Re: Pick your favorite
Great looking plugs I am a wanna be tuna capt and am planning on going next summer when the season starts up. I don't have any gear yet, but would like to get started putting some stuff together. Any suggestions on which plugs to get? and how do I go about getting some of these ordered??
Will be attending the next TA meeting in Portland, so I hope you will be around and have the chance to visit. . Yeah, I am gonna need the hand lines, cedar plugs, Yo-zur's, dozers, spooners, kites, birds, attractors, detractors and whatever else works. Plus all that other good stuff. Any help on starting up my 5th tackle box is greatly appreciated.
I know that Mel and Bernie would probably like to help me spend some $$'s. Anybody else going to gear up this winter?? I see the other posts about getting gear, so I guess the time is right. I am down to one case of canned tuna and a few loins, so I hope the fish come early!!

I like the shape of some of those butt plugs.
What do you need hand lines for? Most down here don't bother.

Re: Pick your favorite
How are you making these - if you don't mind my asking - do you have a lead mould or??

Re: Pick your favorite
Keywest - everything pictured above is made of cedar. In the nose of the heads I have a 7/16 diameter hole drilled a little over an inch and have placed between 1.5 and 2 ounces of lead (approx guess, havent actually weighed them). I dont use a duplicator on my lathe, I just eyeball them and made each a little different.
The feathered bodies above are just short heads kind of like a Zuker. I made a smaller diameter section under the thread where the feathers tie on so I get a fairly smooth profile. The cedar plugs are just a longer version of the same without the feathers.
I didnt inlcude pictures of the lures I have made with no cedar where I just cast a solid lead head with an 1/8 diameter hole, painted it up pretty put some eyes on it and tied feathers off the tail. I made the mold for the solid lead heads from bondo.
I sure hope santa gets that new tackle box here soon I have ran out of room for storage.

Re: Pick your favorite
Roy, you're going to need to make arrangements with the Coast Guard before you load your boat. There's a significant risk that your boat may start taking on water if you load 1000 tuna lures into your boat. I'm starting to worry about you.

Re: Pick your favorite
I would love to try some of these, especially the smaller ones. I would be interested in working out an arrangement if you like where I pay to cover the costs and provide detailed feedback returned to you with the lures, after each trip. This might help you refine your designs...assuming you plan to go comercial.
A thought, Dave

Re: Pick your favorite
1000 lures sounds just about right to me its the rod situation that I'm wondering about. How long is your boat??If you get the right crew one good man could monitor say 50 poles at a time if the bites on you may be in trouble. Those lures look great especially the plastic tails. Feathers seem to not last as long.Great job. Mark

Re: Pick your favorite
Those are great Roy!
So you used bondo to make the mold but I'm still a little concerned what item you used to actually make the shape of some of those designs? And does your wife know you used it for that?
Sorry.

Re: Pick your favorite
Roy,
I'd be happy to test market and document any
and all hits. I am able to run 10 handlines and 4 stand up rods.
Let me know, I'd share in the development (purchase) cost's.

Re: Pick your favorite
These are not for sale, and I certainly dont have plans of going commercial I just like fishing tackle, and fully stocking a tuna gear box in a short time is very expensive so I have been making lures so I will be properly equiped when season gets here.
I do give the lures away on a very regular basis though
So far nobody has a favorite? Which one looks like a winner? My bet is the bottom right in the first picture will bring home fish

Top left in the third picture would be the first lure I'd put out.

Re: Pick your favorite
When I said pick your favorite I meant "Pick you favorite"
This post has been up for 24 hours and for those that played and picked out your favorite lure, email me your address and I will mail it to you. For those that didnt play and for Corrirod a double
Pete - Good choice, that would be one of my first ones in the water. It has a "secret" finish that isnt visible to the eye, that I think will produce from my limited testing last year.
Kamloops - your getting a green skirt, I wont ask why you want a green skirt
Threemuch - which is it? "1st pic, second lure from the left and right, second pic, the whole bottom row" pic one from your choice.
WP - Which is it? "1st pic, 2nd lure on the lower left; and the first two lures on top left of the 2nd picture" pick one from your choice.
Contest over, thanks for playing.

1st pic, 2nd lure on the lower left. The one that looks a little like a "mean joe green"! WOW, I didn't realize that you were offering! I will have to read more carefully! Thanks in advance

Re: Pick your favorite
Wow. THanks! Since WP took my fav, I will take the second pic, bottom row, all the way on the right. Thanks again! I have been experimenting with machining some jet heads, but I haven't been tying any up. My buddy steve did a couple in white, and we caught fish with it this year. I have been saving duck feathers to tie some more, since they won't need to be dyed. I have green, blue and black covered anyway.

Re: Pick your favorite
Like I said the butt plugs. Just out of curiousity how long are they? Store bought seem to be about 8"-10"? In all seriousness is there a reason for the ah peculiar shape? Does it dive deeper? Really no pun intended.

Re: Pick your favorite
The lures look great, they have a diffrent aspect ratio (Length/ Diameter) than your typical tuna feather which will push more water. I suggest putting some through holes from nose to tail to create a bigger bubble trail "smoke trail". this through hole idea is popular with metal head lures also known as Jet Heads.

Hey Roy - They all look great - can't wait to try some out on big blue. Save a couple for the Team Pilsbury adventures. Did get that trailer so I'm back in the driftboat fishing business-will be in touch.

I like the first row, second one in line from the left. I love to see those purple jigs in a pattern. It brings home the tuna fillets!

Nice lookn' lures
You are really developing a talent!!
My guess on a "Producer" lure, and favorite, is in the first picture, 2nd row, 6th lure over(from left), "The Silver Bullet" I see many-a-fish brought to the boat on that one
Good job!!

Are those lures as short as the contest was ?
Just joking I saw the quarter for size reference.
They look like plugs of fun.
Great lures!
