Need more input on the next TA meeting!
O.k., unfortunately we have to make a decision on the date for the TA meeting and based on the Poll thread it looks like January 24-25th wins. I'm sorry if that doesn't work out for everyone but I have to go with the majority.
So, that being said, January 24th-25th is Tunaholic Weekend!
Now for the next step, what's on the agenda? Well, I've made arrangements to have someone from the Coast Guard Auxillary give a presentation Saturday afternoon followed by a tour of the Yaquina Bay Coast Guard Station. Anybody interested?
They will customize their presentation to whatever we want. They do have some presentations on Ocean Safety/Equipment as well as Survival which I thought would be interesting. They can go over survival statistics, scenarios and how best to handle them, etc.. Let me know if you have a better idea.
I'm thinking of allotting 1-2 hours for the presentation and then probably a 30-45 minute tour of the Coast Guard Station for 2 groups depending on how many people plan on attending. They can't run 50+ people thru the tour at a time so we'll probably have to divide it up into 2 or more groups.
So, if we started the presentation at 1pm, that would put us right up to around dinner time(or pre-dinner drink time) by the time everyone finished the tour. Which leads us to the next planning issue........the location.
Salty Walty has a contact at Best Western that may be able to help us out but for right now, I checked at the Shilo Inn in Newport and they have a large conference room that we can get for free if we get more than 10 rooms at the hotel. Rooms are $69 unless we get a lot more than 10 rooms. They do not require that we purchase food or drink from them so we could possibly do the "pot-luck" thing but I'm not sure how we'd warm up the "hot" food items? Drinks could be BYO which would be cool. A conference room large enough to Banquet 88 people, which means you have 10 round tables of 8 people each, runs about $275 by itself if we can't get at least 10 rooms sold. All the rooms at the Shilo are oceanfront.
So young Skywalker, your mission, should you choose to accept it, is to give me ideas on meeting events, Yea or Nea on the potluck idea, Yea or Nea on the hotel conference room idea, and if Yea on the hotel conference room then tell me your Hotel preference and Yea or Nea on whether you will be getting a room.
Also, if anyone feels as though they would like continued education on Sunday, I'm sure the Coast Guard Auxillary would be willing to give a Boat Licensing Exam course for those of us who need one for the 2004 season. I get an exemption since I have my commercial license but I'd be willing to take the class if there were enough other people to make it worthwhile. Let me know.
This is going to be one to remember!

Re: Need more input on the next TA meeting!
I live in the Newport area and so won't need a room. The idea of a potluck is great in my book, I could treat y'all to my seafood chowder! BYOB is a good idea too. Anywhere you want to have the shingding is okay with me but I will not be doing the tour thing. Have been there enough that I feel like a member. Also since I have a masters license, I won't need the license training class but I think it's a great idea.

Re: Need more input on the next TA meeting!
Man o man, I wish I'd given up planning these things a long time ago! This sounds like a blast!
I talked with Pilar and you can count us in. We'll likely take one of them thar rooms... maybe even two, or a suite or something 'cuz it looks like we'll have the kids that weekend.
As for hot dishes for a potluck, crock pots are awesome and places like Big Lots and the Dollar Tree have disposable chafing dishes you can use with the little sterno deals... Aww, ferget it, who needs hot food! we'll just pull up a chair around the nearest TUNA! dish anyway.
Lookin' forward to it Rod!

Re: Need more input on the next TA meeting!
Ms. M-Y and I are tentatively planning on making this one. I only say tentatively cuz everytime I try to schedule something that "I" want to do, something else comes up to ruin it for me.
Rod, great planning man! If we do come up we'll likely get one of them there rooms at the Shilo...ya know...just in case I somehow become inhibriated...or something like that.
I'll keep ya'll posted!

Re: Need more input on the next TA meeting!
Rod,
I'm pretty sure we can make that. We won't need a room  but the tour sounds like a winner. Conference room, Rogue, don't matter to me. Course the Julie Rose is always open for limited gatherings (before, after, whatever) If there's anything I can do to help, just holler, I'm over there fairly often check'n on the boat

Re: Need more input on the next TA meeting!
Yeah Rod...you're awesome  I/we should be there by late afternoon Sat. Since the forecast that weekend is sunny and 80 degrees... another thought ( I think M-Y mentioned it earlier) is both South Beach and Beverly Beach State Parks have conference type buildings (may need a reservation)and have outside tables and BBQ's.

