COCC Kokanee Fishing Class
This year's Central Oregon Community College Community Education class on Kokanee Fishing will be evenings April 9 and 16. Community Ed classes are for general knowledge and fun, no academic credit. Covering A-Z (jigging, bait fishing, trolling, downriggers, lures, rods and reels, attractors, scents, baits, lures, hooks, trolling speeds, water temp., and when where and how to fish Crescent, Paulina, LBC, Suttle, Odell, Wickiup) with discussion going where ever the class takes it.
Ponderosa Lodge, Sisters. Room discounts for attendees. Fishing at Suttle Lake (25 fish limits) 15 miles away. Official signup with COCC won't be until March, but we had such a good iFish turnout that I figure iFishers ought to get early notice and first shot at the seats (limited to 25, filled up in less than a week last year).
If you attended last year and have suggestions, PM me. If you learned anything new, good or helpful, awesome -- let a fish-bro know.

Re: COCC Kokanee Fishing Class
Is that the same class offered twice or one class consisting of two nights?
Is there test . A remedial class? I was going to ask if there was a correspondence option but I guess that is I-Fish.......

Re: COCC Kokanee Fishing Class
I don't know anything about the class but could use some kokanee education. Who teaches this? How much? Is it worth the drive from Salem?

Re: COCC Kokanee Fishing Class
DLM, different stuff on each night. Had lots of suggestions last year to take it to three nights, but I thought we'd try two again first. We did have some who attended only one session becuase they couldn't make two. Something for everyone regarding the class level. Beginners will be along for a fast ride with more info than they might absorb in one dose, long time kokannee types may only pick up a few new ideas, or maybe inspiration to branch out from their favorite technique or rig.
Evan, $29 last year, I expect it to be very close to that this year. "Taught" may not be the right word, but I will be sharing ideas I've gathered from dozens and dozens of good kokanee fishmen over the years. I'm a continuous student with many masters to thank! I'm doing it for fun and to stimulate more idea sharing. I'll leave it to others to help you decide if its worth coming from Salem, but we had folks come from as far as Vancouver, WA last year. They brought a boat and fished the next day or two.

Re: COCC Kokanee Fishing Class
Having attended last years seminars, I would highly recommend the class to anyone just starting out, or if your just looking for some new technics to try. The classes were extremely educational and covered a variety of kokanee subjects, and had many hands on equipment and lure demonstrations. It was a great class!

Re: COCC Kokanee Fishing Class
I enjoyed the class immensely last year. The majority of "students" were Ifishers and it was nice to put a face with some of the names from here. Seeing all the tackle and different rod set ups was nice. Studying for the final exam was a little intense, but I think we passed.

Re: COCC Kokanee Fishing Class
This info is exactly what I need, but making the drive from Harrisburg is prohibitive on a Thursday.
How about filming the event, putting it on disc, and selling them? I would GLADLY pay twice the cost of the class if the production is good.

I wish the did the days together...I could come over from the valley then....the 9th and the 16th though make it difficult to cover both days.

I would consider that if there is enough interest. The class has not been announced anywhere but iFIsh yet (April is still pretty far off). 6pm to 10pm on a Friday evening or 1-5pm on a Saturday instead of Thursday?

Re: COCC Kokanee Fishing Class
Yes, a one day class would be more doable for commuters. I would look at doing it if you did it that way and I could make it from Salem. Please let me know if the situation changes. I even have access to a place to stay and could go fishing next day with all my new knowledge.

The class sounds great, Soooo how about having one in the Portland area?
I just read thru all the info on the class, and now I am wondering how the fishing is after the class on the 16th? I think it might be a little early, but what Lakes would be good at that time?

Your nearby kokanee fishing options (all open year 'round unless something has changed) include Suttle, Haystack and Lake Billy Chinook (LBC). Spring is tricky. I've seen Suttle turn on (limits) as early as March but I've also seen it dead until the end of April (last year). Just depends on water temps and internal fish clocks. LBC fish are generally active earlier than Suttle (lower elevation, warmer tribs). Haystack? Noted for big kokanee, sometimes.

Correct -- not a very photogenic class . Lots of interaction, Q and A, handling rods and reels, and tackle display.
It would be great to know if there is significant interest in scheduling a single 4 hour session either on a Friday eve or Saturday afternoon (fishing Saturday am either way) instead of two 2 hour sessions. The final schedule decision is coming up. I'll post the outcome. Anyone wanting to attend, please PM me with your preference.

Just a guess but I bet more interest will be in a single 4 hour session..it would free up more fishing time!

Re: COCC Kokanee Fishing Class
Friday night would be best for me. I could then hit the lake with new knowledge Saturday morning. Might even get to fish with some new friends the next day.

Re: COCC Kokanee Fishing Class
This sounds like just what I need to figure out this kokanee fishing. One 4 hour class would be better for me. If anyone would be interested, we could car poll from the valley. I live in McMinnville and I could drive or share the cost with someone. and maby drag the boat and hit Suttle on the way home!!!
