Rod Holders
Last summer there was a discussion on one of the posts about rod holders that were spotted in one of the pictures posted. I don't remember which post this was in but I am still curious about these rod holders. I remember the person was going to find out the brand and where they could be purchased. I am looking for something that is strong and withstand a beating. I have scotty rod holders which I have always used and I love them to death (they're the "le striker" model). What I am not loving is that they are made of plastic. I have read several posts which have described a loud report and then seeing your rods go into the drink (rod holder failure). I am not a rich man and really don't want to have the extra cost of replacing my rod and reel so I would like to get a stronger rod holder to--hopefully--fix this. Last year I fixed this issue by letting the on the drag. Of course you all know that it is near impossible to drive home a hook on a tuna with such a hard mouth and a light drag setting. I did use the old thumb technique to get it in there deeper but for others on my boat without much experience this can be a problem (pinched thumb or broken line from too much pressure too quickly). If any of you have information on a better, stronger rod holder I would be very grateful. I made some plans to machine my own custom r.h., but this would cost quite a bit of time and money. I am sure there are companies that can take care of this for me and I would like to just buy some instead. I have both rail mounted and flat base mounted holders now which would be switched out. Thanks

You may have been referring to my inquiry to Mellow-Yellow about the rod holders in one of the pictures he posted. Here is the link to that discussion thread:

Re: Rod Holders
Regardless of the type of rod holder, if you really want to hang on to your rods use a lanyard.
I've watched 2 guys drop rods in the drink, one while putting a rod in a holder (opps, I missed the hole and let go !) and one while trying to get it out with a fish on.
A lanyard is SOP for fishing Billfish down south where your rod and reel are worth the price of a nice used boat around here.

Re: Rod Holders
The link that Bob posted contains all the info I have...
You might run them through your search engine of choice. There's probably a number of places you can order these online.
Let me know if you want me to repost the pics and I'll see if I can find them...

Re: Rod Holders
No,, I stuck everything in the mail.
Guess who paid the Gov?
Did get some nice crabs on Saturday though.
Saw my Port tank, it's really nice, bottom edges
have a nice radius.. Glad the boat was down in the Warrenton Hole, 65knot winds are not very nice to canvas tops.
Saw Rodger R&R, had a tough time walking down on the docks, glad I'm fat and low to the ground.

Re: Rod Holders
It is pretty protected at the Yard slips there (as long as the building don't blow over) . Glad I brought Miss B home when I did instead of waiting till t-day weekend.
My top is only 10 years old. I need it to last another 10. After that I can cash out my 401k and buy a new one!
Sounds like that blow we had after I crabbed with Tuna Tom. It can get a LOT worse than that ya know. 4 years ago it hit 110 down there. Don't know what they saw in that big Nov 1995 blow.

Re: Rod Holders
I had a guy drop a brand new rod and reel in the drink last year.
Maybe the charter guys in Dopoe Bay are right, don't let the customers anywhere near the rods.

Re: Rod Holders
Has anyone made their own rod holders? I have been thinking about using aluminum pipe, cut off and welded or clamped to a bar arched across the back (near the splash well). It could be done so that it could be removed when not tuna fishing. Any thoughts on this or improvement ideas?
Dave

Re: Rod Holders
Hi Dave, good evening to ya. When I think of custom fabricating rod holders, one word comes to mind.....Popeye.
For pre-manufactured, there are some real heavy duty ones made in CA, that many of the charter guys use. One would be the bronze jobs with a "ring & fork" for lack of a better description. Lininger (Oakland) makes them. Also, there are some heavy duty stainless tube types made by a few custom machine shops. I'll see if I can find links.
Here's one of the bronze jobs, an oldie dipped in vinyl. The newer ones may only have the fork & ring coated. The clamp goes onto a tube rail. There is also a flange mount, to bolt to a flat surface. A set screw threads into the clamp.
Lininger doesn't have a website. I recall these being sold at a place called Sea Power Marine in Oakland / Alameda area. http://www.sea-power.com/
Charkbait has some of the stainless tube type holders, that they claim are higher quality than the Perko-types: web page

Re: Rod Holders
As I recall, most of the charters in the Bay Area that use that type of solid brass rod holder also have a cable and clip lanyard attached to the rail or the back ring of the holder.