Re: Need more input on the next TA meeting!
Don't get me wrong, I would really, really, really like to do the BBQ thing but I think that meeting would be better suited for next summer. I'd hate to have it be just miserable out and nobody wants to come down.
Besides, I have can't consume "as much" alcohol when I'm cold! (Did I say that?)
I really think the conference room will work out good, especially having the presenters there and hopefully a whole bunch of tackle demo's. Perhaps with some liquid Agave persuasions we could get the Master, Pilar, to continue his tackle/gear assembly classes? Tuna Tom's tuna arsenal display? Mel's burgee thong happy dance? Keta's disertation on tuna death investigations: "How to read tuna blood spatters"? Aquaholic's.......hmmm....well, let's not get that carried away!
You get the idea.
I'm going to start another POLL thread to start getting a head count for the Coast Guard Class/Tour as well as the Boaters Card Certification class. The class on Sunday might be a little much depending on how the night before went but we'll take a poll just in case. I just thought it might be good timing to get it out of the way for those who will be needing it this 2004 season.
Keep the ideas coming!

I should be able to make it, and could get a room since it would help the cause. Good to see they don't demand that they supply all the eats and drinks.

Sounds like fun!!
I would be interested in a room at the Shilo for Saturday night...
I might have to drag the drift boat down and float the Siletz, or bring the sled down and crab or do a little Sturgie fishing or, or I better stop now

Re: Need more input on the next TA meeting!
Rod,
First off, I'd like to thank you for some obvious thought and effort you've put into this. You're awsome.
Sorry about the delayed response. I've been loking at my sce-doo-lee. That time frame looks good for me.
Would anyone in the Newport area be open for Ole' Ragnar crashing on their couch? I'm a gracious guest and don't smell bad  I promise I'll behave unless you don't want me to of course. Then all bets are off.
I can't offer much to repay your hospitality, but maybe an aluminum TUNA! cut-out would sweeten the deal? I hope to have some finished by that time.
Now let the responses come rolling in......
Thanks again to you Rod and all that will be there.
Ragnar

Re: Need more input on the next TA meeting!
I'd like to get in on the action if you don't mind a new guy. I made one meeting last year, but I am still a tuna virgin. I still have a lot to learn. I would need a room for Saturday night.

Re: Need more input on the next TA meeting!
Rod,
Shoni and I would be glad to get a room, for the free conference room. That would be an ideal place for the meeting. We are good for whatever weekend choosen. We will also bring whatever is needed for the potluck. The coastguard tour and class is fine as long as someone does'nt make me consume to many adult beverages on Saturday night. I will also invite Bob, the guy I told you about who spent 20 hours in the gulf of California.

Rod, thanks for putting this together. Yes, I'd be very interested in the CG speakers and tour. Pls put me down for two attending. Pot luck sounds good.
Won't need a place to stay the night, but will attend all the other activities.
Thanks again.

Re: Need more input on the next TA meeting!
Wow, that would be great Perry. Let me know what he says.
We may have a guest speaker who spent some time in the water, about 20 hours, and NOT IN A BOAT! I'll save the story for him to tell but he was in a small plane crash in Mexico and had to spend 20+ hours in the water!
I talked with Captain Kujo and I think we'll have him give his Cold Water Survival class and have the other Auxillary personnel present on something else and give us the tour of the CG station.

Re: Need more input on the next TA meeting!
The 24th works for me. Potluck sounds good. Conference room is also fine provided you find enough people to rent rooms.
Even if the rooms don't rent out, at $249.00 the conference room is a good idea. Potluck and BYOB will save everyone enough money to cover that with a conservative donation. Any proceeds left over could be donated to the CG auxillary.
Anyone interested in sharing a room? Ragnar? I'm sure they have rooms with two doubles for that price.
The CG presentation is an excellent idea as well as Captain K's survival training.
I'll be bringing the sled for crabbing and sturgeon fishing so Sunday activity for me will be taken care of.
Thanks Corrirod for running the ball on this one....your doing great.

Re: Need more input on the next TA meeting!
Rod, my wife and I plan on attending, "TA 2003, AT THE COAST." The 24th and 25th works for us. We will book one of those rooms. Will we all need to send in a deposit, call with a credit card, or will they hold them for us?
Let's see....potluck would be fine, as would a sit down dinner, wouldn't matter to us. I like the room at the hotel idea the best.
The CG tour sounds good also.
Thanks for putting it all together.

Re: Need more input on the next TA meeting!
TWB pointed out some areas to clarify, thanks Jerry.
We will only need to fill the 10 rooms for Saturday night, not both nights.
Once we get a solid count then I'll call them and we can all start reserving rooms under the Salty Dog name.

Also, how many of you were planning on bringing the kids to the TA meeting?
If there are quite a few I was thinking of having some activities for them to do. Maybe they could have a corner of the room to themselves? We could have some tables for them to draw/color, whatever they want. Maybe some fishing related games of some kind?

Re: Need more input on the next TA meeting!
FYI. Another agenda item just in!
Albacore Tuna Captain (Mike Stowe), the captain of The Blitz, will allow all of us to come aboard the Blitz where he will demonstrate some of his boating equipment and fishing tackle.
This will be on the agenda during the Coast Guard Station tour. Since we will have such a large group we will need to divide up into 2 groups for the CG tour so 1 group can do the CG tour while the other does a tour of the Blitz!
This thing just keeps getting better!
Thanks Mike!

