New Wireless Modem On The Julie Rose
Well...I'm sittin' on the Julie Rose typing this message without having to be connected to the expensive satellite phone!!
Nextel now has a wireless pcmia modem, and I'm gettin' full bar signal on the boat! I'm on an unlimited plan. Maybe now.......Julie Rose Cam???? This is so cool!!!!

Re: New Wireless Modem On The Julie Rose
I've read that the wireless modems are running around 150 - 200k. It is that fast? How do they charge you, by the minute?

Re: New Wireless Modem On The Julie Rose
I like it. Instead of calling the CG and looking at Jetty cam, we will just watch the JRII Cam as you cross the bar on a first strike mission. Super!

Outstanding! What a deal!
Now when I'm stuck on land I can just hop on the internet and watch you catch fish!

Re: New Wireless Modem On The Julie Rose
Hey Bruce,
I'm very interested in this topic. Are you going to be on your boat tomorrow? I think this would be a fantastic boost to our communications ability out there. If you are going to be on the Rose in the a.m., I'll stop by..

Re: New Wireless Modem On The Julie Rose
I am surprised they have data channels out there. On ATT when I checked only limited areas got the data protocal too. Bascially it was the I5 corridor and the PDX-Metro area, nothing more.
Keep us posted, sounds cool.

Re: New Wireless Modem On The Julie Rose
It would be very, very cool to get updated sea temp shots while on the water....

Re: New Wireless Modem On The Julie Rose
No, it's only 54k, but that's OK, the satellite was only 9600@ $1.39/min. This is $54.95 a month for UNLIMITED time!

Re: New Wireless Modem On The Julie Rose
It may be cheaper than satellite but it is still land based. Which means the signal is line of sight and limited to the FCC signal strength allowed for portable cellular devices.
If you are really into doing a boat-cam at sea the amateur radio 2 meter class license has a packet TV system and it is less sensitive to the weak signals that cellular phones work on.

Re: New Wireless Modem On The Julie Rose
Do they have a wireless network at South Beach? Embarcadero has installed one. I don't know if it is working yet, but they had a strong signal from it all over the marina last June.

Re: New Wireless Modem On The Julie Rose
Corrirod said something about where to put his Lap Top on his boat.
I found this thought it might be of intrest to some.
Happy New Year!

Re: New Wireless Modem On The Julie Rose
Popeye,
Somehow I missed this thread!
I've hooked up some webcams at remote sites so may be able to help. If you don't have it hooked up yet let me know and I'll come over and see what you've got. Trust me, I don't need much of an excuse to head west.

Re: New Wireless Modem On The Julie Rose
Popeye,
Did your camera come in? We've all been kinda snowed in, so I'm not sure I could have gotten to your office if I'd have wanted to.
Lemme know.
Jim

Re: New Wireless Modem On The Julie Rose
Popeye, any updates? I will soon be getting on the EDGE network with WWAN. Their coverage looks good down the coast, and WWAN has an aweseme reach. Which should do well to get out to tuna town.
EDGE and Coverage
GC82 Edge card
I worked with a guy at an offsite for two days, no 802.11 around and he was connected non stop the whole time. Bandwidth was 1Mbps to 10Mbps! Kicks GPRS big time.
Let me know if you want to test its range on the big boat!
Not too cheap...about 80 a month for unlimited.
