What an incredible article! It reminded me of some of Pilar's stories where I was glued to the monitor eagerly reading the next sentence.

Re: Required Tuna reading...
Happy New Year Ray!
Was the boat the 'Ghetto Booty'?
That is the best narrative I have read in a long time. Like many of you I go into a 'zone' when TUNA! fishing is being instigated. Time begins to run at different speeds and all things lead to the moments in the cockpit spent battling the thrashing TUNA! For a few minutes, I was there hauling handlines and yelling REEL, REEL, REEL! I have seen the 1000 yard stare on a few faces and it is always the same. In an instant all other fish are forgotten, all other fishing becomes filler. Between the boing! of a handline snapping tight and the screaming of three 4/0 Penns in unison ... the new guy is transformed and doomed. He doesn't know it yet and may not figure it out until the day is done.
Yep, good article and all right except for one detail.
There is hope .. we have tunaholics anonymous and time marches on.

I was that "new guy" once. Only problem was there were three "new guys" on the boat that day and no one with experience. What a rush...
The power of friends is endless and his last paragraph says it all!

Great read!!
Surely if you don't know, you just don't know.
I have seen that blood, and felt the power of these fish. I, too now have cloths just for this task, and this task only.
We are blessed to have such memories, and glorious anticipation of hookups to come.
Have a safe and Happy New Year.
Peace, Tom

Re: Required Tuna reading...
Reminds me of my first trip this year - took a seasoned veteren and a new guy. We were getting geared up, which included getting the washdown hose ready, and the new guy says "what's that for?" The reply, almost in unison from the two of us who have been there was - "it will come in handy when the decks are awash in tuna blood". He laughs and says "yea right". We just stare at him and say "yea - right".
He caught the bug big time on that trip!

Re: Required Tuna reading...
Ya know, Dean, when a newbie is that disbelieving, it is tempting to let him know that his job is to rip the gills out of the first tuna (of course, without first spiking the brain) so he gets the total body bath.
"Yea, it's real easy. You hold the fish by the tail in one hand, and rip out the gills with the other hand. But don't let go of it!"

Re: Required Tuna reading...
These stories and all this talk isn't doing anyone any good! It's snowing for godsake! The water is 45 degrees. The passes over to the coast are iced over. We must realize that tuna is a long way off - and we must find other things to do until the water warms back up.
I think I'll go sit in my boat. Maybe tweak the quench tank system I have rigged up.

It's not much better here at the coast! My back deck overlooks the CR here - you know it's cold when the pintails here are rafted up thick on the water!

Re: Required Tuna reading...
I know what it is like to be just a regular fisher, a guy who thinks about fishing everyday (salmon, steelhead, trout). And I know there are lots of people out there who just don't get it and never will.
What's scary is that I suspect my fishing disease is like a mild sneeze compared to the tuna flu afflicting the tuna fishers on this board.
I'm a perfectly happy guy with the fishing I do now. As Jack Nicholson (sort of) said, "You don't want the truth about tuna fishing. You can't handle the truth about tuna fishing."
But someday I'll try.

That is an awesome story. I to would love to tune fishing as I have never been. While reading the story I was imagining (sp) that being me out there. as the rookie. That must be quite an experience. Hope to get the chance. Brian

What no bait fish? Can't believe in the first 10 minutes they didnt' throw bait. Bite like that would have had them foaming in the corner. Otherwise I feel the guys pain. Tuna addiction is impossible to get over. My wife DOES NOT get up when I leave although we ususally leave the day before.
