Default Vote No on PETA's use of Nemo

There is another thread on ifish community on this subject ("Petafiles").

Disney has invited your comment on PETA using Nemo for their campaign. You can e-mail them at:

productenforcement@disney.com

or call toll free 818-560-3300

Armed with Nemo, this PETA campaign is encouraging children to eat tofu fish substitutes, avoid "cruelty" to fish, and to "seek healthful alternatives to bacteria- and toxic-laden sea animals."

I wonder if the Australians even eat clown fish? They seem like a waste of time to me too small and I don't think there is gear light enough to even make it a good fight!

Mark, Thanks for the heads up - this is scary stuff - and the threat is very real. Have you read the abstract on some research project in the UK that claims that fish "feel" pain? We all need to voice our opposition on this. Bob

I called and left the message that it seemed a shame that a group like PETA could hijack one of Disney's characters just to further their own fringe agenda. I told them we really enjoyed the movie but were disappointed that now it seems like Nemo belongs to PETA.

I purposefully used terms like "hijack," "fringe," and "belongs," as hot-words to highlight my concern. I'll bet Disney won't like it that people are thinking Nemo has been hijacked and now belongs to someone else. They're pretty possessive of their characters.

This is precisely why I have a problem with humanizing animals in mass media format and marketing it to kids. It gives kids the impression that animals have the same emotional responses has people do, thus instilling a disproportionate feeling of compassion for animals. I'm not saying there is anything wrong with compassion towrad animals, but IMHO, a disproportionate level is unhealthy.

I have made sure that my kids understand the difference between reality and fantasy with respect to movies. They have watched me catch and club fish (oh, I'm going to get a phone call now), field dress and skin deer and dress ducks and bunnies since they were old enough to walk.

As far as PETA hijakking (sp - filter) Nemo, I think that the level of humanization of those fish is a large part of it. The fish "feel," they have emotions. Who in their right mind would want to kill something that just wants to "touch your butt?"

PETA is right you people!
Let your dogs and cats go now into the wilds of Oregon and live in their natural way.
Be nice to microbes.
I read another abstract about how broccoli has a primative nervous system.
It's ridiculously inhumane how they plant them in such crowded rows and decapitate them just before they have a chance to spawn with each other. Doesn't it just make you sick.

Here's what I sent:
Dear Disney,
Finding Nemo is an entertaining premise for a story which teaches children some valuable lessons about life, relationships, and loyalty in the midst of crisis. It need not teach the children of America that it is wrong to eat any protein from the sea.
I am writing in hopes that you will block any use of Nemo by PETA or other animal rights groups. There are millions of American's who hunt and fish annually. Risking disenfranchising them would be a mistake.
Many of us have not lost the connection between the earth's ecosystems, and human dynamics. To deny the predator/prey relationship between humans and the fauna of the planet is tantamount to denying hundred's of thousands of years of evolution.
Please do not fall into the "Bambi Trap" that you set for yourselves in the 1940's.
Deny PETA the right to use Nemo in their anti meat campaign!
Sincerely,
My name and address
If it doesn't go through, I'll light 'em up via the 800#!!

OregonRedside - Nuh-uh... technically I stole it from NoahII :-) http://www.ifish.net/cgi-local/ultim...;f=24;t=002176

My question for Disney was: Do you really want to blemish the Disney name with an association with a fanatic radical group like PETA? It would appear to me as though Disney shares their same views.

Oh my! On KOIN 6 news, they just showed a PETA billboard that says Santa's not coming this year and milk kills - propoting soy.....what extents will these people not go to in order to advance theirs silly cause??? I think someone in PETA is invested in soy. All about money and trying to tell people how to live their lives.

I just can't stand the way a tomatoe screams when you pluck it from the vine! I think I'll stick with PETA (people for the eating of tasty animals). Well maybe a screaming tomatoe, and some intelligent broccoli too. Wait, does that mean they will shut down the machines that put the little brown wrapper on potatoes.

Well I just called the Phone # listed and talked to a very nice lady by the Name of Jannie. I approached the subject of Nemo and she was willing to devulge that Disney is definitly working to kill this issue as Disney wants no part of political issues like this. She took my name and phone number and I gave her this web address.

So Disney is aware of this situation, they are looking into it as a trade mark infringement and I think we can rest assured that PETA may have a lawsuit on their hands. She was very appreciative of my call and the information I gave to her.
