Default Newport Crabbing Saturday?

I am in dry Nevada today and wondering if it will be worth going crabbing in Newport this Saturday? Anyone know how it has been or whether there is too much fresh water coming through.....good tides? Appreciate the info as we are staying the weekend near Otter Rock.

I've not heard any reports and am guessing no news is bad news on this subject.

The forecast is for rain later in the week. If that is true, the spiders will be gasping in the bay. I may go over Friday as I have the day off and nothing to do. I'm planning on it being a boat ride with lots of lifting.

Good luck if you go.

I have always heard that winter time is the best time for crabbing, and now I know (first season crabbing) about how excess fresh water flushes out the crab.

Since Oregon winters are basically a continuous stream of rain storms, how is it that winter time is such a good time to go crabbing? Is the idea that a couple of days of dry weather will make the bays fill will huge crabs?

...or, when people talk about too much fresh water are they really talking about flooding conditions (like last weekend)?

Yes, I realize this sounds like a really idiotic question, but I had to ask.

The bay was pretty dark and starting to mud up this morning. A couple of days ago we got over 3 inches of rain here, so it might be a couple of days to before it clears up. The Yaquina has a tendency to stay muddy longer than the other local rivers.

Good luck!

Last year I was so anxious to use my new boat I went crabbing right after heavy rains and resultant flooding. The fields off of hwy 20 were flooded, the water looked like mocha and we limited every time. I think part of the reason was that no one else was there.

Harvesters on central Oregon coast advised to avoid crab viscera. South coast removed from advisory......more info at: http://www.oda.state.or.us/informati...31209crab.html