Thanks for putting it together, Corrirod! Im looking forward to meeting everyone. We are Tuna newbies eager to learn from the masters.
Just a reminder, the 24th-25th is the last weekend of the Seattle Boat Show.

Englund's is a good idea, but they're only open until 3pm on Sat and closed on Sun... Come to think of it, are they even open on Sat during this time of year?

Gee Jen, I doubt we'd have a problem with Englunds... since Skein is on their Preferred Shopper Program... all he'd need to do is call them and tell them he was bringing over a FEW of his fellow TUNA crazed ifishers and they'd probably open up special hours just for us.

UPDATE
TWB talked with Dean Fleck, the manager of the Newport Englund Marine store, and he will be attending the dinner and TA meeting that Saturday night. He did comment that they(Englunds) were actually learning stuff from us regarding tuna but they would love to come demo any of their tackle, be it for tuna, halibut, salmon, whatever!
Thanks Dean and thanks Jerry(TWB)!

Excellent! Dean's a great guy and is always eager to learn more 'stuff'. However, last winter, I told him I wanted to learn to catch tuna. He pointed me in the direction necessary to find my way here...to the Salty Dog Forum. Now I'm working on the 12 step program...one...day...at...a....time......
On the other hand, I've got a pantry full of tuna so I have something to snack on while enduring my therapy!

Haha! Now Skein won't get in trouble. He's not going to Englund's but Janis didn't say Englund's couldn't come to him

Re: Need more input on the next TA meeting!
Rod - I'm in for the Cold Water Survival Class in Newport on the 24th. Let me know if you need any assistance setting up a Boat Licensing Class through the USCG AUX. I'm also a Master Instructor for the USCG AUX and can also bring the supplies and class equipment needed to conduct that class also.

That's great Kujo, thanks!
I'll let you know on the Boaters course. It looks like we will have enough people to make it worthwhile but I might have the other CGA's give that course since I already bothered them regarding the other course and tour.
To everyone:
I would like to think of some games or activities for the kids to do on Saturday night. Please give me some ideas. I'd like to think of some "fishing" related games or activities so keep that in mind.
Thanks.

I am planning on making the weekend event. I have a friend I can stay with down there and will try to persuade him to attend also.

Re: Need more input on the next TA meeting!
corrirod, how soon do we need to reserve a room? Is there a secret handshake we need to know to get the room at the special room rate?
Thanks,

Re: Need more input on the next TA meeting!
love2fish,
No hurry. I'm think we just made the 10 room minimum so once I get the agenda items finalized I'll make an Official post and we can all start making the reservations. Should be in the next week as long as people keep posting on the POLL thread so I can get a rough head count.
Next Monday I'll put up another reminder thread to get the rest of the Dogs to take the poll. I should have all the events in order soon after and then we'll be on the road to tunaholic-ville.
That's a song isn't it, "Wasting away again in tunaholic-ville, searching for my....bluefin tuna in salt. Some people claim.....there's a blue shark to blame, but I know...... it's my Penn reel's fault."

Re: Need more input on the next TA meeting!
I'm interested in meeting some i-fishers and learning from the tuna masters. I hope to make a few blue water trips this year in addition to the usual salmon & halibut. I'd contribute to the conference room fund if necessary. I already have a place to stay in GB.

Re: Need more input on the next TA meeting!
Well I'm pretty sure I'll be attending this one and the cold water survival sounds great to me. Anything I can learn to suck a few extra minutes back into my life out there is a wealth of knowledge just in case. I'll also take one of the rooms at the Shilo for Friday and Saturday night.
If you need us to bring any gear for a tuna fishing presentation let me know. My dad and I gave one on tuna fishing at Englunds down here last summer and still have the Power Point presentation and would offer our services to do it again if needed. Otherwise, it's gonna be a jolly time meeting everyone.

Re: Need more input on the next TA meeting!
Hey Corrirod,
since there's going to be so many new ifishers there, how about name tags so we will know who we are talking to without asking.
And I'm bringing my dynomite seafood chowder so you all can taste how REAL seafood tastes.

Re: Need more input on the next TA meeting!
Hello Rod -
Would you, could you, please re-post the date, place, time, and special events, i.e. open-house rooms, boats, etc? Bold letters?
Am trying to adjust my schedule - hope to make it.

Re: Need more input on the next TA meeting!
Hi corrirod,
I'm new to the forum, but my wife and I would very much like to come to the TA thang. I've never TUNA fished, but have room for one more addiction. We'd bring our camper and stay somewhere and go to as many "events" as we can. Is it too late to sign up? What can I do to help? Thanks,
Walt

Re: Need more input on the next TA meeting!
No problem FullDeck, come on over!
There is another thread on this board called TA meeting Poll. If you could just answer the questions on the poll that will help me keep track of the counts for the various events.
Thanks and welcome aboard!

I work all weekend, but would like to attend the dinner and meeting. I filled out the poll, but do you want names and such of attendees?
