great. Thanks for your help.

I bought it through Boatantenae.com The model is: "529-VB 8' VHF 6dB Gain Antenna - Black". The cost was around $125...without mount (I already had that!) Service and delivery was excellant. Happy camper
