Default Private Land hunting opportunity

Greetings:

I was forwarded a flyer tonight from a grazing association in John Day, Oregon. They are involved in a legal fight with the Forest Service and a conservation group over alleged damages grazing is doing to wild steelhead habitat.

They are holding a dinner and auction on Feb 21 to pay for legal expenses they are incurring. The dinner is in John Day. The auction items include several deer and elk hunts on private land, including the LOP tag, 3 private land bison hunts, some turkey hunts, sage rat hunts, coyote hunts, a couple of youth hunts, etc. They are allowing bids by telephone.
I beleive all the hunts are access only, and not guided, but don't know that for sure.

I have not researched any of this and am not endorsing the purposes for which the funds raised would be used. I do, however, support the right of all Americans to seek redress in our courts, even if I disagree with them, and believe they have a right to be heard on this issue.

More importantly, this appears to be an opportunity to access a quality private land hunt without getting divorced, or losing the homestead, depending on the level of bidding. The elk hunts appear to be mostly in the Northside unit, the deer hunts in Northside and the northern part of the Murderer's Creek unit.

I recieved a flyer and map, as well as a brief explanation of the issues involved. I am planning on calling one of the principals in the next couple of days, and thinking about attending. Not sure I will bid on anything, but would be very interesting to see what things go for in this economy.

If any of you want the flyer/info, shoot me a pm, or your email address to my email address below, and I will forward it to you. If some people are interested in going, maybe we could have an I-fish table.

I wonder if these are the same guys that are behind the Oregonian article that grazing is good for the forest around Muderer's Creek and that the elk are the real problem?

I agree that this issue should be settled in court. Though, I'm not a huge fan of grazing on public lands and near public waterways.

If you do engage in the bidding, just remember what cause you're supporting.

The grazing on the forest land is only for a short period of time in the summer so that the area is not overgrazed. What they dont tell you is about the 500 head of feral horses in the area that live there year round. Horses do the majority of the damage to the Malhuer forest. If you hunt that area then you know that you find more horses than elk.

They need to get rid of the feral horses first, then see if there is an impact with cattle grazing. Horses pull the grass out roots and all, cows graze. Plus I have had many stalks on bulls ruined do to stallions spooking off the elk.

The thing to remember is that the hunts are LOP only so you can only hunt on the private property. The turkey hunts should be good, but the deer and elk hunts might be difficult to hunt, sometimes the elk pull way back during the hunting season and you wont see them at all.
