Fish Revival Method......
I was watching the outdoor channel and watched a guy release I believe was a tuna (I turned it on late in the battle and didn't get a good look at it) but they revived it's bladder by pushing on the fish behind the pectoral fin. Supposedly this pushes the air out of the bladder that's choking the fish. I wasn't paying much attention to it until that point and thought that was a really interesting thing and had never heard of it. Anyone else know about this?

Re: Fish Revival Method......
It wasn't a tuna, they don't have swim bladders.

Re: Fish Revival Method......
I tried the same technique on a blue shark one time but to no avail. Everytime I pushed on his bladder the blood kept shooting out of the hole I put in his head with the gaff. Maybe I just wasn't doing it right?

Re: Fish Revival Method......
TC,
The fish was an Amber Jack, or Kahala to the locals in Hawaii. Brought up from 80 fathoms. Not real good table fare(worms), but great fight.

Re: Fish Revival Method......
Worms? Halibutt are full of them. Most fish have some sort of parasitic organism. Ever see those yellowish puss like things under the skin of an albacore?

Re: Fish Revival Method......
I think the yellowish things on albacore are histamines caused by exertion during the fight. I could be wrong though.

Re: Fish Revival Method......
Speaking of those "yellow-ish" things...
Being my first year tuna fishing, I'd read up on pretty much everything there is to know about catching Albacore, and caring for the fish once it's caught. The fish was spiked, bled, chilled in a quench tank of salty-ice brine, then packed in ice. When I carked my first tuna, I was shocked to see this yellow stuff, believing it was the dreaded histamine buildup related to Scombroid Poisoning. I scraped it off with my knife, and knowing the fish had been properly cared for...ate the fish. No Problem...
It soon became apparent that virtually all my fish had this, and in fact, I noted numerous little yellow deposits on the outside of the fish, right behind the pectral fin. Some fish seemed to have more of it than others, and I didn't keep track of what fish were caught on sport rods and which were caught on handlines, except that some fish had the spots upon entering the boat.
I've come to the conclusion that it was a natural phenomenon, and that it wasn't something I needed to be concerned with.
Anyone else see this?

I saw it on the kidneys and livers too. Mostly on the rod caught fish but some of the handline ones had it too.

Re: Fish Revival Method......
This yellow spot is a parasite of the muscle called "didymozoid trematodes".
We've seen this for years, usually in one out of about five fish, and maybe two to ten "spots" per fish. Just scrape them off & eat as normal.
Histamine is an enzyme; you can't see it. The only visible sign of scombroid poisining is seeing the chunks you blow into the toilet.

KGS is right. It was an Amber Jack. I happened to catch that last night on the Outdoor Channel too!

We should ask Jennie if she can create a puking gremlin. I'm sure it wouldn't get over-used, would it?

Re: Fish Revival Method......
Another popular method I hear used all the time is the "filet and release" method. There hasn't been any studies to my knowledge on the survival rate, but many experts believe it to be low.

Re: Fish Revival Method......
Who scrapes?? Guys I've talked to said they've seen it on fish for years. One guy used to be a commercial fisherman back in the 60's or 70's.

Key West .. that comes from Canada. Filet and release is fish conservation there. Anyone for a little South Park Blame Canada?
Rod, is that a commercial salmon fisher technique?

Re: Fish Revival Method......
Hey, it really does work on tuna. Just a small stab right behind the pectoral fin and, viola, LOTS of pressure is released. You can even watch it, too.
Rod and El-Kabong, we need a "spattered" icon along with the ralphing one.
