Bottom fishing
I need some advice. If a person were to either run out of Garabaldi or the Columbia river, besides the jetties, how far would a person have to run to get into some good bottom fishing???
My boat is only 18' so it can't be too far to run. Thanx for any advice.

Re: Bottom fishing
Out of the Columbia, I believe it is a long haul to a deep water reef about 20 miles southwest.
From Garibaldi, there is good bottomfishing to be had about 8-10 miles south of the jaws at three arches. Approx 45d27.50m N and 124d00.25m W. Lots of good bottomfishing from here south.
Be safe.

Re: Bottom fishing
This time of year you should think twice about taking a 18' boat out on the ocean.

Re: Bottom fishing
If you got to go out in a small boat run out of Depot Bay, we went with Depot Bay Dan and caught lings right out on the corners of the bay, Maybe a five min. run. Pick a good day if there is such a thing in winter ??

Re: Bottom fishing
February-March has some nice oceans most years. Depoe or Newport have close reefs with lots of bottom fish on them..Garibaldi is a long run south compartitively. The Columbia in the winter (or most times) is not a place to contemplate bottom runs in an 18" boat!

<font size="2" face="verdana,arial,helv">Yeppers, that there is!
Some of your best ocean can be found periodically throughout the winter months.
It can be like a lake!
And the fishing and crabbing can be excellent with some of the best lingcod fishing of the year in late winter (February).
I mentioned that factor and a couple others in a new years eve thread on the main forum:
Lingcod and Sturgeon Retention opens tomorrow
You’re best off fishing a big or small boat out of Depoe Bay as Martin85 said and some others.
Garibaldi and the Columbia are very dangerous bars and as Martin85 said, you don’t have to go very far at all to catch bottom fish out of Depoe Bay. (Heck we catch them off the rocks on both sides of the channel entrance)!
I’ll post that thread (fishing a small boat/bottom fish out of Depoe) I talked about on that other thread as soon as I possibly can.
I have had some major file conflicts with some of the info that I believe is the ocean charts I modified. Microsoft!
Will get it straightened out soon.

Re: Bottom fishing
Dan, Can't wait for the bottom fish information. I moved to the coast a few years ago and have been trying to teach myself rock fishing with little success. Pointers from the pro would be great!!!!
This is why ifish is the best!

Re: Bottom fishing
Hey Dano, I'd love to see the charts too. I was talking to Fish-N-Russ a while ago and he said you had it down.
Thanks,

Re: Bottom fishing
We ain't gonna be able to fish bottoms of the Columbia this year. The reef is 400' to 450' and 23miles off the beach. Unless you plan on fishing Nov. to May and that's a long way to go down unless it's real flat. On a small boat with any N. wind it's on your bow the whole way back.

Re: Bottom fishing
I have plenty of time out of both Garabaldi and the Columbia river, deckhanding on charter boats and fishing in my own personal boat. I just never went bottom fishing, we always went salmon fishing.
Well I take that back, once we did fish right up against the south jetty and caught some ling cod, the Columbia river south jetty, but its not the safest place in the world to be with a boat.

Say Tom, where are the boundaries for the bottom fishing this year, is there another port farther south or are we just screwed intirely?

Re: Bottom fishing
Mr. Brown Trout,
The real problem is weather, I went down 6 times last summer. Two trips were next to aborts
and 2 trips were on the edge with only one trip
flat. The reef is quite large but the schools of fish are quite small. We find the fish on the
fish finders than drop down hopefully straight.
If there is any wind or drift at 420' down you got to be able to get to the bottom quick. Power Pro or Tuff Line is a requirement along with 20oz to 24oz of lead. If the winds blows much more than 10knots forgetaboudit.
It's about a 75mile round trip from Warrenton but don't quote me on that.
Troy, I think the debth limit is 60 fathoms.
I intend to sneak out there in May for as many trips as we can get. June 1 we'll need to go to your hole down off Fly Rock.I ain't going anywhere near that place after Nov 1.

<font size="2" face="verdana, arial, helv">The "A" jetty there at Fort Canby State park is also a goo d place to catch bass and lings.
It is a submerged jetty perpendiccular to the north jetty located near the coast guard.
Problem is it is very hard to fish because of the tidal currents.
I've posted a lot about Depoe Bay in the past (since I became a member back in February) and the thing that is unique about it is as soon as you are under the 101 bridge (approx. a 2 minute boat ride from the launch  ), you are in rock fish country.
The average depths of the inshore reef fishing is from about 35' to 60' or 70'.
I have seen fly fishers fish there.
Tough line there is not necessary and I don't bother with it.
So it is kinda hard to beat, shallow water reefs, short boat ride to and fro, and lots of fish.
No ebb tide to be concerned about when transiting the channel.
Wow, sounds too good to be true, but it is!
Government Point located at Boiler Bay State park is only about a mile and a half or so to the north and that is a major reef and normally as far north as I go and Whale cove is only about the same distance, maybe a little farther to the south and that is normally all the farther I need to go to the south.
At times I travel further south to Morrocco and Gull Rock (my personal favorites) but that is for the experienced only as it has some hasardous wash rocks down there that can catch the inexperienced off guard and possibly capsize them.
Well, I'm snowed in here in Longview other wise I would go to my cabin on the Kalama River and attempt to get the info off my PC and bring it here and post it.
It's quite intense and a lot of usefull info and I'll try and get it done soon.

Re: Bottom fishing
Pressed for time but the answer to your question is jigs.
I have pic's on my PC of almost all the bottom fishing terminal tackle used at least all the standard tackle that I will post when I get the conflicts figured out with the ocean charts I modiified and have the time to make the complete post.
I haven't looked at the marine forecast but sounds like today would have been a good day to be down at Dopey Bay fishing a small or off the rocks.
Called down there and talked to a couple friends and actually one of my friends was out fishing on the ocean and talked to his wife and the other one said the ocean was nice.
I imagine it is about a 6' swell from the report I heard but don't know.
I will give a report of how my friend did later if I have the time.
Howard is the "king of lings" and if it was happening, I'll find out.
Should be!
Dan

Re: Bottom fishing
There have been some great days to get out on the water the last 2 weeks. 1 day this week and 2 last week when it was a LAKE. It would be great to have no responsibilities and be able to go out at the drop of a hat. I am looking forward to getting out in the next few weeks.

<font size="2" face="verdana, arial, helv">Further than you can swim!
The zipperlip Compass Rose and the Banana Banks are approx. 18 miles offshore of Depoe Bay.
The Chicken Ranch is approx. 32-33 miles offshore.
A long ways and not much to choose from inside.
Will try to get that Depoe Bay rockfish info on here soon.

Re: Bottom fishing
I too have an 18 foot boat. Much more important than the size of your vessel is it's condition and reliability, and your understanding of bar and ocean conditions and and how/when they get nasty. Until you have a firm grasp of this, I'd suggest that you always floatila up with someone who has it down pat.
When the ocean is friendlier (summer) I frequently run from Geribaldi to 3 arch rocks and SLAM the bottom fish. It's about a 7 mile hop. The entire area is rich with rocks and reefs, and over the last few years I have accumulated about a half dozen proven waypoints. One of them, "Ling 1" consistantly produces ling limits in one or two passes.
If you'd like to buddy up for my first bottom fish assault of the year, send me an email.

Re: Bottom fishing
The rocks north of Geribaldi are "Twin Rocks". I am unaware of any bottom fishing in this area, although out to about 200 ft of water from Twin Rocks is a good coho staging area.
