Power Squadron Classes
New classes start in February. You can get your boaters card, learn piloting techniques (plotting courses, taking bearings, understand tides and currents and never be lost...well almost never, with a map and compass, learn seamanship, learn to interpret weather and learn engine maintenance. ifishers (especially salty dogs and wannabe salty dogs) should be filling these classes.
My wife and I just completed the advanced piloting class. It was very interesting and makes sense of much of the electronically generated data from the gps and chart plotting software.
If you are interested, you can contact Kevin Kennedy of the Portland Power Squadron at (503) 663-7406

Re: Power Squadron Classes
It really helps to have a study partner. Sometimes it takes a while to sink in! A study partner can get you over the rough parts.

Re: Power Squadron Classes
Reel Creel - Here's the scoop on the next Power Squadron Basic Boating Class - This is for the Beaverton group. Classes begin on Tuesday, Jan.13th and run for six Tuesday evenings. The classes are from 7:00PM to 9:00PM. They will be held at the Whitford School,(middle shool, I think), 7935 SW Scholls Fy. Rd. It is near Wash. Sq, adjscent to the golf course. The cost for the school and the text book and other supplies is $50.00. You do not have to pre-register - just show up.
I will be taking the class if possible. Let me know if you want to partner-up.

Re: Power Squadron Classes
State Farm issued my insurance. I faxed them my certificate of completion of the boating safety class (BTW, I got 99% on the test ) and I got the 10% discount. I think most boat insurers offer the discount.

Re: Power Squadron Classes
Yes they do, but as I understand it, if you complete 2 power squadron classes and purchase the power squadron sponsored insurance, you get 20% off.

Re: Power Squadron Classes
I don't think that there is a limit on the number of people who can attend, not too formal. Membership in the Power Squadron does as stated above have other benefits.
This might be a good topic to discuss at a T/A.

Re: Power Squadron Classes
We took the Coastal Navigation class last winter and learned a lot. Good course, very informal, and cheap for what we got out of it. We are taking another one this winter.

Re: Power Squadron Classes
I just got off the phone with Gary Orendorff-the Beaverton Squadron Education Officer who's listed on their website indicated above.
They conduct their classes at the TVFR office in Aloha and only charge for the training materials. You must join the Power Squadron to take the classes - that's $60 per year. His next courses for Seamanship and Piloting start in March.

Re: Power Squadron Classes
Rod - There were two postings because there are two different power squadrons meetings listed.
I am refering to the Beaverton Power Squadron Classes. The classes are scheduled for Tues. 13th. from 7:00 to 9:00PM at the Whitford School, ( I think it is a middle school), 7935 SW Scholls Ferry Rd. (near Wash. Square - adjacent to the golf course. The cost is $50.00 for the course and materials. The classes meet for six weeks on Tues. evenings.
