My latest tuna lure
In my quest to have a few thousand tuna lures ......Yes, I know I have a tackle fetish problem.
I made a mold yesterday so I could just cast lead heads, it is a lot quicker than turning the cedar heads on the lathe.
Here is a pic of the mold which I made from a couple pieces of aluminum stock. A couple handles mounted on this side, and a hinge on the back side. I used a die grinder to egg the hole out, an overhead mill would have been a lot nicer I stand an 1/8 inch rod down the middle of the mold much like an egg sinker mold. Pour the lead, pull the rod out and you have the hole down the middle.
The mold makes 2 sizes of lead heads, One weighs 4 ounces the other is 5 ounces. I was hoping for about 3 and 5 ounces but they were closer in weight than I thought.
Here is a pic of one of my cedar heads I have been making next to the new lead heads.
Here are a few heads that I have primed waiting to be painted in dazzling colors.
And here is a lead head with no paint and some feathers being tied on the tail completing the lure. I like the heads painted with an epoxy coating better, even though it may not catch any more fish.

Your going to need a bigger boat. A much bigger boat.
I can see it now, "61 Degrees Tackle Supply - We're just an hour west of Depoe Bay".

BOE- My neighbor is a tool and die maker. Has all the hi tech stuff. If you want some molds cut let me know. He's also a fisherman, goes to AK every year.
Not sure he's ever caught an Albi though (hint hint).

Bait O Eggs:
Nice molds... You need to make a pusher head mold with "jet holes" So the jigs can make a big bubble trail.

Re: My latest tuna lure
RJ I had the same problem, I couldnt find one either. The good thing about my mold is a hoochie will fit on these heads as well as the hand tied on feathers.
I finished up a few of the lures this weekend. These I believe will fish better than anything I have dabbled in so far, they feel plenty heavy but that should help keep them in the water.
I ran out of feathers, so I need to get to the store for some more supplies.
Here is this weekends batch.

Bottom pic, top row, third and fourth from the right. Opps, sorry, wrong thread.
BOE, great looking jigs. I believe that with the extra weight from being lead, they will fish very well.
You are a gifted craftsman.
(ps) how did you attach the hinge on your mold?
Peace, Tom

Re: My latest tuna lure
I was almost afraid to view this post Roy after the last time you posted pictures. To bad you have so much creativity. Kind of the Christopher Lowell of lure making.

Re: My latest tuna lure
Hey Roy - I will add flotation chanbers to the dory for the aditional weight and I won't bring any gear of my own except handlines.
Those colors look awesome!!!!
You have to come up with a good name for those "flared-gill" plugs, based on their shape something randy seems fitting.
Where are you getting the hackle from? I found some in Port. and the price was so high that I might have to trade-in my first born. You still have both of your children don't you?

Re: My latest tuna lure
You're right Wak, I'll bet the chicken coup gets real quite when Roy leaves the house!
I can hear them now:
"Run everyone, he's at it again!"
"Save yourselves, he can't get any more off me!"

Re: My latest tuna lure
Rod - It was cold at my house last night, so I burned those cedar plugs I have been holding for you. They made great fire starter
Wak - 30 chickens  I go thru 30 chickens before lunch But I like the idea of moving the tacklebox around to correct the ride
Ed - havent see the kids for a while, I think they are still around somewhere I have a pretty good outlet for feathers, I stopped by to get some and with the quantity of feathers I got they assumed I was a corporate account
