New offshore ride - Striper
My bro is headed off to pick up his new boat.. 96 Striper w/ inboard 305. I can't get the better pics to upload for some reason, but here is one shot of the new ride to Tuna town. With 130 Gallons of fun juice she ought to make the round trip nicely.
It is a Striper 2300, 24 and some odd inches. She comes with tuna tower + seat...gulp. not so sure I am going to be sitting up that high.
Trailer is a trail rite I think with 4 wheel disc.
It has a Lowrance fish finder that has not been installed yet. It comes with a through hull mount kit. What are the beenies of through hull versus off stern? I assume less prop wash and not collecting gunk? anything else?
We will be moving my chart plotter over, but we are going to get a radar for it. So I will be reading as much as I can here, and input is always welcome.

Re: New offshore ride - Striper
Nice ride. Congrats!
I have a transom mount 'ducer and was going to put in a through hull. I was told by the dealer that for a trailer boat, it was better to leave the transom mount on since the through hull could get damaged by the trailer if you arent careful when you load it.
The benefits are what you said, cleaner readings especially at higher speeds. You dont really need to slow down to get good readings like you do with the transom mount. Thats what I've read, anyway. I've never seen one perform.

Re: New offshore ride - Striper
Ooo,,, that is a good point, the trailer could munge up the transducer if not mounted right.
Bernie,,,Oh yes, I get 3rd seat behind mrs. bill, my brother said...she is all yours when you feel comfortable..But I think that for Tuna I want him along, and like wise. We make a good team. He will keep it down in your neck of the woods next summer
Capactity... I think is 130 Gallons. @ 2.5GPH we should be OK for Tuna town. We will start with Hali fishing first, and get a feel for it. Then look for wingman positions of course.
Hey bernie you want a ride?

Re: New offshore ride - Striper
Nice boat Gus. You might check your estimate of 2.5GPH though. At 20 knots, you are probably burning close to 10 GPH.

Re: New offshore ride - Striper
Gus, you well love the boat. I have the 26' striper, it handles the water great. I may have to follow you out for those tuna. I'm going to start fishing them this next year. Great boat.

Re: New offshore ride - Striper
Pitch, Yeah I am sure the reality will hit soon enough as Mileage may vary. Don't know if the numbers quoted were trolling, at speed, or a combined average of a mako hunt/fish. But .5GPH would seem way too low for an overall day of fishing but I haven't run at boat at 8knots for long enough to know what to expect either. We will need to build up some experience, first on the columbia and then start streching its legs.
Fisherguy...you are more than welcome to follow, but we will be keeping one of veterans in sight. As our knowledge base will be buidling over the next few years. We plan to take it slow. What powerplant you got in your 26' striper?

Re: New offshore ride - Striper
SWWEEEET!!! I have watched many Striper boats on the big blue pond, they cut a nice wake, and seem to be a very dry ride.
Learn her inside and out, then from the outside-in.
Peace, Tom

Re: New offshore ride - Striper
Gus, nice ride and congrats on finding a used striper. I took a new one on a test ride yesterday, like everything but the price. Do you mind telling us what you gave for the boat? I'm trying to decide between a striper and acb and I was wondering about resale.
thanks,
glen

Re: New offshore ride - Striper
The closing was low 24Ks, and the guy packed the wheel bearings for the trip home. AS it sits low blue is 32K+. All the canvas materials have never been installed. They are new in their packages. Same goes for the Lowarnce LCX-16ci...nice combo plotter/sonar, never used, along with the in hull mounted transducer/speedo/temp. Not sure if I posted above but the buy had just bought his wife a 100K sail boat sine she didn't like fishing for mako.
There is one like it on marine drive, but it has the 200HP evinrude and apparently there were some issues with that year/model. I guess there was a recall and some of poor behavior weren't fully fixed? Somebody here might have some history.
Chomping at the bit to get her out!

Re: New offshore ride - Striper
Gus- Looks like you and Bill won't be riding with me any more. Hope to have you as running mates. Maybe you can keep up with Key West and scout for us.
I guess Bill got the bug pretty bad that day huh?

Re: New offshore ride - Striper
Joby you are on. But make that 5-Cs...Cark IT.
Mel, wrong O... we would still love to ride in the luxury of the Miss B, the ride is plush, dinner cruise, whale watching, the comedy entertainment and top it off with a game of shuffle board!
Of course you might want to join us for a quick outing as well. That way you can play and not always be the host.
Yep, billy boy, got bit. But he was near the edge for a long time before we hitch hiked with you. You just pushed him over.
The boat is home now... I got to get out and take some better digi pix of it and post. This was is horrible.

Re: New offshore ride - Striper
Nice Boat,
I bought a 2002 Blue Water 22ft sportfisher and it burns about 6 to 8 gallons an hour at that speed, but load and water condtions will be the factor. That thing will be able to handle some rough water with out to much worry. At full RPM 4900 it burns 17.5 an hour but thats 49.5 or 50 mph and it has a volvo duoprop 220 which is a GM vortec 305 as well. With 130gl you will be able to run hard all day out there. Again....... Nice Boat
